WHY WE LOVE IT: STEVEN UNIVERSE? is a show that captured our hearts almost immediately. We've been fans of Rebecca Sugar's from her work on ADVENTURE TIME for years and as the first lady to run her own show at Cartoon Network, we couldn't wait to collaborate with her!

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: A comic about a boy and his friends living in a small beach community, who just happens to have magical powers and fight monsters on the side?! Fans of ADVENTURE TIME and Sailor Moon are gonna dig this series presented in a zine-like format of mini-comics, recipes, games, and more!

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Steven really wants to enter the annual Beach City Bike Race but

everyone else is a little worried. Steven just makes the cut-off for age, which means the other bikers will be a lot older than him. Connie agrees to help Steven the old-fashioned way through good ol' exercise but Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl have other plans...

Lindas y tiernas historias con los personajes de Steven Universe :) Mis favoritas son en las que sale Lion, pero todas son geniales! No tiene nada que ver con la historia de la serie, pero son historias cortitas que te darán un mood super tierno y relajado :)

As a hardcore fan of Steven Universe, I'm trying to catch up on the comics in chronological order, and this is the very first one in a looong series. While I find the cover of this issue to be gorgeously beautiful, the "episodes" illustrated by Coleman Engle and Raven M. Molisee were rather messy, to the point they were difficult to read. My favorite ones (there are 4 "episodes" in this issue, plus an Uncle Grandpa special) definitely were Birthday Bake Off and Steven Chewniverse, which were also way easier to read.

    Disappointing

As much as I love the cartoon series, I never quite like the comics quite as much. They all read like filler episodes, which is fun but not as enjoyable as seeing the characters experience growth and learn from their mistakes, building as they go. But even though I miss that aspect (and the animated characters' vocal performances) while reading comics, these are still worth reading for any SU fan.

The paper issue I own has Cover B by Andrea Fernandez!

This issue contains the comics "Vacation," "Navigation Adventure," "Steven Chew-niverse," and "Birthday Bake-Off."

    "Vacation" (Full-length, color):
Plot: While on a mission to capture a corrupted Gem, Steven wants to stay and enjoy the beach and the nice weather, since it's raining back where they live. After they conquer and bubble the errant Gem, it's inexplicably resistant to being teleported back to the temple, so Pearl struggles to carry it. Amethyst tries to help her and teases Pearl, which leads to a fight, a burst bubble, and a reformed Gem. Pearl won't let go of it so she gets trapped when it reforms. Amethyst tries different shapeshifting tactics to fight it. With help from the whole team, they reclaim the Gem and finally get to have some fun.
    Notable:
    1. The action's kind of tough to follow sometimes, and it includes Amethyst apparently making fun of Pearl's pointy nose.
    2. There's never been a Gem that wouldn't go back to the temple when bubbled, so that's new!

"Navigation Adventure" (One-page short, black and white):
Plot: Lars and Sadie get lost on the way home from a wrestling match. Lars won't admit he can't find the way home and they're still wandering until the end of the comic.
Notable: The wrestling match included Tiger Millionaire. :3

    "Steven Chew-niverse" (One-page short, color):
Steven combines the power of bagels and hot dogs! He couldn't decide which to have, so he creates a recipe to include both.

"Birthday Bake-Off" (Short, black and white):
It's Steven's birthday and the Gems forgot to get Steven's cake. While Greg is entertaining Steven elsewhere, each of the Gems tries their hand at making a cake. Amethyst's is a disaster because she just threw yummy junk food in a bowl and burned it in the oven. Pearl tries to be scientific about it and bake with the proper chemical reactions, but she doesn't understand that iron and calcium should not involve bolts and chalk, and since she has no concept of what food should taste like, hers is also an unappetizing mess. Garnet's turn yields a perfect, beautiful cake with no explanation. When Steven cuts into it, it turns out to be entirely formed of frosting. Which is perfect because he loves frosting.
    Notable:
    1. Steven's wearing the same "birthday suit" he wore in "So Many Birthdays."
    2. The Gems' attempts to make a cake are adorably appropriate for each of their personalities.

I don't enjoy the comics as much as I enjoy the television show, but it's fun to "visit" your favorite characters in print form! This issue had some weird Gem-capturing hijinks and a story about the Gems' difficulties baking a cake for Steven's birthday, with a couple cute shorts as well.

It's all like a filler episode. Sadly I don't like fillers that much. I don't know what I expected because it can't have a plot because there's still the main cartoon. For what it is, it's quite good and it has art from different artists, which was interesting to see.

3 historias cortas diferentes que sin duda alguna, te hacen sentir en el universo de Steven Universe. Todas muy graciosas y entretenidas.
