Alfred Hitchcock was one of the very few directors whose reputation often eclipsed that of his stars. Although he achieved his greatest success and fame in Hollywood, he was quintessentially British and the 23 films he made in Britain are very much more than apprentice work. The Lodger, Blackmail, The Man Who Knew Too Much, The 39 Steps, and The Lady Vanishes are films of enormous wit and sophistication O masterworks in their own right. Its entertaining and elegantly written text, supported by 240 well-chosen stills and frame enlargements, offers a detailed and thoroughly documented reading of the films.

English Hitchcock Reviews

I love Alfred Hitchcock's films and particularly cherish those made in England at the beginning of his career. But I didn't care much for this book at all which surprised me. The author who knows of what he speaks (or in this case, writes) turned something which could have been enjoyable into what resembled a text book study of each film with enough technical detail to overwhelm the film lover who is not a professional film maker. Maybe the author was targeting the professional rather than the casual reader. Whatever the case, I had trouble finishing it.

A good guide through Hitchcock's English films. Some are really not very good, a few are actually fun (The Lady Vanishes), but they all had a little bit of Hitchcock in them, and I enjoy watching a director find and develop their style.

I read this book in pieces as research for an essay on Alma Reville. I plan on going back and reading in more detail at some point.
