Silver Diamond 03 Reviews

I think this series is finally hitting its stride and coming together in a way where the plot and character behaviors seem like the author thought them out and they make sense. Interesting reveals regarding the Sanomes and the family that produces them. Look forward to seeing what happens everyone goes to the other world.

But seriously guys, stop taking advice from the talking snake.

Honestly, her writing is so good. I think her panel layout is a little too busy sometimes, but she really has a way with words. She knows how to write sentences with just the right rhythm.

As for Rakan and Chigusa, oh god. So much love. And I just adore the way she writes both their feelings. I love this manga.

I didn't like Silver Diamond(: Switch All On) volume 3 quite as much as volumes 1 and 2--maybe because there's much more plot talk going on than the interpersonal character moments--but it's still enjoyable and continues to perk my interest for the rest of the series. One of the things I like is that misunderstandings and miscommunications aren't allowed to fester and grow as long as some series would let them. (I'm looking at you, Hana-Kimi.) Rakan will not put up with that kind of asshattery. You will sit down to a good meal and return his polite sociability and when he asks you to clarify your story you will do so. Even their assassin can't help being taken in. And the person who has the most communication troubles is just inexperienced but trying hard.

The characterizations are still fun, as everyone is idiosyncratic, and I enjoy the moments of humor that continue to pop up, such as the three-person spit take where the third person is the snake, the continuing evidence that Rakan's grandfather was a bit sketchy, Tohno protesting... everything, Rakan laying down slipper justice....

man i am so unironically into this story

yes to the magical plant people! yes to being from another world! all hail portal fantasy!

and one thousand percent yes to rakan, i am really really fond of this kid

like would i go off with some people i've only known for about a week to another world? no i would not, i would set very strict boundaries, write the whole story out, and inform my friends and family to tell the police what's happened if they don't hear from me at least once a day

this is why i could never be a fantasy heroine

i can get why rakan goes though! lonely good-hearted kid presented with the opportunity to learn about who he is and his past plus being faced with clear injustice and the opportunity to fix it? you go rakan, four for you rakan. i admire your commitment to the revolutionary cause!

i'm looking forward to seeing how this goes now that the plot's officially moved into magiclandia

    3.5 stars

p.s. man i miss the days of editors chatting and writing fanart commentary after the story, it was cute. and a nice way to make fans feel engaged and appreciated! alas, old tokyopop editorial policy, we barely knew thee

"The man who's missing so many things. This... pitiful person."

    aaaAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    them.

I have a feeling they won't kiss but when you hold him that close, I mean. You don't NEED to. We know what that is. We know.

I got this by accident from closeoutbooks.com for a dollar. I thought I had #1. This didn’t really inspire me to go get #1. It wasn’t horrible but it’s nothing I’d chase down either. Rakan is a young boy, leading a normal life until Chigusa lands in this universe and tries to kill him thinking the boy is the killer prince from his world. More of Chigusa’s companions come as does an assassin, Tohji who gets captured by them. It opens with all of them sitting around having breakfast and giving us chapters worth of exposition.

Basically Rakan can make plants grow. The prince he looks like, on the other hand, kills them and is turning their world into a desert. Rakan’s mother must have come from that world. Chigusa wants to take Rakan back but the young man doesn’t want to go. That is until the evil prince shows up and Rakan changes his mind.

The art is very 1980’s-1990s in style (though I’m not sure this is that old). The storyline is okay but nothing stand out. Tokyopop has it as fantasy but it’s probably more like shonen-ai.

  • Joy

Still charming: the interactions between Rakan and his guests continues to be very amusing, especially a certain character's total failure to comprehend basic social discourse, and the talking snake is still comedy gold.

  • Karla

This is definitely getting more interesting now in the third volume. The characters are starting to flesh out and the plot thickens... :)

  • Mely

Continues to be charming beyond belief, and some plot even happens in the last chapter

  • Ivory

    RAKAN!!!!!!!!!

  • Sika Little Panda

I really love when Chigusa tries to act friendly with Rakan but in the end it leads to an awkward scene (but that the same time really cute because I want them to get closer)
