Until I joined the Marching 300 at Sauvage State University, I was just too-tall, tuba-playing Lena Leblanc. But college changes everything. Suddenly I have friends, and they won't let me dodge the attraction I have for hulking, Viking-like football player Anders De Groot. He makes me feel; makes me believe that I'm more than a burden to others. That I'm more than just Lena. And for a girl whose mother checked out years ago, that's the scariest feeling of all.

Before I met Lena, all I had was school and football; study and stadiums full of spectators cheering for "Root!" Now, I can't get her out of my head. She's everything I could possibly want in a woman and I need to prove to her how good we'll be together. I need to show her that, no matter what, she's perfection. My perfection. And I'll stand my ground to make sure nothing ever hurts her. Not even her family.

See what I mean? How can he even be real? So impossibly sweet and hot? But with my stepfather threatening us, I'll have to learn how to step up and fight for what I want. Otherwise I'll lose the greatest thing to ever happen to me.

Root (Band Nerd, #2) Reviews

    Im calling dibs here ladies!
Because i just found my new book boyfriend..

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Im not going to write some long review, i admit that im too lazy for that lately, but seriously.. read this. This book should definitely receive more attention <3

«●» This story is about Lena and Arden. Arden is a football player and doesnt pay attention to anything beside studies and football. Well, until he meets Lena in one of the classes. He is totally smitten by her the second he sees her and she is the same. Except they are both little shy and dont know how to act around each other so its really funny to read about their growing romance and how are they slowly getting into relationship.

«●» It takes me usually more than few chapters for liking the Hero, but well.. impossible happened.
Because Arden, my Viking like, blushing, cute, and of course packing *smirk* hero was absolute perfection even at the beginning. But dont take me wrong, he definitely is not beta even though it sounds like that, he is pretty possesive which is even better. He is just... *sigh*

I just couldnt stop laughting when he couldnt talk, just because the heroine was looking at him and he was nervous... i mean, how cute is that?!

Heroine is actually pretty decent too, i usually like more the badass ones who doesnt take shit but i liked Lena, she was the quiet type and i thought that she was just the perfect fit for Arden. She is shy, loving, and i admired her when she didnt let the hero push her away when some bad things happened and he said some cruel words to her.

I also appreciate that it took them longer to get naked...okay, one month doesnt sound that long but im really used to reading that heroine is in bed with Hero the second day they met, so i was glad it didnt happened in this one. And their first time is hilarious, i love that we have both POVs so you can see how it is perfect for the Hero and he is completely amazed and meanwhile heroine is like...

I loved how realistic it was, and for my dirty GR friends (i know you ;D) - dont worry.. they practise...

    ...a lot.

«●» Writing is one of the most important things when im reading a book, and i often think about books that they are rushed and doesnt make any sense because of it. Not in this case. Its all in good pace and believable, yes of course their relationship happened fast but not in the insta "we are dating right next day i saw you" type.
I dont want to write anything about the storyline but its typical college romance and i have to say that i read some similar plots before, but never with characters like this. Yes, i admit that i was rolling my eyes few times but overall i really dont have bigger complaints.

«●» The secondary characters are soo good! I loved every of them, really, this author writes it that way that you know they will be getting a story and i cant wait. And i will probably read it even though one of them doesnt sound safe - and i think that says a lot... because you know me..

Im not saying its perfect, its not, but if you are looking for some funny college romance book dont look anymore <3

This was so good. I enjoyed every moment of this story. It was fun, sweet, and hot and had such an awesome bunch of characters. Anders the hero was perfect. So sweet, loyal and protective. Lena I liked instantly. She is the quite shy type of heroine which is my favorite sort. Highly recommend if you are looking for a fantastic college romance. I can't wait to read more of this series.

