101 One-Dish Dinners: Hearty Recipes for the Dutch Oven, Skillet \u0026 Casserole Pan Reviews
-
101 One-Dish Dinners: Hearty Recipes for the Dutch Oven, Skillet & Casserole Pan is a simple, easy to follow, one dish recipe book that will delight the entire family.
The cookbook starts with a comprehensive guide to the dishes and knives as well as how to care for them and their proper use. Then it continues to set up categories from soups to more substantial meals.
One of my musts for a great recipe book is pictures which are provided. I know you can’t judge a book by its cover but if the recipe is unappealing to the eye it’s a hard sell to the family, which I don’t think will be the case with 101 One-Dish Dinners: Hearty Recipes for the Dutch Oven, Skillet & Casserole Pan.
I recommend 101 One-Dish Dinners: Hearty Recipes for the Dutch Oven, Skillet & Casserole Pan as a great way to make hearty, healthy meals that range from American favorites to some with international flare with quick and ease. Maybe it should be named One Dish Wonders!
I received this ARC copy of 101 One-Dish Dinners from Storey Publishing, LLC in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication September 20, 2016.

“One-dish” is a complete fabrication for many of these dishes.

A great cook book for anyone that is on the go and wants to start a meal and have it ready when you get back, or just to put in the oven. Some of the meals reminded me of ones my would make when our three children were still at home and life was an endless drive, drive, drive, for her and needed something quick and filling especially for a teenage boy over 6 feet and I was working. Still some of these recipes are still good today all you need to do is cut down the ingredients and they still work. I have done it. The photos are very good and book is broken into sections, soups, stews, casseroles, salads etc... A very useful cookbook I believe. I got this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 5 stars. Follow us at

A lot of the recipes are boring and look really dull. Not to mention, a pile of them include instructions to boil pasta or veg in a separate pot, meaning you're using more then one dish, which completely defeats the purpose of this book title.

I personally have 2 Crock Pots, and 3 Slow Cookers. I also own numerous cast Iron pieces and multiple casserole dishes of various sizes. Why you ask? Because I have very little time many days to spend the time I enjoy preparing a meal or experimenting. I can prepare multiple dishes in my slow cookers and crock pots and pull it all together in a few minutes when I arrive home.
If preparing a stew or soup I can throw in all in the slow cooker either the night before or in the morning befoore life intrudes and I am off at a run. Or if I plan and early start I can put together a breakfast casserole the night before and heat it up in the morning or put the slow cooker on and wake up to a hot delicious breakfast. Kids have recitals or a game that will run into the dinner hour, no problem salad in the fridge, Spaghetti is in the cooker and bread is buttered awaiting browning in the oven.
Our lives are hectic at time and we need to cut down our time slaving in the kitchen, Slow Cookers, Crock Pots casseroles and one dish meals are there to help us do that. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy a meal of beef wellington of scratch lasagna as much as the next person, but time constraints keep me from indulging in one of my favorite hobbies, cooking.
The recipes found her are well written and are easy to follow. Prep of ingredients may require additional cookery, but again if you do it the night before it is all in the fridge waiting for you to finish it off and cook it the next day.

It's mainly my own fault for not liking it. I'm a vegetarian but I like to flip through any cookbook that focuses on a topic I'm interested in. I like the idea of cooking everything in one dish. I thought I could exclude the meat or substitute with fake meat. But it turned out too difficult to do so. Very meat focused. But if you're looking for that kind of thing, and learning a little bit of history this might be the book for you. It has some great quotes and fun facts about various recipes. The author really tried to stand out. Kudos to them. I think it worked.

I really like Andrea Chesman's cookbooks. I was a bit disappointed, however, to see that this isn't a new book, but a retitled edition of a 2005 book. There are many oldies-and-goodies with a few new ideas for a one-pot-meal fan.
From the perspective of recipes-per-book-thickness (5/8 inch), this book is packed, yet it keeps to the easy-to-read format of one recipe per page. Many recipes also have photos. -
I like one dish dinners that are quick don't use a million ingredients and taste good. This book has soups, stews and main courses. Will photos that make you want to make them and easy to read instructions this is a good book to have on hand. From the Chicken Tortellini Soup to the Tuscan Tuna Salad with White Beans you will find something to spark your interest and taste buds. I recommend this cookbook for your library. It will come in handy.

