It’s nearly Halloween and Gavin has a plan to wipe the boredom from his friends’ faces. Fearlessly, he sets out with Scotty and Pincher on their BMX bikes to investigate an abandoned house on the outskirts of town that will change their lives forever. For unbeknownst to them, something horrific happened within those old walls and it’s up to Gavin and his friends to stop it from happening again. Enlisting the help of his older brother, Boone, the group pours through research before weaving through the crooked tombstones of an old cemetery to find answers. Unfortunately, what they dig up will leave one of them dead.
The others will have to work together to escape the house’s sinister web. Teamwork, loyalty, and bravery are their only allies against something not of this world. Something that has been wreaking havoc on Cottage Grove for the last fifty years.
The only thing more unimaginable than what it is...is what It wants.

SCARY HOUSE featured genuinely scary scenes that I enjoyed!
There's nothing like a good haunted house tale to get my heart pumping. Combine that with a coming of age story and I should have a real winner on my hands. In this case, I did enjoy the story, it's just that I never felt quite connected to the characters.
Gavin and his friends are getting ready for Halloween and want to check out a somewhat nearby haunted house. Gavin has his new Polaroid, (this is the early 90's), and used it to take instant photos around the home. The house has a history, so when they find an old photo album still there, they flip through to find out more. It's when they come across a picture of their bikes, parked outside that they start to get the creeps. From there, as you may have guessed, things go downhill. What happens then? You'll have to read SCARY HOUSE to find out!
There's a lot of early 90's nostalgia, a Jurassic Park watch is repeatedly mentioned as are some other heavy metal and rock bands, such as Nirvana. (Which is funny to me, because the author used to be a DJ at my local rock radio station and it played a lot of music from that era.)
This book was fun and did have a cool premise. Unfortunately, I couldn't help feeling it was somewhat derivative of King's IT. (It must be hard to avoid that comparison, when it's a nostalgic coming of age story which also involves a group of kids coming back to town as adults.) The other issue I had was that I didn't care that much for the characters. That fact took a lot of tension out of the final scenes.
Overall, I did have fun with this story and would try more from Sean Thomas Fisher in the future, it's just that SCARY HOUSE didn't turn out to be ALL THAT scary for me. Your mileage may vary!
*I received a free Kindle copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. This is it.* -
This book started off good, but somewhere along the line it kind of just dropped off as I never did feel the creepiness that a normal haunted house story usually has within its pages. It had more of a twilight zone atmosphere which normally I don't mind, but not when I am going into a book thinking it is going to be a scary romp through a haunted house. Also the story jumps from the past to the present every other chapter and if you are not paying attention you could get lost about what time frame you are in.
The story is about some young friends that decide to go exploring in a haunted house that is in their neighborhood and the strange things that they encounter within its walls. I never really felt attached to the characters and maybe I was expecting too much from the book. It might be considered scarier for a younger generation, but for a seasoned horror fan, this book needs to be left on the shelf. Two stars for this one. -
There was a small kernel of a good idea in the strange pictures Gavin's camera would take (and there was absolutely no explanation, however flimsy or bizarre, of how this camera could spit out pictures with no film inside... but whatever, I guess it was supposed to be spooky) but that was not near enough to carry this story.
The boys were the standard characters found in every book about a group of kids working together to solve a mystery... wait, let me simply cut to the chase and say this book covered just about every single cliche you could ever hope to find in a coming-of-age story. If you're new to that genre, you might find this book enjoyable. If you've read a few of them before, you know exactly how this story will go.
Many minor plot points were tossed in the story and then were mostly forgotten about. And any mentions of Halloween were a total waste as it had virtually nothing to do with the actual plot other than to get the boys to check out a supposedly haunted house which might have been better set over their summer vacation from school.
There was some potential here but mostly this simply isn't a very good book. Skip it. -
SCARY HOUSE by Sean Thomas Fisher
Take the title's word for it; SCARY HOUSE Is one phenomenally frightening story. A coming of age plus adult consequences ("how do I deal with something unstoppable?"), this novel is richly layered, and could be enjoyed as a coming of age, abandoned by father, staunch friendships, meeting girls, first romance, growing to maturity, protective parent, saga. But while other individuals experience these categories of life trials and joys, not too many (I don't think) hold the adolescent dream of proving the existence of ghosts. Certainly few encounter an actively haunted house with manifestations this terrifying, nor grow to adulthood in the very real and permanent fear that the terror they battled at age 13 will return, decades later, with a horrifying agenda, an implacable destiny. This is life on the line, nitty-gritty, down to the bone, horror, and it won't stop. -
2020 reading challenge ( Halloween)
Adventurous kids stumble inside an abandoned house and get more than they bargained for. For such a long book, I can't say that I was attached to any of the characters, but I liked the story. It was kinda weird how it jumped from present, to the past, to tell another story from even further in the past. It wasn't confusing or anything, just unusual in my opinion. All I know is that I will think twice before picking up any pennies. Lol -
Great read!
I've become a huge fan of Sean Thomas Fisher and can't wait to read his next book. This story pulled me right in and kept me there! -
Scary House
Fast paced. Never boring. Can’t wait to read more books by Sean Thomas Fisher. Thank you for writing great books. -
This was definitely a fun, and spooky, Halloween season read. Actually, it was a significantly, dangerous, and terrifying house that these characters chose to explore. Gavin, (and his older brother) Scotty, and Pincher, were such cute and brave little fellas. They were humorous as well as extremely scared, and I found them to be quite entertaining. I especially liked Scotty. He was just adorable. The story was undoubtedly well written, and it totally captured the essence and every nuance of the house that they were venturing through. It held my interest, and I couldn't wait to find out the secrets that lie within the plot of this story since I was absorbed from beginning to end. :)

This was a pretty decent haunted house story and I grabbed this one up for free when it was on sale. It's now 2.99 so I got a good deal!
Three boys are looking for a haunted house, well at least Gavin is, the other two are not real thrilled about it. Gavin just got a new polaroid camera from his mom and he is wanting to find a ghost.
None of the houses they have check out have been haunted but there was something about this house that felt different. Gavin talks Scotty and Pitcher into going inside and he soon wishes he never did as this one is really haunted and there is something evil inside that wants out.
Everything in it was left just like it was in 1964 when it was said that a husband killed his wife and kid and then after their funeral hung himself. Pincher picks up the penny on the steps as they go in. They start looking in a photo album and see a picture of their bikes out by the tree and get really freaked out. Then a realtor comes and he picks up a penny on the steps and the boys wonder how he could pick up the same penny. That penny is an interesting thing about this house.
It's the penny that starts their journey into trying to figure out the haunted house because of what it does and I can't say any more.
Scary house was a pretty scary house though I did feel like the author was taking a bit from King's It, but it was still good. I have never been a fan of books that go back and forth from present day to past and at one point I was really confused. It starts out with Gavin as an adult and the spirit is back and he calls those involved in what happened years ago, then it goes back to win it all happened.
I felt the ending was a little rushed and then it just ended and I was kind of like, that is it, it's done. Overall though I enjoyed reading it. -
So good I read it in one sitting.
I really enjoyed this book. It has a great story which hooked me from the first page and I barely put it down. I really like the characters and their friendship. All the spider scenes were horrifying and the ending (adult Gavin ending more so than the last chapters of 'back then') was awesome. -
Scary House is a totally enjoyable ghost story with an inventive way to creepy out the reader….an old Polaroid camera. I love seeing kids battle evil. These kids, plus one homeless man, go to battle and do themselves proud. Delightful creepfest….oh, and spiders….really scary spiders.
