The sun is dying. The world has turned to ice. Only the Sunlord can keep humanity alive.

Deril was supposed to be the next Sunlord, following in his father’s footsteps. But it doesn’t matter how much Deril trains. He is no savior, just an ordinary Sunweaver, powerful but useless. But then Fireweavers kidnap his father, intending to use his Sunlord powers to free their mad god. Now Deril must infiltrate a secret Fireweaver organization and earn their trust. If he doesn't, the mad god will kill all Sunweavers. Driven insane by centuries of imprisonment, he may even finish what he started...and destroy the sun entirely.

Rella is a Fireweaver living in secret. When her powers are discovered, she must flee to the frozen wasteland Fireweavers call home. There, she’ll come face-to-face with her family’s darkest secrets and with the plot to free the mad god. She has the chance to stop it, but first she’ll have to decide if she can support Sunweavers, the people who executed her mother. The people who would do the same to her without a thought.

Kadin is Lightless. He has no Sunweaving or Fireweaving talent. Sold into slavery by his abusive father, he struggles to survive under his cruel master. But when Kadin manifests strange abilities, he begins to suspect he isn't as powerless as he once thought. He may even be the key to stopping the mad god's return...but only if he first conquers the anger and darkness within him.

Sunweaver (Sunweaver, #1) Reviews

This is my own book, so I'm not going to give it a star rating. Instead, this is an informational review.

This book has been with me in some form for almost four years now. It's set in a world where a previous war between the gods resulted in a drastically weakened sun. The god who almost destroyed the sun has been imprisoned, but those he gifted with his magic remain.

The start of this book takes place in Sunweaver society. They're the group of magic users whose powers come from the sun, while the other magic users are Fireweavers, whose magic comes from the planet's core. The latter power is believed by many to be evil because it's the kind of magic possessed by Halarik, the god who weakened the sun.

The magic in this world has led to a bitter divide between Sunweavers and Fireweavers. Anyone discovered to be a Fireweaver within Sunweaver society is executed. Most Fireweavers have chosen to live in exile in an area known as the Frozen Lands.

Sunweaver society also has a rigid caste system. Sunweavers are atop the social ladder because of the wide variety of magic they can use. Then there are Suncasters, who can only use one type of magic. They still hold a privileged position in society, but it's nowhere near the status of Sunweavers. Finally, there are the Lightless. They are the underclass in society, people with no powers at all. Although they're more numerous, their lack of powers makes them too weak to fight back.

In the story, I follow three main characters. Deril is a Sunweaver and the son of the Sunlord, who can use his magical powers to sustain the sun. Rella is a Fireweaver living in secret within Sunweaver society. Kadin is a Lightless boy who is sold into slavery by his abusive father. They all have their roles to play in an intertwined story.

Overall, this story is quite different from my first published novel, Empire of Chains. Empire of Chains is a more traditional quest fantasy, while Sunweaver has fewer quest elements and more of a focus on how the world's history and magic shape the conflict and prejudices of the world. There are still plenty of action sequences, and as the series progresses, you'll see plenty of adventure.

Well, if you read this far, I hope you'll give Sunweaver a chance.
