This was such a long book, although it could easily have been condensed into a short blog post. The author uses personal stories to offer inspiration and then walks you through how to pose, where to sit, when to do, how to breathe, what chakras (sp?) to visualize, etc. for 20+ meditations to do things like get over grief, find love and lose weight. In each case, you get a long winded personal story and then lots of inspirational cheerleading with a smattering of quotes from famous motivational speakers and the bible , then you have some mantras to pick from that you say to yourself for four minutes. Ironically, it takes you a half an hour to read any of these four minute meditations.

I'm in the process of reading through some ARCs of books that I downloaded right before one of my kids had a health crisis, that sat on my Kindle unread. I'm working my way through them to finally give feedback. If not for that, I would not have finished this one. I really had to push myself to keep plodding away at it.

I was torn whether to give 2 or 3 stars, and ultimately rounded up to 3 because it will likely be helpful for people who enjoy this sort of thing and out of guilt for taking so long to review it. This will be a great book for some, but it wasn't for me.

  • Sarah (Workaday Reads)

This was a clear, simply written book that stripped away the mystery and complication of meditation, and made it real for every day life. It really helped me see that I don't need to "get ready" or "get set up" for meditation, it can be done anywhere, at anytime.

The format felt like a mix of personal story and instructional, told in a cohesive and flowy way.

I took my time reading it, mainly because I wanted to absorb and incorporate the knowledge into my life and my thought process. It's a very positive and informative read, and I'm happy I started the year off with it.

I think this book would be great for anyone wishing to start a meditation practice and not just those who think they don't have enough time. It really felt like a friend talking me through every aspect of the meditation process.

If I had one regret it was that I was reading this on kindle and what I really would have wanted was a physical book that I could refer to and put sticky markers in the pages. I have now ordered a paperback copy as it will work better for me.

I received a free copy via NetGalley and my thanks to Hay House for that.

  • Karly

Overall, I learned a few tricks and tips for meditation. However I feel like they could have been summed up in a brochure. Lots of repetition and side bars that I didn't find helpful on my journey to meditation.

I did like reading about the author's journey to meditation throughout the book, so that part could be in the brochure too ;P

  • Amy

This is the best book on meditation I've ever read. It's accessible, simple without being condescending, not overtly spiritual (at least not enough to make this atheist uncomfortable), and there are real moments of humor in it.

The author does a great job of using vignettes from her life to show how meditation can help anyone.

I'm not doing 4 minutes every day, but I've done more meditation since picking up the book than I'd done in a long time. I find that getting up before the rest of my family is the best time for me to spend my four minutes. (I get up, start the coffee, meditate, and then am rewarded with inner peace and inner caffeine.)

Fair warning, though. This book made me cry. There were so many bits and pieces that I desperately needed to hear and it triggered a major emotional response.

Your situation may look like a mess. That's real. But you are not that mess.
    ^^This^^

It's been a tough year. Between the divorce and losing my day job, things have felt pretty desperate, and it's hard to look at my situation and separate it from me. Reading this book was like shining a light on the darkness I've been harboring.

Side note: I had a conversation with a dear friend last week. He asked me how he could assure a friend that she wasn't a failure because (a) her relationship failed, (b) no one liked her erstwhile partner, and (c) she didn't know said partner was unsuitable right away, and even when she knew, she stayed for a bit. I was able to give the best advice on that...advice that I should probably take for myself. My biggest pet peeve as a divorced person is the term "failed marriage." Ending is not failure. (Repeat, Amy. This is your mantra. Well, this and "You are not that mess.")

    Back to the review!

One of the biggest stressors in the last year has been money. Just when I started to get back on my feet post-divorce, I lost my job. Unemployment doesn't cover my living expenses, and I quickly ran through my savings. So much of my self-worth is tied into my financial independence. I am not currently at a place of financial independence, and I'm so very fortunate that I have people willing to help me out until I am back to that place.