Very comfort-food oriented. I liked the soup chapter, but otherwise many of the dishes were kind of time-consuming or required more active cooking than I can do on a weeknight. Nothing too imaginative, but all the recipes seem solid. A good book for potential freezer heals (the casseroles) or soups.

101 One-Dish Dinners: Hearty Recipes for the Dutch Oven, Skillet & Casserole Pan is a simple, easy to follow cookbook. However, After doing some research, I was disappointed to see that this isn't a new book, but merely a re-titled edition of a 2005 book. It is comfort food oriented though, so that's a plus, and I rather enjoyed the colorful pictures throughout as well.
-
Loved it! These are reasonable one-dish dinners that anyone could make. I've already made a few of the dishes and they were fantastic. I like the helpful tips and history of the dishes/ingredients. I recommend this one!
-
Meh.
-
was not impressed, didn't find anything that I wanted to try.
-
Well-organized by recipe type. Clear instructions and ingredient lists and frequent photos.
-
Great reference.
-
Will try some of these.

I love to cook a variety of meals and I'm always looking for new recipes to try. With a busy schedule, one-dish dinners is a plus, so I was eager to look through this book. I'm a visual person, so I was basically only drawn to the recipes with pictures - a little more than half of the recipes have beautiful color photographs. On first perusal, I found three recipes that I will be trying soon. There are several others that are similar to family favorites - not sure if there's a twist in these recipes that would enhance our exisiting favorites.

Full of recipes both familiar and new to me, I would definitely say this cookbook is accessible to a wide range of people. Whether you want to learn recipes from other cultures or you just want to make a simple meal, or whether you're skilled in the kitchen or...just want to make a simple meal, there's something in here for you.
When I was looking through the recipes, I noticed that most of the ingredients are pretty standard and easy to find at a local grocery store. To me, that's important in a cookbook because it's nice to be able to make delicious food without breaking the bank or going on a trek to find obscure ingredients.
My one criticism of the book is that 2 of the 3 recipes I tried were not one-dish dinners. The soup used a couple of pans (which I'm not complaining about, just, it's not one dish) and the casserole required several pots and pans. I wouldn't quite call them one-dish dinners, even though they were fairly straightforward to make - I was expecting something simpler based on the title of the book.
On to the food!
The first thing I made from this book was the Stovetop Mac 'n' Cheese with Ham & Peas (p.116). It was super simple and easy to make, and it's a good way of getting some greens and protein into you. I didn't have any ham at home, so it ended up being a vegetarian version of the recipe, but ham could only make it tastier. I also tossed in some leftover broccoli, which was delish. The mac 'n' cheese is a little dry, so I'd suggest using a little more milk and cheese.
The second recipe I made was Caldo Verde (p.50), which is literally "green soup" in Portuguese. Being a half-Portuguese family, everyone in my house was super excited about this one, given that we love my grandma's version. There were a couple of things I did wrong, so I endured some light ribbing (all in good fun) from my Portuguese mother and the rest of my family ("What happened?"), but overall, I'd say it's a great recipe. It ain't pretty, but it's so incredibly tasty. Everyone who tried it absolutely loves it, and I'd say it's a big success in my house!
The last thing I made was Pastitsio (p.145), which is described as a Greek mac and cheese. This was probably the most popular thing I made from the book, as I made it late last night and it's nearly 2/3 of the way gone already. It was also the most complicated - this is the recipe that used multiple pots and pans, and it was also time-consuming. I won't be making it for a while because it was a lot of work, but I do think it's worth the effort!
All in all, this is a great cookbook if you're looking for some fairly easy, very delicious recipes. -
This is a great cookbook. I mean, who doesn't want to cut down on the mess? I'm a Mom of two little ones and it's practically impossible to cook with them around. If you need more than 2 pans, forget it. This book offers some really delicious recipes that aren't just your standard casseroles. It also includes a few tips and tricks and a ton of beautiful photos. I'm very much looking forward to cooking some of these for my family.