Awesome read! Very very sweet hero, Anders will be going on my list of book boyfriends for sure! This book (although had insta love and 2 shy virgins) kept me wanting more, I was never bored and a lot of times (even though I am a big fan of crazy insta love lol) can be boring if the book is not a short read. I loved both the hero and h, I could really feel the love they had for each other and it was very sweet. Even though we have two inexperienced virgins it's still very steamy! Also 100% safe! Read it, Enjoy it :)

Firs I just need to talk about the eyes of the cover model. Are those real? They are crazy amazing. Anyways onto the book.

Both Anders and Lena have had pretty tough lives leading up to college. They both kind of live on the fringes, never really getting close to anyone. When Anders meets Lena for the first time, he's mesmerized and tongue tied.

It was really cute reading about these two falling in love and learning to trust each other completely. It was also nice reading a college romance that didn't have huge misunderstandings between the MCs. Everything that happens to them makes them stronger as a couple that works together. It was quite refreshing. Don't get me wrong there's times that Anders tries to protect Lena from things but she calls him out on it.

Another thing I really appreciated was the fact that they didn't go from virgins to porn stars their first time. Oh no, there were some bumps along the way there but it was cute and funny. Anders is determined to make that perfect for his girl too and well practice makes perfect, right?

With an awesome cast of secondary characters that I can't wait to read about, this series has become an auto-buy for me. I'll definitely be looking into this author's other work as well. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

    4 stars!

I'm lazy and don't want to write a review. I'm a mom of 4, graduate student, and a doting wife. This makes me exhausted and lazy. That gives me a pass, right? I don't have to write a review because of all of this? Okay, good. Thanks.

Honestly, I LOVED the first half of the book and liked the second.

The hero is amazing. I would like a boyfriend one of him, please. Seriously. Perfect hero.

I really liked the heroine... yay!

Uhhh... they kind of became sex fiends once they have it.

I don't know. Good book. May read more from this author. Give another hero like this one, and I would devour each one.

    Great hero and heroine. ..

Although this story actually started out really slow for me, I'm so very glad that I stuck it out. I ended up really enjoying it.

Close to perfect hero who was not a manwhore. A resilient heroine who was likable.

    -no cheating
    -no ow/om drama
-the first part dragged until they finally got over the awkwardness
-once it got going, the steam level rose
-disappointing epilogue that was only 2 months out - nowhere near enough and left me wanting more

While the pace was slow at first, it did pick up and I really enjoyed the story. Had there been a decent epilogue, this would have been a 5 star read for ME.

*unfortunately, I won't be reading book 3. The hero was a manwhore in book 1- I don't want to watch my future heroes skanking around. Also, the blurb and reviews indicate that he is not anything like the first two heroes, which is disappointing.

Be Brave and Embrace the Band Nerd

Nearly always I am disappointed in a sports romance that features college kids. I've sampled a lot of the big names in this genre and left it at that. The only reason I can fathom that Danica Avet is not enjoying the same popularity as other authors in the New Adult genre is that maybe it is because there isn't enough bare chest showing on the cover, or maybe because this series is not on Kindle Unlimited (UPDATE March 10, 2017: NOW available on KU!!!), or maybe she doesn't have a Street Team, but probably it is because she has the chutzpah to put the words "Band Nerd" in the series title. And its true, a lot of her characters are band nerds, proud and tall.

In this book, Avet takes tall to a rare level in romance. Her heroine, Lena, is 6'1", gawky, geeky and plays the tuba in the college band, where she isn't even one of the "cool" band nerds. In class one day, and then through a couple of chance meetings, she and 6'8" football offensive lineman Anders DeGroot (Rrroooottt at the games), discover they have a little something going on between them. Avet writes about the best "there is someone out there for everyone" trope I've ever read, giving it heat and spice and everything nice along the way. These two fall in love - first love - and it is delicious. Lena and Root, as a freshman and sophomore, respectively, are both inexperienced and how these two get acquainted is touching, steamy, and at times, hilarious. He isn't an orgasm-giving God overnight, and she doesn't turn into a sexual siren with the first tumble into bed. The missteps are as delicious to read as when they get it right. And when they do get it right, have a fan handy. There were a lot of really good, really funny quotes that I wanted to include, but some were too dirty and others needed the context for them to come off well. Suffice it to say, I was laughing out loud.