    Rebekah asks:

If I separate myself form the idea that I don't have enough money right now, how do I feel? Can I feel contentment even if these so-called negative circumstances remain true?

You know what? When I'm not stressed about money, I feel pretty damn content with my life. Obviously pretending that I have money I don't have is not going to work out as a career-path (I'm guessing I can't pay my car loan with contentment points), but it's easier to breath when I remind myself that my current lack of solvency is not a reflection on my self-worth.

This book came at a time in my life when I needed those reminders - it's so important to take the time to separate yourself, the parts that make you you, from the circumstances you find yourself in. Sure, in part, you shape your world, but just because things are hard, or crappy doesn't mean you have to internalize it.
I plan on continuing to follow the meditations in the book. The one I've been using the last couple of weeks is "You Have 4 Minutes to Accept Where You Are in the Moment." The mantras associated with this meditation are exactly what I need to remind myself of every day.

I am not broken or in need of fixing.

I am worthy of being heard and of being loved as I am in this moment.

My inner voice is wise, and I allow myself to listen to it without judgment.

If you're interested in starting a meditation practice but are intimidated by the idea of quieting your mind for 30 minutes, this is the place for you. Four minutes doesn't sound like a lot, but it's really making a difference for me.

As a yoga instructor, I've read many meditation books and this is by far my favorite, especially for those new to the practice. It demystifies meditation and makes it super accessible even for those who may not feel like they are the meditating type. I loved how many meditations were included, and think that this is an invaluable tool for anyone looking to bring meditation into their life - even if they only have 4 minutes :)

I am found this book from emails from Hayhouse Press (spiritual and self-help, founded by Louise Hay). Like any voracious book-reader looking to save money, I found and checked a free copy from the library. But I love it so much I am going to buy my own copy.

In this book, the author teaches something that I have been teaching my Reiki students since 1998: that you don't need to sit in meditation for long lengths of time. It is more important to sit every day, even if it's 5 minutes and that 5 minutes can transform your life. She, of course, is recommending 4 minutes = even better LOL.

Please read this book, even if you already meditate, it is filled with wonderful tips to practice meditation and reconnect with simplicity & joy.

If you don't meditate but want to do it or have tried and felt like you failed or you struggled - read this book!

If you have stress, anxiety, fear, negativity, bad boundaries, are struggling with an addiction, perfectionism, or just want to remake yourself into a better version of yourself = read this book!

If you have kids that are acting out or you want to model good energy and help them deal with their issues in a better way, read this book and meditate together.

My only criticism in what I have seen so far is there are some weird spacing issues that caused some confusion because illustrations were tied to the next section's words. It may be because I am reading a Kindle version with huge text.

For someone new to meditation this book was pretty handy. I was introduced to meditation while in nursing school to help me get control of my anxiety before exams. I discovered Bex via her YouTube channel. When I learned he had a book I went ahead and purchased it. While her backstory and her own introduction to meditation weren’t really relevant to meditation itself, it was helpful to see and understand how devoting only a few minutes helped her. The mantras she uses in the book don’t really fit my life, but it gave me the confidence to wildlife my own. This is a good place to start for anyone new to meditation and lives a busy life like myself.

Meditation is one of those things that we constantly hear about these days - we know it's good for us and everyone is trying it, from hippies to yuppies to Wall Street big wigs. But it also sounds scary and hard.

Rebekah Borucki takes the guesswork out of it and brings it to a level of accessibility that you've never seen before. Everyone thinks they're too busy to meditate, but she's a mom of five with her own multiple-business empire so if she can find the time to change her life with meditation then anyone can. ANYONE.

It doesn't matter what you're looking for. Whether you want less stress and anxiety, more abundance, or you just want to love what you see in the mirror, there's a meditation in here for you. And this isn't just a dry how-to guide, it's full of personal stories that are the perfect example of how that particular meditation can, yes, change your life.

If you've ever EVER said, "I'd probably love meditation but I just don't even know where to get started" or "who has time for meditation anyway?" then this is exactly what you need.