This is an easy to follow and very useful cookbook which requires minimal pots and pans because pretty much all of each recipe is made in one post - hence the name!
I've made quite a few of these dishes now and can honestly say they're super easy to follow and tasted really good. My favourite section so far has been the oven-cook dishes as they're super easy and I love just being able to shove it in the oven and go off and do something else until it's ready! The vegetable lasagne in particular has been a real winner with everyone I've made it for - but there are plenty of non-veggie recipes too, of course! Plus a lot of recipes look like they could easily be adapted to add or remove meat, if that's what you fancy.
There are a good amount of photos to accompany recipes (something which I always finds encourages me to make that recipe, if I can see the end result - and I'm sure many other people are the same!) and they don't require lots of crazy ingredients that you're never going to have in the cupboard. Some recipes are a lot more basic than others, which is great as there's a good range you can pick from depending on A) your cooking skills and B) how lazy you're feeling. This is an essential part of cooking for me - most of the time I'm really excited to try something fancy, even if it doesn't work out, but sometimes I just want something quick, easy and requiring minimal effort.
This is a great do-it-all book, so however you're feeling, 101 One-Dish Dinners should have you covered!

5 Stars - I would recommend if you are a busy person who enjoys the simplicity of one-dish meals. This is a huge number of recipes with something for everyone!
I don't know about you guys, but one pan meals make my life easier. Less clean up, less space being taken by skillets, sauce pans, and other gadgets. They're quick, simple, hearty, and after this book... available en masse. Right off the bat this cookbook has great branding - the cover grabbed me, and opening it up the contents are immediately well organized making things very easy to find! The recipes are divided up by type of meal: Soups and Stews, Skillet and Other Stovetop Suppers, Oven Baked Suppers, and Salad Suppers. Chesman gives a bit of advice on supplies, and maintenance of said supplies, but then dives straight into the recipes. From things like Homemade Broths to Tom Yum Rice Noodle Bowls, and Arroz con Pollo to Chili Mac, and back to Lamb Couscous, this book is filled to the brim with home style American classics to many delicious ethnic options. From Pad Thai to Cajun, Spanish style Paella to Greek Moussaka, and Vietnamese Shrimp and Noodle Salads, this book covers all your bases and won't leave you bored just a few recipes in! I'm already picking out recipes to try on my own, and I hope that many will become one dish family favorites around here!
This title was given to me by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. These reviews are my own opinion, and based on the edition of the book I was given at the time. Thank you Netgalley! -
As a busy homeschool mom, easy one-dish dinners are a blessing! I like to make nice, more complex dinners as well, but sometimes you just have one of those days that you need a quick (at least a quick prep!) dish with less clean up afterwards. That's where this book comes in. 101 dishes for either the dutch oven, skillet or casserole.
There is a great variety with the book divided into four main sections: Soups and Stews, Skillet Suppers, Oven-Baked Suppers and Salad Suppers. You also have a variety of cuisines from Italian Wedding Soup to Louisiana Red Beans & Rice, Vietnamese Shrimp & Noodle (or Vegetable) Salad, Thai Beef Salad, Moussaka, Arroz con Pollo, Irish Stew and so much more!
I was tickled to see King Ranch Chicken as I have good memories or this dish at church potlucks growing up! New England Seafood Chowder...well, what's not to love?! I like that you can just follow the recipe as is, or you can get creative and add even more seafood if you'd like! I really want to try the Mediterranean Seafood Stew next!
This is not high-brow, fancy cooking, but dishes that are easy to put together and tend to be family favorites. This is a great book for those nights you just need an easy meal to feed your family. Give it a try!
I received a copy of this book from Storey Publishing for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. -
This is my kind of cookbook!!!! It could've also been named cooking for dummies 101 since that's my cooking skills in a nutshell. These recipes are so very simple that yes, maven I can follow along & make these recipes!
Cookbook starts out with a bit of background about dishes & knives & how to take care of them & how to use them etc. then the table of contents is set up very nicely by category, starting with soups then getting into heartier meals all to be made,in 1 dish---which is the best part as I'm concerned. Not a lot of dishes to clean up after making these recipes. This book is a KEEPER!! I'll probably make many items from this cookbook since the author has made it so very simple. Also, very nice photographs of the finished dish are provided. This can be helpful in case when you finish your version,if it doesn't look like the picture, perhaps you need to try again. Might not look 100% as beautiful, but as long as it resembles it, I'd say you're good to eating it!
I received a digital copy of this cookbook from net galley & Storey publishing. In return I've written an honest review AND managed to successfully make a soup recipe from this book! This will be amongst my favorite cookbooks to use -
This is a straightforward cookbook that provides a wide range of simple recipes. There are soups, rice dishes, casseroles and salads. Each recipe has a photo, description, ingredient list in order of use, and clear instructions. I found it easy to find a large number of recipes that interested me, some of which were common (black bean soup, lasagne, etc.) and others of which were less so (Mexican lasagne, Thai beef noodle salad, etc.). Each of the recipes I tried turned out well and were readily eaten by me and my husband. The readily available ingredients and familiar cooking techniques mean this could easily become a standby cookbook for regular use.
I made the Chili Mac and the Shrimp and avocado salad. The chili mac was a hit and my husband liked it better than the Italian-style version I had been making. The salad had great flavor and was both fresh and light, with a variety of textures.
I'd recommend this book for someone looking for a wide variety of straightforward recipes that make flavorful meals with little fuss. They also make great leftovers. -
I was looking forward to this as I am incredibly lazy. However, most of the recipes don’t look very appetizing, and I think in large part it is due to the way they are taken. There are food stains on the dishes, the items look plated very sloppily, and the colors look washed out rather than bright and colorful. I saved a couple of recipes and will try them, but when I look for a cookbook, I like gorgeous pictures that make me want to eat the food, and this just did not have that.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy. -
Straightforward instructions on making a variety of 'one-pot dinners.'
Boldly flavored recipes are the theme, and with 101 to chose from, there are enough recipes to satisfy every member of the family. The ease of only using one dish coupled with clear instructions makes this indispensable to family cooks. The recipes are hearty and seem to be nutritious as well. Chesman includes many American favorites, and also pulls from international cuisines. The photos are bright and colorful.
I would recommend this for busy families who prefer healthy, hearty, home-cooked meals with a minimum of fuss.