But then I was practically crying.

This is only the second book I've read by Avet, but already I know that a hallmark of her style is for her romantic couple to find their pillar of strength in one another. It is almost an "us against the world" type of dynamic, especially since most immediate family members are either selfish, oblivious, or actively devious. In this case, Lena's stepdad is the most evil scumbag ever. And her mom isn't anything to write home about, either. But Lena has over-protective, smart, determined Anders on her side. He is her own personal Viking berserker with some very mean, very intimidating friends.

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end, and will definitely read more of the Band Nerd series. Avet has set up interesting dynamics among the friends who should make great reading in the sequels.

This was sooooooooooo great!! A book that kept me smiling and interested all the way through. I also liked the plot twist- I usually know what's gonna happen but this one took me by surprise so good on the author for giving me something different!

Side note: I wanna read more from this author but the rest of the assumed heros appear to be man whores.... so I'll wait and see and have mg fingers crossed.

    Safety :
Very safe: hero gets hit on by a random women at a party and the heroine sees but it gets resolved quickly. Both are virgins first and only lovers. Hero was so freaking adorable I wanted to reach into my iPad and grab him out of the book. Some pushing away by the hero at the plot twist but heroine is like "no way Jose" and also gets resolved quickly

This was a 2.5* read, rounded up because the pacing was good and I'm still interested in reading the rest of the series.

good: virgin female AND male lead.

bad: overuse of the words inner channel, wet panties and pussy.

good: interesting side stories that made me want to read other books in the series.

bad: Oooooooh sooo much seedy drama.

good: I've run out of good.

bad: What happened to the university studies and campus life? These guys are trying to get a higher education but this part of their lives faded off very quickly.

bad: dull ending. There was very little keeping these character's apart throughout the book and it wasn't exactly satisfying at the end.

    The Romance Review

**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for honest review.**

Wow, what a fantastic read! I want my own sweet Viking football player!

This book really impressed me. It was hilarious and I may have laughed so loudly that everyone in my house thought I was insane. I also shouted a bit when a certain scene caught me off guard. The romance was absolutely adorable and the characters were practically perfect to me. I just fell right in love with this book.

Lena's life could use a bit of excitement and positivity, for once. Her mother is a drug addict and her relationship with her step-father is volatile. Now that she is in college, she is determined to allow herself to live a little. Fortunately, she comes across a trio of girls who, though opposite from her in every way, are a breath of fresh air in her life.

Anders may be a football player but he knows his future doesn't lie in the sport. He works his tail off to stay on top of his classes and allows little distraction. Partying is the last thing on his mind. But after meeting the lovely Lena, Anders finds his attention has shifted onto the woman who is perfect for him. And when another guy with a rotten reputation sets his sights on Lena, Anders' protective and possessive instincts kick into high gear.

Lena and Anders are both new to this relationship business. Communication and intimacy take a while to establish but the couple is determined to make it work. That is, until the world comes crashing down around them when Lena's step-father does the unthinkable, putting the couple's futures in serious danger at every turn. Finding help in strange places may be their only way out.

I have zero complaints about this book. I laughed, I shouted, I blushed, I smiled. I loved it! Lena and Anders' relationship was one that I don't see much in romance novels. Two people who like each other from the very beginning and don't allow anything, no matter how tragic, to come between them. Lena's character really surprised me when she refused to let Anders go. My respect for her doubled when she was willing to fight for her man. It was heartwarming and realistic.

The pacing was just right to make this budding relationship believable. The love scenes were hot and plentiful. The secondary characters added humor and range to the story. I foresee several interesting books ahead with the couples that were hinted at in this book. I'm especially anxious to see if Ivan is really as "terrible" as we think...

