  I really liked the concept, enough to want to pick up the second book, but this felt very much like the prologue to something bigger as it was introducing you to a lot of different factions of magic and character motivations that were a little hard to keep track of, even in such a short book.

  I really enjoyed this, it has all the requirements of a classically paranormal novel. Although many of the themes in this book are not new, the plot is and a good one and this makes it a great read for all lovers the paranormal genre.
  
  The story is centred around a female protagonist that is easy to emphasise with and this makes her both realistic and likable. The paranormal community is divided into factions considered by their kind/identity and by strength of their magiçk: witches, lycan, fae, and vampires. Mel is considered one of the lesser magick variety, therefore not considered good enough to be accepted or recognised by any faction. Therefore she is persona non grata. Herein lies the problem. As the plot thickens trouble throughout the factions erupts as the story develops. The next book is available now so I'm steaming on ahead.

  I just didn't care for this book. It came off as rushed and not whole. There were a lot of unnecessary moments and moments where i felt There should have been more time flushing things out.
  The story is about a woman who lives in Galway that possesses lesser and skewed magic from the 4 factions: vampire, werewolf, witch, and fae. She has been prophesied and apparently, for some unknown reason to me, it started a mini war around the time she was born that ended up killing a bunch of babies (I guess they were afraid of what she could represent if any 1 faction got a hold of her). She gets a house call (she's a handyman) and it turns out to be werewolves. She leaves quickly but then gets abducted by people who think she is the alphas daughter and she escapes. When she gets home her roommate , a witch, witnesses her healing herself and after 2 years of secret out MC tells her everything (she is in hiding). She is very certain she needs to stay in hiding but instead she goes and outs herself to the werewolves (there's no need for this, she could have called or something) just to tell them the little girl is in danger. A fae is murdered and she finally decided to leave but then goes and joins up with the factionless people who had tried kidnapping her! What?! ANyway, there she finds out It was also 1 of them that killed the fae but it's ok because it's only a few of them who want to expose magics to the human populace (even through the talk of how bad that would be?!). She ends up calling a meeting with the alpha who gets all factions to meet and a random guy dies with hardly a peep out of her. She then gets abducted by the witches who want to kill her for protection. She escapes and then calls another meeting where she claims head of the factionless.
  While the writing itself was good, the premise was not well written. Too many things seemed forced and not realistic (like outing herself so much, going w her abductors, etc). The alpha basically carries her. Also, the author set up an intrigue w The alpha but it falls flat. I would have liked more descriptors for everything as well that are better than "I did this, which let me do this, so I could do this".
  No sex or innuendos but pg13 due to very little cussing. Some editing required but not enough to detract from reading.
  I'm not upset I took the time to read it but I was disappointed as I wasn't pulled into the story.

  My Thoughts:
  Promising start to a new-to-me series.
  
  I don't know if the author have read the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs or not, but the story arc with this series, as surmised from this book, is awfully similar to that of the Mercy Thompson series. Of course there are a few deviations like the heroine is not a coyote but a "combination of all magics"... la di bla... But, close enough that it was what made me continue reading this book in the first place. It feed my Mercy Thompson fix craving. So the theme has been around the block a few times too many, however, I do not mind non-originality. What I want is "how the story is told" quality and this book is good. Good enough to make me want to continue reading into this series. Having said that, it wasn't really that which made me buy the second book in this series but because this book ended in a cliffhanger. While it ended the plot in this book, it also left a lot of threads hanging for the next book to get bought. I usually do not like this strategy, but I understand that the publishing industry is a business.

  I gave this 2 stars because it really did have some great potential...even though I gave up at about 70%. Melanie is some super special prophecy child who is in hiding from all of the other supernaturals in the world. She believes that if anyone found out what she could do they would imprison her and exploit her powers or kill her. That being said, I have no idea how she survived to 25. Under strenuous circumstances she tells her roommate and friend the truth. That friend immediately betrays her. Instead of learning from this, she begins to tell basically everyone who would listen. I almost quit when Melanie decided that someone who just admitted to murder was trustworthy enough to know her secret...because what could go wrong. Oh and apparently because of her 5 minutes of actually being in the supernatural world she decided that she was the person who could get all the groups to go ahead and forget all the bad blood. At that point I just couldn't stand her stupidity and was starting to root for her dismemberment so I felt that was as good a place as any to give up on this one.

  While the character development wasn't as complex as I usually like, the story line carried the book and I read this one in a single sitting. By the end of the book, there are still a lot of holes in Melanie's backstory, and the ending was kind of weak/convenient, but I enjoyed the read, and loved the werewolves.

  I will continue to read the next books but need a break from it
  The only thing that I didn’t like about the book was roughly the middle part kind of dragged a little bit and didn’t reel me in

  From a mouse to a lion. That the only way to explain the girl in this book. I was hoping for a romantic connection,but maybe that will come with the next book. All in all its a good read!
