The Eyes of Buddha Reviews

John Ball's fifth novel featuring Virgil Tibbs sees the brilliant detective on the serach for a missing girl. Despite a year of investigation the case remains open & the girl's parents ask if Tibbs can bring new light to the case.
Ball deftly plots another challenging case for Tibbs, but almost spoils it for me on a couple of occasions. At one point someone mentions the film In the Heat of the Night & someone else says that Tibbs doesn't look much like Sidney Poitier. I can esaily suspend my disbelief & enoy a novel, but I really dislike it when an author breaks the fourth wall & has a fictional character enter the real world. It takes me away from being engrossed with the story, but I realise some readers may have no probelm with this at all & don't get as annoyed with it as I do.
John Ball only wrote seven Virgil Tibbs novels & a few short stories, so I am trying to read only one a year as I enjoy them so much & want them to last. Looking forward to book six in 2023.

JDB continues to flesh out the life of his fictionally-non-fictional Mr Tibbs, and once again he is shown to inhabit a world where other famous detectives live and breathe - Holmes again, but this time Mr. Moto and Inspector Bonaparte join in - and if anyone knows who the old later he visits with the hard eye for diction and a dead husband is meant to be, please tip me to it.

The world-building aside, the story stands with any of the others, intricate, detailed, and compelling.

Great series based on only African American homicide detective on the Pasadena police force.
