Hannah wants nothing more than to pay off her bond and live free, but her patron has other ideas and centuries to keep her. Body and soul.

After a planet-killing asteroid, humanity has to huddle under shelters and live in the dimmest of places. A year of brutal survival and the breakdown of society leave Hannah less than hopeful of her prospects in the new world.

A message in the darkness offers a lifeline to those who wish to leave Earth to be bonded servants to alien masters. For most, the price of their bond will be labour, but for Hannah, it turns into something else.

With a stunningly high sensuality rating, she is a prime sexual bondservant and the bidding for her services ends with an amount that breaks records.

Her patron is a male with wings who belongs to a species that does more than need sex; they consume it.

Mero only needs to look at her, and he is hungrier than he has ever been.

Not gonna lie, these novellas are really expensive but like, I read the whole series and was sad there wasn't more? Soooooooo.

There is a tension in the writing here from the heroine's practical, cautious, and attentive point of view that is just lovely.

The hero is mysterious but this aspect of his character makes sense as he is a very powerful being.

The erotic elements weave themselves into great world building. The romance and secondary characters are well drawn.

The HEA needs a slower hand but it is a cheerful closing and I look forward to the next book in this series.

    4.25 stars!

Hannah is bought by Mero as a slave. Mero is sort of a succubus-like alien and he feeds on Hannah regularly. Soon, both of them start to develop feelings for each other.

This novella features a cute couple and lots of smut. It was an easy read and a distraction while I battled my book slump. The dialogue was a little too stiff even when two humans were talking to each other but I ignored it, mostly.

What I couldn’t ignore was the ending that left me disappointed. The author contradicts herself by having her heroine go on a rant about the importance of being free and then ending up as a slave anyway during the epilogue.

I’ll give the next book in the series a chance anyways.

This was like reading a teenage girls idea of romance. No character development, outside of sex there wasn’t really a plot. Glad my money was refunded

This is a different type of story for Grace. The heroine is from an apocalyptic earth and has suffered from the turmoil of the world dying as well as from being victimized by other survivors. She leaps at the chance to join an extraterrestrial program, despite knowing nothing about it including if its really real. Well it is, and she finds that she must pay back the cost of her rescue and training through service that is sold to the highest bidder. And the higher the bidding the longer it will take to buy her freedom.

Hannah is practical--trading freedom for security and food. The placement she ends up in is one that she did not anticipate, and doesn't really welcome, but she is determined to do well to ensure her safety and ultimate freedom. It takes a while for her to comprehend her true situation, but once she does, she is able to take ownership of it and turn it into an opportunity to reach many of her goals.

Along the way there is sex. Lots and lots of it. And that is both a trade-off and a benefit of her situation. Related to this are some scenes with limited or questionable consent. Power dynamics are important here, and she learns that despite being a bonded servant she has power of her own to wield. As she comes to that realization, there are some humorous scenes, main in terms of others' reactions to her desirable characteristics.

The book does not down play the nature of the situation she is in, but does address differences in cultural perception and power roles. Hannah doesn't back down or hide. And she's smart about how she confronts difficult interactions. I'm hoping for more in this universe, despite its uncomfortable dynamics.

Este libro lo sentí tan impersonal, los personajes no están bien desarrollados y la trama prometía, pero todo fue tan soso y sin sabor que cada capítulo me dejaba igual.

Mero is a winged alien hybrid who buys Hannah at an auction because she gets sexually aroused very easily. They have a lot of sex and Hannah never once protests or hesitates to do what she’s told, but not in a sexually submissive way. It’s more of a practical you’re-my-boss way.

In fact, other than the sex, there was very little romancing. I find it hard to believe that they fell in love, and even if they did, I would not be surprised if Mero loved her the same as he loved the rest of his companions (who Hannah notices all look vaguely alike, her included). Theirs is more of a friendship than a romance to me, to be honest.

Superb, sexy, start to a series

I first read Shattered Stars a few years back. I absolutely loved it, but it was a standalone then. Now that there are 2 more books, I felt compelled to buy the series. This story rocks - from the fine world-building, to the cinematic descriptions, to the stunning sensuality, this original and imaginative take on the alien bride trope lures you in and won't let go till the slight twist on the HEA ending. Absolutely fascinating! Totally worth reading and re-reading

This is alien erotica with a purpose for that erotica.
The heroine leaves Earth for various reasons but basically anything else would be better. She eventually ends up bought by an alien that uses sex as food. Or does he want a relationship too?

I wasn't satisfied with the ending. But it does end on a positive note. Viola Grace always has an interesting story.

    Mature content

I have been rummaging to find this book and when I finally did, I was excited to have an all night read.

    And I DID.

But let me tell you, all this came to an anti climatic end.
The characters started off fine , a post apocalyptic period and scavenging for survival.
Aliens coming in, enrolling in a program for survival and finding a sexy to die for outwardly creature.

All this was great but I felt the book was a bit of a drab.
It felt sorta emotionless and disengaging.

The book was a quick read and ended on an unsatisfied read :(

    PS for Author :
    Sorry Viola !
I absolutely love your books but this didn’t make me happy

    Loved Shattered Stars!
Earth has nearly been destroyed and the survivors are struggling. Aliens show up and offer humans the change to leave earth as bondservants, serving as labors, domestic or pleasure servants, to various races in the galaxy.
Hannah immediately signs up and trains as a domestic but her sensuality level is so high she sent to auction as a pleasure servant. Hannah's bond is purchased by Mero a Hmrain, who has the face of an angle, the body of a greek god and the wings of a demon. The Price he paid for her, she will never live long enough to earn her freedom.
The Hmrain feed on pleasure and pain. Mero has never met anyone like Hannah.
Loved Mero and Hanna's story. A fun and steamy sifi erotic romance.

I can’t remember where it was, but I saw this recommended somewhere. I put a price watch on it and bought when it was “on sale” for $4.95. It’s a novella, so I feel like it’s overpriced for what it is. It was decent, but it really jumps right in with not much description. I found myself constantly wishing for more description about all the alien stuff. It was a bit head scratching about Hannah’s behavior, too. She made sure to tell any other bond servant who questioned her position that she’s an “intimate bond servant”, so doing this against her will just like they are, but then turns around and acts like she loves it and him. It’s decent, but I won’t purposely pick up any of the other books by this author.

This is a re-readable series and for all its grammatical faults, short length, and sometimes rough sentences, it is addictive. For some reason. I honestly believe the author should improve how she writes, lengthen the word length of her books, and hire an editor because this series deserves more attention than it should--or maybe that's just me too biased because I am obsessed with the Hmrain...hmmmm...

On a last note, I love the worldbuilding btw, I tried her other scifi stories but naaaah, Hmrain all the way.

Loved the story line, but it felt rushed towards the end. I felt that with this author's talent and imagination this book could have been more in depth and a bit longer. I am looking forward to reading the next installment in this series.

I can see why Ms. Grace is the top selling author at Extasy Books. She excels at her craft, spinning a story that not only draws you in, but makes you read it in one sitting.

    Different but very good

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope to read many more by this author. I recommend this book and loved the storyline!

  • Daenerys Targaryen

    Don't have much substance.

  • Melanie

I loved it. I just need more story though!

  • Libby

The idea wasn’t great, and neither was the execution.

Read this--and the next couple in the series--because I saw Ruby Dixon read them. Quick, dirty, low-stakes reading. Perfect for my short-attention span.
