Wofür Alan Lee illustratorisch im"Herr der Ringe" steht, dafür steht Chris Foss im Bereich der SciFi.

Why rate it five stars? Back in the 90's I met Chris Foss in the book shop I was working at, after chatting about his art work and how much I loved it, (Now, he was not doing a signing, he had just popped in). He opened his portfolio case pulled out an awesome print sketched a little four wheeled vehicle on the bottom, signed it and said thanks! Still amazed to this day. All in all a really nice guy.

I first obtained a copy of this book from a used bookstore as a wee-bitty 5 year old lad back in circa 1981. Both then and now, I was blown away by the incredible artistic talents of Mr. Foss, military history and sci-fi paintings alike. Both then and now, my favourite paintings in the book are "HMS Warspite" (indeed, that's how I first learned of this famous royal Navy battleship in the first place) and "Dogfight (which depicts an RAF Hawker Hurricane shooting sown a Luftwaffe Junkers Ju-88 bomber). Both then and now, the untitled painting of UFOs invading an airfield with A-4 Skyhawks sitting helplessly on the tarmac freaked me out.

A 1978 selection of Foss artwork, concentrating mainly on his futuristic work, although a small section of his WW2 themed artwork is included as well. The early and since much imitated use of sophisticated airbrush techniques is notable. The SF/Fantasy work is broken down into chapters covering different themes, in order to separate concept art created for various movies. For me, the best work is pure SF art used on a variety of Panther paperback covers in the 1970s, as I remember reading most of them - the covers were most inspirational and evocative, even though they usually had no connection with the contents. The book includes some brief biographical text by Alejandro Jodorowsky, but this is not only too brief, but also includes some over optimistic forecasts about Foss's future influence on movies - this is typical of the late 1970s, when we all thought that SF movies were going to improve in quality. Very enjoyable.

Chris Foss is one of my favorite sci-fi illustrators of all time. His artwork enthralled me as a teen, and I have seen his influence in a lot of artists since then.
