As the final hours of 1921 tick down, Clara Fitzgerald, Brighton's first female private detective, and Captain O'Harris prepare to celebrate New Year's Eve aboard the liner Mary Jane. Little do they know that the evening is going to be disrupted by the discovery of a mine in the water. In the ensuing panic, a guest disappears and is found dead, murdered by someone aboard the ship. The victim's identity is a mystery, as much as why he was killed.

Now Clara must offer her help to the unfortunate Captain Pevsner and attempt to solve the crime before the night is over and all her suspects abandon ship. But who is the murdered man and why would anyone want to kill him? Accompanied by Captain O'Harris, Clara sets off in a race against time to bring a murderer to justice and to prove her worth as a private detective.

    A ship's last voyage interrupted by a mine and murder

    Clara and Captain O'Harris are aboard the Mary Jane for a New Year's Eve cruise when the ship strikes a mine. In the ensuing chaos as the party goers are evacuated into the lifeboats one declares he's not getting in and vanishes back into the ship.

    With the mine discharged safely the lifeboats return to the ship and the party looks set to continue without further issue until the kitchen crew discover the body of the belligerent guest lying in a pool of blood in the galley.

    Captain Pevsner has heard of Clara's reputation and rather than turning about and potentially losing the murderer as everyone disembarks asks her to discretely look into the case prior to them docking the next day.

    Managing to find a charming lost boy, Bert aged 6, who has been wandering the ship looking for his Mummy who saw "a man standing by another man lying down" gives her a good idea of the guilty party but it's motive Clara needs to be able to ensure that justice is indeed done as the killer flaunts her lack of it and taunts her with the ease he can explain away the limited evidence she has.

    When Inspector Park-Coombes arrives to take charge the next morning he's relying on Clara and Captain O'Harris to visit the victims family and workplace to fill in the missing links and provide the final puzzle pieces.

    Enjoyable read with plenty of twists and turns to ensure you're entertained to the very end..

    This was an unusual one in the series because:

    (1) It takes place within a 24-hour time period;

    (2) There is no Tommy or Annie at all (save for a brief telephone call); and

    (3) You find out the murderer about halfway through the book and the rest of the book is about finding out the killer's motive.

    O'Harris is growing on me. I didn't really like him that much before this.

    I tend to prefer finding out the killer at the end. It's not as thrilling to find out halfway through. Still, I enjoyed this installment and look forward to reading the next one.

    Unputdownable

    She has done it again. What a good storyteller Evelyn James is. I have read all the books in this series and thoroughly enjoyed them. This one is one of the best. I highly recommend this series. Can't wait for the next one.

    Charming

    A delightful mystery story. I love these Christie style stories. I really like the quaint ness and simplicity of these period tales.
