Vampire Hearts: Book One of Bathory Academy Reviews
-
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
“Start on the whistle and end on the whistle, people —and try to survive in between.”
This is a book about Alexander who found out he was a vampire and was sent to Bathory Academy after being raised in a human world. There he met Scarlett Bathory and instantly feeling connected in a way both of them never felt before. He then realized being a vampire is not easy especially when you know nothing about it and most of your friends have an attitude. Turned out, that wasn't the only problem Alexander has to faced. Danger were lurking and has set an eye on his friend. Will he able to prevent any harm coming for her while also trying so hard to understand all the vampire stuff and being caught up in the dilema of his heart?
First of all, I must say I'm surprised. I picked this book not having any expectation. I haven't read about vampires in a pretty long time so when I read the blurb I was like “Okay, this sounds good. Let's give it a try.” Well now, I'm glad I did give it a try.
The writing was enjoyable, it was easy to build your imagination and get lost in the world inside the book. The characters were great, they didn't particularly shine but the author succeeded in exploring each of their unique characteristics so it was easy to get to know them and follow their story. There are even a few characters that attracted my attention. Even though they're already great, I surely want them to develop more in the future.
The story was interesting and it has a great pace. I didn't have to wait too long until I found myself diving deep into the book. The world-building and the plot was amazing. It started out as a story of a teenage boy struggling to accept his identity as a vampire. From there, it developed into the secret of family bloodline, politics, rebellion. I even found hints of possible future betrayals. All of it was written through third person POV. And even though this book main focus was on the present, I got a glimpse of Alexander's life before he went to Academy and I loved it.
But there are some things that bothered me. First, the insta-love. I was actually fine by the idea of it if it wasn't so cringey I have to roll my eyes a dozen times. Second, why would the author had to have these characters be worrying over who ended up being someone's swan rather than focusing on important stuff. It was kinda disappointing, really. FYI, swan is a word for someone who willingly gave their blood to a vampire until the vampire get rid of them. As it described in the book, it's a mutually shared pleasure. Third, throughout the book, I found a handful of typos. It's not a big deal but it'd be great if there wasn't any.
Overall, as the first book in the series, Vampire Heart was good. It has a lot of potential and I hope the next books would be better. Looking forward about how the story will go.

I think 3-3.5 stars for me. The premise and the uniqueness of the backstory really made the book for me. I am loving how really rich the world building is here, pulling together some of the oldies with a whole lot of newbie made for a really great read. The very clever and subtle name drops made me feel like I belonged. I had no trouble sinking right into the world and scenes and honestly there was enough going on that I remained invested from cover to cover; however all that being said it really did take us a while to really get anywhere and by the end of the book I really don't feel like we made a lot of progress plot wise. If we really break it down there was a back and forth of scenes that instead of keeping up moving forward kept us kind of stagnant throughout the first book. This is interwoven with backstory and some reveals here and there as well as introduction to new characters so I never really felt bored but I can definitely see where the repetition of certain actions could loose some readers.
Alex, our MC, has just found out he is a born vampire (inter generational - meaning his parents were not vampires but the gene passed to him from his grandfather.) Rushed off to Bathory Academy school for supernatural, Alex is thrust into a hierarchical Vampire system that doesn't quite sit well with his millennial upbringing nor his hero complex. He also is having a hard time with self acceptance, refusing to feed. Scarlet our FMC is the darling of Bathory Academy, also with some "revolutionary" views herself. Scarlet comes with her own drama and has conflict with how she was raised and her belief system herself. Alex and Scarlet have a somewhat instant connection which slowly reveals itself to perhaps being more than just fate. As Scarlet becomes a target from a religious group hell bent on destroying all vampires especially those from her line, and the Supernatural community becomes embroiled in more and more turmoil as the fascist system they have been living under for centuries reaches closer to a breaking point, the students at Bathory Academy as well as Alex and Scarlet must come to realize their parts in the future of supernaturals as well as deal with this mysterious connection.
I think we are store for a healthy amount of problems as the students aren't in possession of all the information like the teachers/adults. The withholding of information always causes issues and drags a story out longer than necessary so I'll have to keep that in mind for when the next book comes out. All in all though I thought this was an interesting and entertaining read and am looking forward to book 2 hoping we really get somewhere there.

