Lincoln's Lover: Mary Lincoln in Poetry Reviews
-
Jason Emerson's historical anthology of poems that engage Mary Todd Lincoln, from before she was married to our 16th President (the first poem was written in 1839!) to contemporary poems, is interesting in a number of ways, and the historical contexts for the poems provides a deeper understanding for the readers. In the end though, many of the poems aren't that memorable beyond their affection/empathy for Mrs. Lincoln.

An interesting read - Author Emerson tells the Mary Lincoln story reinforced by a selection of poems that was written about her. Poetry was a popular form of expression in that century.

The best thing a poetry book can do is make me want to read more poetry. With its thorough contextual explanations and deep intertextual connections, this book does just that. Providing a unique angle of insight to both the character and perception of Mary Todd Lincoln, Lincoln's Lover places a life in context amid literary, societal, and historical interpretations. This book was fascinating, and I read it all in once sitting.
