The Story Of Lee's Headquarters, Gettysburg, Pa Reviews
-
This little book describes the origins of the Thompson House and Thompson family in detail, then goes on to describe the battle as being fought in the house's back- and front-yard and the remainder of the little book is spend with the controversy if it was or was not general Lee's headquarters during the three days of the battle.
While the part of the battle being fought around the house, the artillery battery fighting on its ground and the subseqeunt rout and capture of the entire Union line of defence on Seminary Ridge, is very well described, the other parts of the books are not. Thus, the part about july 1st might learn you something new while the remainder of the book sums up the few facts about the quest: "Was it, or was it not Lee's HQ?", and does a little speculation. Three stars for the July 1st part, two+ for the first third of the book and 2- for the last third. -
I've visited the Gettysburg area many times, but had only heard the short version of the history of this building. Timothy Smith does a wonderful job of presented all of the known facts as well as the myths and legends.

Interesting little book. I wasn't aware of the controversy about the actual location of Lee's headquarters at Gettysburg. The footnotes were fascinating.