This is a story about a boy who has been sent to a school for vampires, after being raised by humans. He finds himself shipped off, after a tragic incident involving a human girl.
He really knows nothing about vampires and their world, other than what his grandfather briefly told him. Whilst he is trying to navigate his whole new life, enemies are trying to get to his new found friends.
I was quite excited to read this book, I really thought yes! A book similar too Vampire Academy & House Of Night, but it didn't quite get there for me.
I really did enjoy the story line, I just felt like all the mystery was just getting dragged out alot more than what was necessary.
I spent the whole book hoping someone would finally actually answer any of the questions poor Alexander asked.
I think I have even more questions than him! Haha
I will more than likely read the second book to see how it picks up, once Alexander knows everything there is too know about himself and this mysterious world.
I want to say thank you to net galley for providing me a copy of Vampire Hearts in exchange for an honest review. This is my personal opinion of the book. -

This book was received as an ARC from BooksGoSocial in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book was intense. This was a storyline that was completely unexpected. I wanted to read this book because I thought it would have a similar plot to vampire academy by Richelle Mead. It is similar where Alexander has to attend Bathory Academy after he figures out he is a vampire but it had a dark twist to the book as well when he murders a young girl and does not even know what he is capable of. Thinking that sending him to the academy would be good for him, he does not expect to meet others such as Scarlett who has a very deahtly persona to her and is set to end him once and for all, until she ends up falling for Alexander and is bound to save him. My adrenaline was a full rush by the end of the book and the book definitely had a dark twist.
We will consider adding this title to our Supernatural collection at our library. That is why we give this book 4 stars. -
This book has so much potential. This has Vampire Academy vibes if you read the synopsis. The writing really fell short for me. The story in and of itself isn’t bad. Just the writing needs a lot of work. I think once that gets straightened out this could be a fantastic series.

This is only the second book of the Katie’s that I've read. The first was The Crow Man.
I've got to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Because of my love are vampires and the supernatural I was more than a little excited to see this released! I read it in about 6 hours too.
Bathory Academy is the school/college supernaturals, Bathory is no ordinary college, it has been home to some of the most notorious vampire families in the world. Now it has become the home of Alexander Augustine.
Alexander is there because he's only just emerging as a vampire and had an incident with a human that meant he had nowhere else to go. He was taken to Bathory by his grandfather. Bathory has everything he needs to complete his emergence into the vampire world.
The plot, I thought was good, it flows seamlessly through every scene. I love the idea that there is a school/college for the supernatural. But it's not just the supernatural, there are students there that aren't quite supernatural, but they identify with being supernatural, for example:
“The rest of the academy, which is made up of
approximately a hundred students, are vampeers, those who identify themselves as vampires, or otherkin, those who identify themselves with other supernatural beings. They are sons and daughters of the night; they all have extraordinary creative, technological, scientific or sporting talents; empaths, artists, poets, alchemists, athletes, creatives–those who see beyond the boundaries and limitations of being human. In most cases, there is some distant familial vampire blood connection, but not enough to fill them with the same vital needs as true vampires."
Katie M John has set up this world extremely well. Within the walls of the Bathory Academy, there is an entire world. There appears to be a very clear divide between the students; they appear to be divided into groups and each group appears to have its own structure that is respected.
Each character has their own role to play and the more of the story I read the more I discovered about them, they interact well together, and the relationships are very realistic, easy to identify with from when I was at school (many, many years ago)!
Alexander, for me, was really easy to identify with. I'm sure most of us have been in a situation or 3 where we felt completely out of place, or where we don't really belong, to me that's how Alexander came across. Not only is he trying to find his feet is a vampire but also within the Academy too, not an easy feat.
Katie M Johns writing is fabulous. She has set the scene well, she has given each of her characters complex and realistic personalities. I love how the more I read the more I discovered about the families, the characters and their backgrounds. I felt as though I was being led through the story by a breadcrumb trail.
Vampire Hearts sets up the beginning of this series well, it gives the detail that is needed to allow the reader to create a firm and clear image of the story and its characters. It is a great start to this series and I think it will get better with each book.
I cannot wait for book 2, and to see what is in store for these characters next. -
This book drew me in and held me delightfully-captive from beginning to end. The characters were realistic, likable and identifiable. And, every settings was described in such a way as to make me feel like I was an actual bystander in that scene. Once I started reading this story, I knew this was a book I wasn’t going to be able to put down! This was paranormal at its vampiest!

