When I picked up this book as a young teen, I had no idea what it would be about. Carnival life, maybe? I couldn't have been more wrong. The book disturbed me, but I couldn't put it down. Eye-opening and heart-breaking.

This book is a disturbing portrait of an adult falling apart and becoming an increasing threat to her child - and the helpless and hopeless place that child is in, because she is only a child, and it's her word against her mother's. It terrified me when I read it, and images from it still pop into my head, decades later.

This was my second time reading this book. I read it in public school years and years ago and never forgot it. Hunted it down used on Amazon to read again...

This was a very sad but informative read.