101 One-Dish Dinners: Hearty Recipes for the Dutch Oven, Skillet, and Casserole Pan by Andrea Chesman is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late September.
As I see it, Chesman's one-dish recipes are split into 4 different types: pots (soups and stews), pans (sautéed/simmered items made with a stove element), dishes (baked entrees from an oven), and salad bowls (leafy and mayo-based salads). The origins of these recipes are very diverse, but the hard-zoomed photos of the food are static and don't do the finished product much justice. -
Andrea Chesman's 101 One Dish Dinners Hearty Recipes for the Dutch Oven, Skillet & Casserole Pan is the perfect cookbook for time-stressed cooks. All of her recipes emphasize the ease and beauty of one pot cooking.
I loved her recipe intros and historic vignettes sprinkled throughout her cookbook. I also loved the color photos illustrating the recipes.
Some of the recipes you'll find in her cookbook include:
Chinese Chicken Noodle Bowl
Shrimp Pilau
Oven-Baked Pot Roast with Vegetables
Chili Mac
Stovetop Mac 'n' Cheese with Ham & Peas

This book took forever for me to get thru.. because its a PDF.. and PDFs don't like to download to certain devices .. so then I kept forgetting about it.. I decided to sit down and actually look at it since its been so long. This is a good book for those busy moms or clueless Kitchen queens. Simple filling dishes that don't impress dinner guests but keep everyone satisfied and full.
I received this from netgalley and the publisher for an honest review. -
Overall a great cookbook for cooking one pot meals. There aren't too many steps and not an overwhelming amount of ingredients either. The book is divided into four section: soups and stews, skillets and other stovetop suppers, oven-baked suppers and salad suppers. Don't let salad suppers fool you though, not all of them are lettuce/leaf based. Overall a good cookbook.
I received this advanced copy from Storey Publishing through Netgalley for my honest review.