Thank you NetGalley for the e-ARC of Vampire Hearts: Book One of Bathory Academy
Alexander is an 18-year-old Monarchy who has arrived at Bathory Academy because for the first 18 years of his life he has been living with humans, but his vampire tendencies have recently started to get out of control. We are then introduced to the Bathory sisters, Scarlett and Charlotte, who are also Monarchies. You can already see how powerful they are at this academy (hint hint their great, great, great grandmother Elizabeth founded the academy) and they sometimes come across as arrogant in some situations, but who can blame them when the whole reason vampeers and otherkins are able to exist safely is because of their ancestor, so let them be proud and cocky about it.
One thing I truly dislike in novels is the insta-love trope, which unfortunately for me happens in this novel. The insta-love happens between Alexander and Scarlett in literally a couple of lines in this novel. Within the first two pages, we already see the guy falling for the girl because of the way she played the piano:
“He couldn’t see any more of her than her straight back, wrapped tightly in red fabric and shaped like a cello, all curves and grace”
"Alexander’s already beating heart, speed up even more…”
"Alexander suddenly believed in love at first sight” [ 5% Loc 135 of 2786 ]
There was also this weird and creepy encounter at the beginning with the “Head of the Academy, Madam De’ Arth”, which was said in a “delicious French accent”.
“Even though she was an elder, Alexander found Madam De’Arth hot” (cringeeee)
Then Alexander proceeds to describe his headmaster in detail, even going as far as complimenting the way her “black blouse left little to the imagination" because that's what we all do with our headmasters. Then he gets caught because, obviously, she can read his mind. (duh)
The writing of this book did not really appeal to me. I felt like at times it would be very descriptive and the imagery was amazing, but other times it fell flat- almost like it was written by a grade school student. The dialogue was really weird; sometimes it would be oddly formal between the characters who are supposed to be the same age, and then it would go back to the informal/casual tone.
The characterisation is a bit messy. Alexander is supposed to be from London, Britain (?) yet he uses no to very little Londoner/British slang, "pardon" being one of them- plus isn’t he like 18 and not some Duke or Lord so I’d assume that he picks up on the slang. Instead, he uses “pretty neat” and “Totes” which I’m pretty sure isn't Londoner slang, but whateverrrrrrr.
He's also apparently a Team Captain of a Rugby team but got tired of walking during a tour of the academy- and Scarlett even called him out for it. There were also a lot of inconsistencies when describing Alexander’s personality because when we first meet him he's “bashful” when complimented, yet he was “simmering” in “quiet range” when Charlotte wouldn’t shake his hand. Another instance of inconsistency: Scarlett said something about “not caring for Alexander Augustine” but then proceeds to describe his “ridiculously handsome good looks” in the same paragraph (eye roll)
Of course we also have a love triangle trope between Alexander, Scarlett and Bryon, which I felt like was poorly written. It was not enjoyable and I found myself rooting for no side and just wanting Scarlett to stay single for the rest of her vampire life. Fun fact- Byron is a descendant of Jack the Ripper (that makes no sense to me but whatever it’s fiction)
As for the plot, the first couple of chapters was only an introduction to the characters and setting (even if it was a messy and inconsistent one), and I felt like the plot did not really start till Chapter 7- or at least it was at Chapter 7 that something actually happens.
There were some grammar mistakes and sometimes the author forgets to place speech marks in dialogues:
"It’s [a] place to grow an understanding…”
Overall I would give this book 1 star and would only recommend this to people who like this author’s writing style and maybe fans of the author. To be honest there were times where I felt like skimming through the pages or DNF-ing the book but I wanted to give it a chance.

Vampire Hearts was an out of comfort zone read for me, whilst I love a great fantasy, paranormal just doesn’t hold the sway. However, I was completely drawn in by the blurb of this book and I am so happy I took the plunge. Vampire Hearts is an outstanding read!
From the moment you walk through the doors into the sumptuous surroundings of the Bathory Academy, you are immersed into the decadent world. I have to say that as it’s a genre that I dont often read, I found myself very much identifying with Alexander as he traversed not only his new surroundings but also a whole new etiquette and lore. Finely balanced social networks and heirarchies leave his head spinning, so far removed from the “normal” life he left behind. I loved how his story unfolded throughout the book, the author very cleverly balancing story arc and necessary information so it never felt overwhelming for a first book establishing a series.
Alexander finds himself thrown in with the Monarchy, those descended from the royal bloodlines, including the Bathory sisters themselves, Scarlett and Charlotte. With an instant connection to Scarlett he must battle the ever watchful eye of her boyfriend Byron, who just happens to by a descendant of Jack the Ripper! All the characters are wonderfully written and realised, I’m so excited to find out more about their stories in future books.
Vampire hearts is pitched at an upper YA/NA range and the start of more adult themes is growing, I like that is a real feel of a slow burn though with the characters, which is always my favourite! Plot wise there is a ton going on, having established the main players we are quickly introduced to the big bad of the series, the mysterious “Saints” and as the plot unfolds and we learn more about students and teachers at the Academy many of whom have more going on than first meets the eye and some more dangerous than others.
It’s rare that I will have the chance to finish a book in a day any more, but Vampire Hearts was one that I just could not put down, there are no moments that drag or feel over complicated and if, like me, you’re pretty new to the vampire genre, there is nothing to fear! It’s a wonderful and rich world that has been created and November can’t come soon enough to find out more in book 2! -
I'm still not certain how I feel about this story. I've never read any of the stories this was compared to, so I went into this with fresh eyes. It seemed a bit.... harem like to me? Or in some cases reverse harem? You have your "monarchy" aka your vampires (who are both male and female), and they each have "swans" aka people (male or female in some cases both) in which they drink from. Apparently its a very sexual experience. Don't get me wrong, there is some action and some mystery also contained within this novel, but being that Alex is somehow brand new to the vampire lifestyle, as a reader I didn't buy his story. It seemed way too unbelievable that not only did he have no idea what he was, but he would rather grow weak and die than do what he needed to survive.
There is a lot of potential here though, both with Alex's story and with the whole Saints and Renaissance story-lines that are also simultaneously playing out. I may eventually pick up the second book in this series (even though I'm not sure if its the final one or not), and I would read more from this author. My to-be-read pile is a bit too big for that right now however.
I do believe this will appeal to those who enjoy supernatural stories with interesting twists.

