Strange, wonderful sights await Girl and Dragon as the inseparable friends journey far across the sea in a third warmhearted and beautifully illustrated tale.

Dragon and Girl are the very best of friends, and they share the very same dream: to sail to the farthest far-away. So they set out to sea, Girl sailing on Dragon's back. For a year and a day the two friends search up, down, and around for the faraway place, meeting creatures along the way: dolphins, whales, and even some snarly, sword-wielding pirates. And when Girl and Dragon finally reach the farthest far-away, they still share a heart and the very same dream -- home. Randy Cecil's muted, dreamy artwork and Barbara Joosse's softly poetic words cast a comforting spell over imaginative explorers, leaving them safe with the knowledge that however far you go, there is nothing quite like coming home again with someone you love.

Sail Away Dragon Reviews

  • Mir

I quite liked both the unique illustrations and the supernatural friendship.
I didn't find the story super memorable, but that may just be that I read it while sleepy.

  • Ruthie Jones

I love those impromptu journeys with a special friend. Girl and Dragon have such adventures together!

Joosse, Barbara Sail Away Dragon Illustrated by Randy Cecil PICTURE BOOK Candlewick Press, 2017. $15.99 Content: G.

A girl and her pet dragon want to find the far-est Far Away that they can. They go on an adventure for a year and a day and finally find a small island that conveniently has a brown sign that says “Far-est Far Away”. They rest and then both decide they want to go home. They travel for another year and a day and get home where they enjoy the comfort of their own beds.

This wasn’t my favorite book. The text is disjointed and hard to read. It’s supposed to be poetic and I’m not sure what the moral of the story is-I guess that they are good friends (which they were before the adventure started). The illustrations are dark and blurry. I would pass on this book.

A girl and her dragon set out on an adventure to the “far-est Far Away” in this whimsical tale. The unique oil painted illustrations enhance the dreamlike quality of this book. Young readers will enjoy the silliness and repetition of the journey, and they will be satisfied with the there and back story structure. I recommend this to public libraries and school libraries, especially if they have the two previous titles Lovabye Dragon and Evermore Dragon by the same author and illustrator.

  • Viviane Elbee

In this book, which continues the series of Dragon and Girl books, the two friends decide to go to the farthest “far away” place they can visit. Dragon serves as a boat, and the girl serves as a crew, and off they go sailing. It has a classic feel to it, probably partially due to the rhyme, but also because of the storyline.

I actually like this one much better than the first! It flowed better. I think that if Barbara Joose continues these little girl and dragon books they will continue to be good, I look forward to the next one.

  • Molly Cluff (Library!)

Randy Cecil is like my favorite illustrator ever, and I will never not love these books. Some people don't like the made up words and the cutesy nonsensical phrasing. I think it is the best ever. I will die on this hill XD

  • Desiree

Two like minded friends take an epic journey to far far away! Along the way that battle different foes and make some unique friends. They ultimately find that travel and adventure is wonderful, but home is best.

  • Suzanne Lorraine Kunz Williams

There are so many things about this book that I love. I love the way the dragon cares for the girl. And I love the way they the story illustrates that as humans we have needs for adventure and for home.

  • Edward Sullivan

Two friends on a faraway journey.

  • Laura McLoughlin

Not as good as the first one but better than the second. Some of the overly cute phrasing borders on annoying but I liked the adventure aspect of this one more than the 2nd book.

  • Shari

A little girl and a dragon share a dream of sailing to the far-est Far Away. Not a lot happens.

  • Laurel Kathleen

    Adorable with really cool art.

  • kim

    cute like the first one!

  • The Library Lady

    See my review of
Evermore Dragon. I feel the same way about this one.

  • Francesca

The art on this one drew me in, I enjoyed the art more than the story itself.

  • Beth Bauman

Really fun rhyming scheme on this one! :)

  • Susan

Cute but I had a hard time reading it aloud - I found the rhythm to be very awkward.

You know, just the typical story of a girl and her dragon on a journey. The whimsical story and illustrations showcase their friendship and their dreams. But even though they have great adventures and see many wonderful sights, the story also shows the importance of knowing when it's time to go back home again.

Apparently, this is the third in a series? It's a picture book that certainly reads beautifully on its own; I immediately bought their friendship without needing more. But I would certainly love to read more about the two of them! This was sweet and entertaining.

A sea faring tale of Forever Girl, and Dragon, friends, who sailed away together to the Far-est Far Away. They sailed for a year and a day, and during their travels they saw many things, but once they reached their destination they both dreamed of home, as friends sometimes do when they share a heart.