  • ProfBen10

This is a good guide for those who are beginners in mindfulness meditations.
I suggest reading about one chapter a day, rather than the entire book in one sitting. Maybe even practice one meditation each day.

Author gives a step by step of each meditation and gives powerful examples of how it's been useful in her life.

While reading the author's personal anecdotes aren't necessary for practicing the meditations, I would highly recommend it if you want to get the most out of this book. All in all, well worth your time.

  • Amy

I was really surprised by this book. I couldn’t bring myself to finish it - I had to abandon it half way, which I never do. It was repetitive and boring. Nothing to do with the origin or spirituality of meditation. To me it read more like a last resort for someone who feels otherwise helpless. The mantras were ridiculous, and again not what meditation is about. I really have nothing good to say about this book.

  • Debbie

Just what I expected from this amazing guru

I followed this author, her YouTube videos, and her blogs for years now . I am not surprised that her first book is beyond amazing and so enlightening . The way she tells stories about her self, the way she let us into her life and the way she made me laugh throughout the book at certain times just makes me love this book even more . I started meditating because of Rebecca Borucki and I will continue to do it with her thought-provoking book and her tips . I can only get better with her inspiration and advice .

  • Shayla Bateman

Even though I didn’t try any of the meditations in this book, it was still really insightful and it opened my eyes and heart to a lot of different things. I’ve also used some of the breathing techniques and used mantras that were inspired by this book. I will definitely be re-reading this book in the future.

  • Lisa

Couldn't have asked for a better book when it comes to meditation. This one is staying on the coffee table for daily reference and I've also taken it with me for relaxing reading while waiting at doctor appointments.

  • Jamie

Great read.... not really the kind of book you want to read from start to finish all at one time. There is a lot of good information, and fast, easy meditations.

  • Amanda

Excellent and practical guide on how to meditate. Each chapter has helpful tips (or suggestions) for self-guided meditation.

  • WellReadNegress

Loved this book! Perfect balance of perdonalnm stories and great meditation instructionals!

  • Jamie Stucin

    Not what I was expecting.

  • MCHammer

I found the book well written but to be more of a directory of meditations. It did not make for a page turner of a book. However, I will revisit this book when I am ready to meditate.

  • Lindsay Tritabaugh

Good book for someone new to meditation. Starting with 4 minutes is a great way to start your practice. Fairly quick read, a bit repetitive. Took away a few tidbits of new info that I can use.

  • Laura Moon

    Love love love Rebekah

  • Rebecca Malinky

A really nice resource for future meditations.

  • Kim

a quick fix for your meditation needs....food for thought and it does not take a ton of time...worth the read on an as-needed basis...i highly recommend

  • Danielle

For years, I've known the benefits of meditation, but failed to find a way to incorporate it into my daily routine. It always seemed like something I *should* do, but didn't. This book finally made meditation feel accessible. The meditations included are practical and they are simple for a beginner. I've already incorporated daily meditations using the techniques provided in this book. A great read, especially if you believe you don't have time to meditate.

    Zusammengefasst

Summary: tackling different mindset struggles with targeted 4 minute meditations

Review: I started this book years ago. The first part is set up/ background, then she gets into different issues and meditation instructions for each. This has helped tremendously this year. Lots of dog-eared pages.

  • Stephanie Robbins

This is an amazing book for anyone feel frazzled by life and looking for a way to find inner peace and self-love. It goes beyond the basics of meditation (which is made easy with step by step instructions) and focuses on the healing components of meditation and being true to yourself. Rebekah's personal stories are beyond inspiring while remaining completely relatable.

Each meditation begins with a story setting relevance and creating intimacy and trust with the author. Once the story is complete, the author provides clear instructions on how to get the most out of your meditation. The meditations are easy and powerful.

I love how the meditations are broken out based on what your need or how you feel. I don't think I will ever be 'done' with this book. Instead it will be a fixture on my bedside table for when I need it.
