Qaisar o Kisra / قیصر و کسریٰ Reviews
-
“ To the passengers of a pitch-black night who were waiting for the sunrise.”There are things I read and then there are things I avoid like the plague, non-fiction and historical fiction among them. The reason I don’t read historical fiction is because reading history puts me to sleep faster than you could say Zzzz… If it weren’t for the fact that it was given to me or that I was intent on “broadening my horizons”, Qaiser-o-Kisra would have been one of those unfortunate books that I NEVER, EVER even try to read. But I digress.
I wasn’t “gripped from the very start”. It took about 3 days for me to be drawn into it. Slowly but effectively, the story worked its spell. There is something just so comforting about reading Urdu books. The beautiful script, the words, the phrases, the sentences, they give you a sense of comfort and familiarity no book in any other language can ever hope to bestow. This was another factor involved in me enjoying it immensely. I am incredibly biased when it comes to Urdu literature and I ain’t even ashamed.I haven’t read any book like this one before so I’m not sure if the things I noticed apply to every historical fiction book; the conversations between the characters were mostly about what was happening around them than themselves. The dialogue offered very little insight as to what the person was “feeling” and their facial expressions, etc but contained heavy descriptions about the current situation, war, politics, etc. Even answers to questions simple as “how are you?” ended in about 2 or 3 paragraphs with a detailed account of everything. There was a constant recurrence of similar adverbs and adjectives. I don’t know when I started being annoyed by this in books but I am. I want things to be explained uniquely each time which admittedly is very difficult in a 700+ pages book. However, these things are merely what I found to be different from what I’m used to in books and I wasn’t perturbed.
The tale follows Asim, a young Arab belonging to the clan Aws of Yathrab (now known as Madina).
His tribe is stuck in a perpetual blood feud with the Khazraj clan. Asim unknowingly saves his enemy’s life and after suffering a tragedy banishes himself from his home, no longer caring for anything but the desire to live. All of this takes place in the backdrop of the war between Caesar or Qaiser, King of Rome, and Khosrow or Kisra, King of Iran/Persia and the Rise of Islam in Arabian Peninsula. Here’s the article I found on the subject and is worth checking out. Byzantine–Sasanian War of 602–628.

This is one of Nasim Hijazi's lengthiest historical novels. Based in 6th-7th century AD, the narrative covers the overall situation within the Sassanid (Persian) Empire and Byzantine (Roman) Empire at the time of Heraclius and Khosrow Parvez. Unlike most of his other historical fictions, this is not exactly an Islamic novel. None of the characters are Muslims, and until the very last pages of the book, there are no interactions with any Muslim. Rather, the novel gives an insight into the rest of the world at the time when Islam just began it's journey in Arabia - which was considered an insignificant power by others.
The main character, Asim, is an Arab who leaves his country, disgusted by the barbaric, bloodthirsty mentalities of his own people. He becomes a soldier in the Persian and then the Roman empire. Across Jerusalem, Constantinople and many other cities, he loses and finds love and friendships. Through his eyes we are given a glimpse into the life of a soldier of an empire at that time - the moral dilemmas, sacrifices, battles against one's own conscience, injustices, etc. The narrative is a bit lengthier than necessary. The middle part stretched so much that it felt a bit rushed at the end. Nevertheless, it was worth the read. A good read for anyone looking for details of the Roman and Persian Empires in the years before their fall. -
Qesar-o-Kasra, like the rest of Naseem Hijazi's books, falls under the category of historical fiction. This is the only novel that I have read in Urdu, yet I feel that no other Urdu novel can surpass it.
The story is set in the time when the two super powers, Rome and Persia, were at war. The main character is a young Arab man who is in search of a religion which would rescue him from all the misery, injustice and cruelty of this world.
He goes to the Romans, but he sees the same barbarism that had been in the Arabs, though wrapped in a little civility. He meets the Persians and all he finds is people who have lost their way in life and are only driven by greed for power. After years of searching he hears about a religion gaining popularity in Arab and, to quench his curiosity, returns to his homeland. There he finds Islam, the truest religion, which shows him the most humane, profound and ideal way to lead his life. -

It is Naseem Hijazi who developed a passion for reading in me. I read this book at first during my childhood. and I finished reading his every single book before matriculation. Though in the same manner, but he has covered entire Muslim history in his novels.

One of the best books I have ever read...
Read it may be 3 or 4 times...
If you want to have a glimpse of the worst situation of Arab and Non Arab just before Islam and change after Islam, don't miss this book. You will certainly be astonished. -