    In closing...
I haven't read the first book of the series but I certainly will, along with any books to follow. Though, I'm not sure if anything could beat this story! Five flaming suns!

This is my first book by this author and I am not disappointed! This was your typical story of the shy girl falling for the big muscular popular athlete in college but it still had its originality that made it stand out. What I really loved about this story was how realistic some parts of the plot were but the realisticness (is there even such a word lol) didn't take away the sweetness either. The most unrealistic thing in this story was probably Root because I'm pretty sure no man is that perfect but I didn't mind that one bit.

I've got to say though, the first 50% was more enjoyable to me than the last 50% but overall it was still enjoyable. I know Ivan the Terrible is getting his own book but I don't think I would want to read it though. I just don't like how he treats people, especially girls.

Oh and can I say that I really loved that the last few chapters of this book was dedicated to the characters dealing with the big conflict in the book. In a lot of other books, right after the big conflict is over, the book might just end or maybe just have one epilogue. We don't really get to see how the hero and heroines deal with what just happened especially when the conflict is something traumatic.

I have no intention of reading the next book about Crash because I heard it isn't really safe and since this author's other books seem pretty erotic and that's not really my thing I'm not sure if I'm going to read anymore but we'll see!

Loved it! I enjoyed this book more than the first one mostly because of the awesome secondary characters...they really spiced it up for me. At the beginning I wasn't really enjoying it because I felt like Lena was pretty hard on herself in her head but am happy that it changed for the better later on. Sweet Root...I love a walking contradiction...is a jock but doesn't act like a jock, loves like crazy like Steady from book one. Loved Ivan and Rien the badasses and I can't wait for their books and don't get me started on how much I loved the girls esp Becca! Can hardly wait to read more of this series.

DNF. Couldn’t get past the 8th chapter. I got so bored. Tried over 2 nights to get into the story but something about it just felt sluggish and slow paced. I think my favorite part that actually made me chuckle was when Anders said “moo” at the restaurant. Other than that...snooze fest.

*sidenote: Not fond of the cover. His skin looks too airbrushed and his eyes are glowing so blue he looks like he could be from outer space. At first glance I thought it was a sci-fi read.

  • Courtney

Really good! At first it was like sickeningly sweet which was nice/ok. That plot twist though is what made the second half of the book riveting. It also introduced a lot of the other characters in a way that have them more depth. BUT the plot twist was definitely not what I was expecting especially bc it was nothing like the drama of the first book. Pleasantly surprised about it overall!

  • Rodgine

The color of that guy’s eyes from the cover made me think at first that this is a paranormal romance or some shit like that. Lol.

Funny and sweet. Loved it. Still thinking if I’d read the other two books.

  • Alarna

It was alright. I skimmed the last 30% of the book because it just felt like it dragged on so I deffently think it should be shorter. :|

Danica Avet was a new to me author when Steady came out. I will be honest, I bought the book just because I am a true band nerd! I loved Steady and could not wait for her next book to come out. I read through her back list and loved those as well. So when I heard Root was on it's way I just HAD to read it. Anders, a football player at Sauvage State, is a Viking of a man, but at his core is very sweet. Lena, our band nerd, is part of the Marching 3oo. Not only is Anders a talented football player, but he is on academic scholarship. Though, when he is around Lena all coherent & intelligent thought leaves his mind. It makes it an even sweeter experience for the reader. From the beginning I felt the chemistry between Anders and Lena. They both nurture each other and realize that giving their first times to each other is very special. What I think Avet does well, is portray a realistic relationship between two people who are intimate for the first time. You won't always get it perfect. The fun is in the practice. Anders and Lena have each other, but a great group of friends too. When the drama unfolds with Lena's stepfather hold on tight. She will need them all to help her through. As I was reading, I became very invested in them and can't wait to read their stories. If my vote counts, I NEED to have Rien and Becca first!
I received an ARC for my honest review.

