Ashita no Joe (Ashita no Joe #13) Reviews

The cover says it all, really. The core of this volume is an epic fight between Joe Yabuki - "The Killer" and Carlos Rivera - "The Venezuelan Terror" on the national stadium! The former has mastered a splendid strategy to deliver a blow, the latter has seen through it and prepared a devious counterattack. The battle on the ring will be ferocious and deliver more than one surprise for both parties involved.
The series has mastered a clever way of showing the outcome of the boxers' strikes. Their movements are so fast that the eye of the spectators (ours included) cannot really register. First we see the outcome, and only after the ring announces the round's end, there is a time to watch the actual trajectory of the blow, registered by the cameras. It's much more suspenseful than simply slowing down the narration in the middle of the action.
It's worth underlining, that this issue was published in 1971, and yet it was years ahead of most Western comics in terms of realistic depiction of action. That the series doesn't have the official English-language release is simple unbelievable. Thank God for the splendid job of online scanlators, in this case the mighty HOX (check out also his amazing work on SANGOKUSHI series!).
As the match outlasted the size of the volume, it ends with a cliffhanger. But also with a powerful punch delivered by... Well, better read it for yourselves!

Any criticisms at this point are offset by the intensity and cleverness of the fight scenes. If Carlos doesn't quite have the connection with Joe that Rikiishi had, he's certainly made for an intense opponent, nevertheless and their - presumably - final duel is pretty epic in stature. The volume ends mid fight though so I don't yet know how it ends, dammit!

    Voilà, fini.

Pretty decent manga, the story wasn’t to great and a little dull but the boxing matches were really great and awesome especially the final one😻👌🥊🥊
