Not a review. Includes my story "To This, You Cling, With Jagged Fingernails."

If I hadn’t already returned to physical books because of poetry, Fireside Quarterly, the new physical artifact available for subscription from Fireside Magazine, would have convinced me immediately. I’m in awe of this publication’s design and artistry.

Many great stories in this issue. Here's my thoughts on just one of them:

“CARBORUNDORUM > /DEV/NULL” by Annalee Flower Horne reminds us that emerging technologies for concerned parents will likely still lead to new opportunities for old violences in the future. It’s hopeful, heartbreaking, and enraging. The technology is brilliantly shown through scenic action and character development instead of exposition, leading into a tense situation in which the protagonist must race against time to save her best friend.

This was a high quality issue - that sadly was not to my personal taste. It was just a little bit too literary for me. Quite a few of the stories were more vignettes than true stories, but to be fair this included my favorite, "The Ceremony." (but then, I have a weakness for twisted fairy tales).

If you enjoy literary short stories, most of them very short, you probably should consider subscribing. If you prefer more action and a more transparent writing style, then it's not for you. But that's not a knock on the quality - Fireside has a very distinctive editorial style that is bound to please some and not others.

I reviewed this at Lady Business; my favourite story was To This You Cling, With Jagged Fingernails, although the most memorable was probably CARBORUNDUM >DEV/NULL.