This was actually great. Writing was excellent, characters were developed, good secondary characters as well. I love Anders =)
Why is it when a girl who blushes the ENTIRE book I find it annoying, BUT when a guy blushes I think he is adorable and want to jump him?
Their relationship proceeded at a normalized pace, even though it was insta obsession-ish for him. I liked his back story-mom was a club whore with drug problems so his older brother raised him mostly. He was also extremely smart, unless Lena was looking at him. With his chaotic childhood he needed control and stability so he didn't party too much. He just wanted to focus on football and school so he could keep his scholarship and make something of his life. He is a virgin, which I love.
Lena was really shy and insecure. Her father died and her mom brought home a man who made her feel like nothing. She was also over 6 feet tall so she felt like a freak, good thing she found a 6'8 Nordic god ;) She does come out of her shell a bit at a time with the help of her friends and Anders.
I really don't like Terrible, and I don't think I could handle his book, even with Red. Maybe Beau or Anders brother's book though, if they are written.
With two virgins I appreciated this book a lot. Often times we see virgins have sex and then magically become sex gods and orgasm immediately and repeatedly. That didn't happen here, it took a while for them to both be completely satisfied, learn each other and themselves. I like the more realistic approach, and it was still HOT!
I wasn't actually expecting any suspense in this but romantic suspense is my favorite genre so I am very happy with it. Her step father tapes them having sex and tries to rig a football game. Attempted kidnapping and a shooting happen. I was hoping she would save Anders and his brother would feel awful for being a suspicious ass but her mom may or may not have saved her.
The author put a note about her father and his records being important in her life. She also wrote that into Lena's story and I thought it was BEAUTIFUL! The end had me crying my eyes out. Anders gets her a new record player after her stepdad sold her fathers. She pulls songs at random and it is like her father is speaking to her =) very sweet and emotional ending

  • Maura

Lena is a tuba-player in the marching band who catches the attention of oversize football player, Anders DeGroot, or Root. Unfortunately, he's all tongue-tied and awkward around her and doesn't make a very good impression. But he takes the time to try and impress her and make his feelings known and eventually the two start dating. But Lena's step-father is a piece of shit and uses their relationship for his own gain, putting Root's football career, Lena's life and their relationship in danger. Enter in Root's older brother and a whole cast of shady characters and they'll fight to stay together.

I looked forward to this book quite a bit because, ohmigod virgin hero! I don't know why I love those so much. This lived up to its potential in that regard (though Root's reason for being a virgin still was a bit cliche/ridiculous . Root and Lena were both virgins and while they still had some good, sexy times together, Root was not an expert at sex his first time out the gate. In fact, he had a bit of a trigger problem, much to Lena's disappointment, but they worked on it together, a lot. That may be a bit of a downer for some readers, but not for me. Their sexy times were still hot. The build up in their relationship was awesome and I loved the first 60% of this story and was even okay with the step-father conflict. But how they dealt with the issue was not my cup of tea. This went from a new age romance (without all the negatives of the sub-genre) to an Motorcycle Club romance, which I'm not really a fan of, in a heartbeat. Suddenly we're dealing with bookies, owing of "favors," and what not. I half expect the next book to have Root's brother starting his own motorcycle club at LaSalle. I didn't care for that turn of events, although I do find myself crazy curious about Nessie and Terrible.

  • Kim

First half was okay. I liked watching the hero and heroine trying to get to know each other. I didn't care for the last half. Too much crazy nonsensical stuff happened. The heroine comes across as very naive to have lived with her step-father for so long and not expect that he would do bad things and try to manipulate the hero. Also, there were way too many "my man" and "my girl" references by the hero and heroine.

I read the first in this series a while ago and remember enjoying it. I enjoyed it enough that I put a watch on this second in the series so that I could pick it up when it went on sale. I don't know what happened between the first and second - they don't seem at all like they go together. It's possible I'm not remember the first book correctly. :(