A fun little freebie from Netgalley!
Given the fact that this is part of a series and has been published, I was surprised at the amount of typos and grammar mistakes. It didn’t detract from the enjoyment of the book, but I definitely noticed them and it pulled me out of the story a bit. I think it needs to be gone over again by a diligent editor!!
This book is definitely in the realm of YA, but content is targeted for an older YA demographic. There is drinking, sex (although nothing explicit), some bullying and mild violence.
The premise surrounds the arrival of a new vampire to a small school for supernaturals. The setting is the rugged mountains of Scotland and it seems to take place in present day. I enjoyed the trials and tribulations of Alexander, a vampire recently transformed. The vampire politics are kind of fascinating but the storyline as a whole was only mediocre. It ends with a pretty abrupt cliffhanger, which is annoying to some. I don’t mind that so much, but I know others find it to be a turn off.
Overall, 2 stars. ⭐️⭐️ -
I have loved previous books by this author that I've read but this one for me was just missing something...
It is the first in a series and follows the story of Alexander Augustine, a newly emerging vampire, and Scarlet Bathory who is vampire royalty. I personally found that reading the book I felt as confused by it all as Alexander is. There is a lot of terminoly like vampeers, swans, otherkin etc who identify with vampires and the such but aren't one... then you have the monarchs who are actual vampires like Alexander and Scarlet. There are lots of characters on all manner of the categories and it takes a little getting your head round remembering who is who.
I love the whole vampire fantasy supernatural stuff but I just struggled with this book it didn't grip me like the author's other books and just found that the story took a while to get going. I appreciate it is the first in the series so needs to be a build up to more to come but just left me feeling a little disappointed. -
I tried out this book not sure what to think but I don't think it's for me. I struggle to get through any academy type books lately I just don't find them as attention grabbing as they first were. I also didn't connect with the MC Alexander. While this one just wasn't for me I always think if the blurb sparks an in you but you arnt sure give the first chapter or two a shot.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I am not sure how I feel about Alexander. We don't really get a lot of his background story. All we really know is that he is a vampire that was raised in the human world and he almost killed a girl. His grandfather takes him to the academy so he can embraces his life and his nature. He is trying to settle into his new supernatural life. I enjoy the book and would read more by this author.

When I can get my hands on a book that has some history or folk lore weaved thru it makes it so much better for me to read and really get into the story. I dont really read many books with young adults in them but I am glad that the word vampire and Bathory grabbed me first. I would love to read more in this series,.

Capitivating
It has been years since I enjoyed a vampire story and Katie M. John has rekindled my love.
I couldn't stop reading once I'd started and I can't wait to start book two.
The balance of darkness, humour and angst is perfect and the intricate characters against the stunning Scottish setting is amazing. -
Very enjoyable
I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters feel well thought out.
The story kept me turning page after page and the characters pulled me into their world with them. It was nice to learn about the vampire world along with the main character -
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to everyone.

“There was no such thing as leniency or mercy, and imprisoning a vampire was a hard task. It was simple, follow the code of The Court or die.”

