Paul Bunyan: The True Story Reviews
-
Kids will love this action packed adventure of the legendary Paul Bunyan by Steve Mann.
Paul and his pal Henry arrive at a logging camp only to learn that they have a mission: to restore the territory to its rightful owners, the chieftain of the Tapawanachee tribe, John Crowfoot and his daughter, Mary.
Hardboard, the mean boss, had tricked the chieftain out of his ownership, and now, Mary is reduced to being a servant girl and John Crowfoot, a logger. Hardwood exploits and robs the loggers. His wife, Lizzy, is equally nasty, but she wears the key that will open the safe box with the illegal deed inside.
Will Paul be able to restore the deed to its owners, as he promised? He is good-hearted, but, as his pal reminds him more than once, he often gets both of them into trouble.
Yet, who but Paul has the strength to bend the bars and escape from jail? Who else can cut sixteen trees in one morning while the other loggers can only cut one? And, who else can eat 75 ½ hotcakes for breakfast? The normally tough loggers are so aghast at his powers that they take bets on the number of hotcakes he is going to consume.
We are introduced to the life of the loggers of the upper Midwest as Paul and Henry arrive in Darnwood, and they see the rough hewn chairs and tables where the men take their meals. We sit in the church and hear a questionable sermon by the unqualified Father Dooley. We visit a sawmill where Paul helps to ease the jam he created by cutting so many trees in such a short time.
The illustrations are great. I found myself chuckling out loud at the many funny scenes, for example when the cold blooded Lizzy emerges from her bathtub, slips on some muffins and ends up naked on the floor just as Father Dooley is opening the door.
Kids and parents will be turning the pages, wanting to find out what happens next, all the while being captivated by the exploits of Paul, Henry and other colorful characters in the book. -
As Paul and Henry hiked to Darnwood, they never knew, what story they been told by the Tapawanachee tribe, how they were cheated out of their land. Being horrified to hear the story, they promised Mary and her husband, the rightful owners of the land, that they will help them to get their land back.
But meeting Hardboard, the cheater, they found out what a hardcore he really was.
But that is not all. but I won't say more. You have to get the book to find out what really happened.
With amazing and funny pictures throughout the book
