Excerpt from Livestock and Poultry Situation and Outlook Report, Vol. 52: February 1992
Although the 1991 calf crop was about unchanged from a year earlier at million head, reduced feedlot placements in second-half 1991 and lower calf slaughter caused a 5-per cent rise in feeder cattle supplies outside feedlots. The calf supply was unchanged, but the supply of yearling cattle was up 11 percent. The yearling increase continues to reflect genetic shifts to cattle that reach heavier weights at younger ages. Thus, a larger proportion of the previous year's calf crop weighed over 500 pounds.