1.5🌟/5
I received this e-book from Netgalley.
Alexander Augustine is a monarch (new to the vampire world and the ways of the Old Court), who begins his new life at “Bathory Academy”, where he encounters Scarlett Bathory, other monarchs, vampeers and otherkins. Throughout the book, we realise what could have led Alexander to come to the academy in the first place and what his purpose in the future could be.
There were some typos and grammar mistakes, however this was not the main problem. The book had a lack of action and mystery, I felt the story was dragged more than it should have been, as most scenes were repeated and unfortunately it felt more of a draft than a published book. -

Let me start out that I hate cliff hangers!!!! If I knew this was a first in series I would not have chosen for that reason. I enjoyed the story and the depth some of the characters had but not all we're fully developed. Some seemed to hide great chunks of themselves in this book. Just when I was really getting into it the book ended. Now I have to wait for the next one.
-
This was a tough one for me. I hate giving 1 star rating but there's just no way around it for Vampire Hearts. There were enough grammer issues and typos to pull me away from the story itself. The premise was great and the book sounded interesting from the blurb but it was just poorly executed. And lastly, I just couldn't bring myself to care about these characters. After trying to get through this book, I DNF at 46%

Alexander went through the door of Bathory Academy. His grandfather had brought him here. He really had nowhere else to go after what happened with the young girl. He was determined to take ownership of his life. To embrace and accept who he really was even after being brought up in the human world he is a vampire. Then he heard someone beautifully playing the piano and singing like a siren. Even though he knew he should take a seat to await his appointment with the headmistress, he moved until he came to the door of the room he knew help the siren. She looked like some long forgotten Grecian goddess. Than his name was called and he followed the woman. She sat behind her desk and instructed him to sit. She welcomed him and said her name was Josephine De’Arth and she was the Head of the Academy. Bathory Academy was a monsterous turrented castle and in a very remote area. Then she said he would be given a tour of the Academy after they were done talking. Madam De’Arth apologized for going on as she wasn’t used to students with such a poor understanding of their unique status. They didn’t have much experience with inter generationals. Alexander already felt like an outsider who had stumbled into some strange dream. Knowing he was about to walk further in the dream,or what he might find, was making him nervous. Madam De’Arth said he would soon see, it was difficult to comprehend until he knew how this world really works. Alexander was starting to think maybe the decision to come to Bathony’s was a mistake. As much as he didn’t belong at home. He couldn’t see himself belonging here. Alexander knew getting blood was a necessary part of his species make-up, and without it bad things happened. Terrible things happened. He forced the memories aside. He promised himself this was a new start. Madam De’Arth knew his secret, and had promised to protect him and keep him safe. The rest of the academy was made up of approximately a hundred students- besides the vampires- vampeers - those who identify as vampires, or otherkin- those who identify themselves with other supernatural beings. They are sons and daughters of the night, they all have extraordinary creative, technological, scientific or sporting talents: empaths, artists, poets, alchemists, athletes, creatives- those who are beyond the boundaries and limitations of being human. Twelve months ago he would have laughed away this as talk of a man man . but not after what happened to Lydia. Alexander asked if he would be taught what he needed to know. He wasn’t sure he was ready for that kind of education. Bathory Academy is a safe place for him to explore his true nature said madam De’Arth. Alexander was eighteen now, at fourteen his transformation had started. Three fourths of his timetable would be a core curriculum. For vampires there was some additional classes added. Alexander met the beautiful musician she was to give him his tour. Her name was Scarlet. Alexander suddenly believed in love at first sight. Scarlet was seventeen nearly eighteen and had been a student at barthony Academy for almost two years. Bua the Academy had been her home as long as Scarlet could remember. She had grown up in the castle but in a different wing than the other students. Scarlet was dating Byron. She had tried to convince herself dating him was wrong but there was something about Byron that sang to her darker side. Scarlet still had Alexander on the outskirts of her mind but told Byron she was hungry and that is why she seem detached. He had true blue blood that was very expensive form actual aristocrats and wasn’t that nasty stuff from the blood bank down in the infirmary. Scarlet would not take swans which went against the natural order of things she begged Byron to give up his swans but he refused. Barthony Academy has been home to some of the most notorious vampire families in the world. Alexander decided deep down Scarlet liked him.
I liked this book. I would have liked to know more of Alexander’s past when he was brought up with humans and when he started to transform. I liked the pace and plot a lot. I liked the action and mystery involved but would have liked just a little more. My biggest complaint was this ended in a cliffhanger and I hate those. I didn’t want to put this down but was very annoyed when this ended in that cliffhanger. It had caught my attention right away but once again the ending …. I also didn’t really care for the instalove. I usually don’t. I felt like Alexanders feelings of not belonging fit this book perfectly. I liked the characters but had mixed feelings about this book.
