I'm very confused as to why this says 'expected release date 2019' when I bought it in a bookshop and have finished it?
Anyway, I don't really know what to say.
    A) it served its purpose as in I read 1 to 2 stories per night before going to sleep and definitely slept well afterwards.
    B) there is a wide variety of story excerpts, short stories and poems in this. Some I'd read before, some I didn't know.
    C) I loved some stories. Others I didn't particularly care for. Others I'm not sure I even truly understood. Mostly because they were excerpts of bigger stories that made no sense without the context (which was fine for the ones where I actually knew the whole story, but not for the ones that were unknown to me).
    D) I can only give this 3 stars because well I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I enjoyed some of the stories but not all, so I feel like 3 stars is pretty fair.

Life is stressful. Read a book. Read all the books. Now.

I absolutely loved the idea behind this book. It had a beautiful cover and beautiful intentions, with such a great sounding title and premise, but just didn’t quite deliver in the way I wanted it to. I really did love the time I spent reading this just before bed, tucked up with a cup of herbal tea, and the fact that it meant I set intentions with my reading to only read it when I knew I’d fully enjoy the time, in the way it was intended.

However, the stories themselves were very hit and miss, with notable favourites coming from only 6 of the 33 entries. I really did enjoy Wynken, Blynken and Nod, The Mouse, and From ‘Amanda’, to name a few, but I lost track of just how many it felt like a huge slog to get through. Normally this wouldn’t bother me too much, but given that this was a book intended for bedtime reading and de-stressing, it felt a little misaligned.

Maybe I’m just not smart enough to understand what half the authors were meaning in their writing, but so many of the stories took crazy amounts of focus from me just to understand what was going on, with unnecessarily complicated and long descriptions. This also wasn’t helped by a number being excerpts from other, longer stories, making them even harder to follow as you’re just thrown in without context, especially for those which I hadn’t read in full previously.

Overall, it’s not an awful collection by any stretch, but it could’ve done with some refining and alterations to really suit its purpose. I’ll probably revisit some of the stories, but many will be forgotten too unfortunately.

The Selfish Giant - Oscar Wilde
A Portrait - Guy de Maupassant
The Golden Windows - Laura E. Richards
    The Beauties - Anton Chekhov
    Three Questions - Leo Tolstoy
    Xingu - Edith Wharton

Lawrence

    „Peste coline
    E acum pace,
    În toți copacii
    Nu se aude
    Nicio suflare;
    Păsările dorm în copac:
    Așteaptă, ca ele
    Curând vei adormi.„ - Goethe

I have trouble sleeping and loved the idea of a book of pleasant short stories to help me get to sleep. Unfortunately, the lack of editing in this book just stressed me out. The book desperately needs a copyeditor. It has an incredible number of punctuation and spacing errors, especially missing commas and periods. There are some glaring misspellings and spacing issues as well. By page 17, I had found 2 missing periods, 5 missing commas, 1 misspelling, and 2 spacing errors. There were also some sentences that were just so awkwardly worded (e.g., "You will almost probably ...") that I wondered if English was not the author's first language. Anyway, the concept of this book was good, but definitely save your money and find a different book of short stories!

An eclectic mix of excerpts from some of our well loved classics, short stories and a bit of poetry to round it out. I enjoyed revisiting some of the classics and enjoyed some of the short stories and poetry but if it wasn’t for my complete obstinance about not finishing this book I’m afraid I would’ve given it up a third of the way in.

  • Joshie

This was a cute book, mainly a combination of excerpts from existing literary works. It was a pleasure to read and stirred up some real nostalgia, as I'd read a lot of these stories as a child. It felt kind of like catching a glimpse of an old friend's life through your Facebook feed.

Extra stars for the exclusive audio.

  • Daniel

When I came across this book in the bookshop - the first visit I was able to make in months (if not years) - I just thought "Yes! This is the perfect book for me"
The premise is perfect, the cover beautiful.
But the stories themselves are spotty. I didn't enjoy all of them. And the poems, frankly, I don't get (I'm not into poetry much. Mary Oliver and that's about it.)
What I did learn from this book is that the books I love are the epic fantasy types, that really pull me into a large story. And also that I don't have time or energy for those books, and anything else is not as satisfying. It's opening up a larger issue - how to make time for reading the books that make me happy? Because, let me tell you, it's not as much fun when there's a little child nagging in your ear whenever I pick up a book, and by the time they're in bed I'm too exhausted.
    *sigh*

    4.5/5 🌟

bedtime stories for stressed out adults is basically a collection a short stories and poems written by classic authors, collected together in one book, and introduced by lucy mangan. you will also find some experts, written so well by mangan, all stories with one goal and that is to provide consoling stories.

I wish I could say I devoured this book, but no, it devoured ME. I first started this book back in September, and I made it a mission to only pick it before sleep and at first I stuck to that deal with myself. Reading stories like “the gift of the magi” by o. henry and “the golden windows” by laura e. richards before going to bed felt so satisfying. I honestly found myself smiling widely by the end of each story, thinking “wow” because honestly that's the only word to describe them. the stories just gave me a sense of peace if that makea sense and mainly that's my favorite thing about this. sure, I would get confused before I arrive to the end of each story but that made it all the whole better!! I would be like “ohhhhhh” with realization. and sometimes I even laughed because “wow, I didn't see that coming ” or “woah, that's clever.” !!

now, yes, this took me a while to finish. I finished it about a month ago, and that's why I'm saying it devoured me. even tho it took me such a long time to finish, I honestly never felt pressured that I'm not finishing it as quickly as I normally finish a book, and I liked that I just read on with a smile on my face and not wanting it to end! But as I said, I only stuck to that read it before bed deal at first. When I finished it a month ago, I was constantly reading it night and day, still taking my time with it but not before bed. I feel like it would have been nicer if I still went along with that deal but it still felt good. The stories weren't labeled as bedtime stories when they were first written, so it definitely doesn't hurt if you read it whenever!! They just give you a sense of peace so I recommend reading it before bed but not necessarily tbh.

now moving to why I this wasn't a complete five stars read for me, I gave it 4.5/5 stars because well, some stories confused me until I got to the ending and I was yes that makes sense and wow. But some stories just confused me, period, and I didn't understand what the point was aside from peaceful setting that conjured nice images in my head. It was cute but I didn't get it?? I have to understand the concept of the story, and the moral if there's any.
And I would just like to point out that this issue is just me, and completely me. English isn't my native language and I get the sense that if a native English speaker read it would understand perfectly fine; as I went through some reviews after finishing the book and I get the sense that some people gave it one and two stars because they didn't understand a thing?? I mean it's confusing a little but if you understand English then there's no problem with that, it's just classic, and classic authors and books are somewhat confusing to someone who's not very good at the language and I say this from experience because I don't read that much classic because I don't often get the hang of it so there's that! This is pure classic, from the short stories to the poems, and even the experts were written in a similar way.

so other than that, I loved this so, so much. It was cute, it was consoling and it's a new fav and I honestly can't wait for a quick reread in the future. It was just so good and I definitely recommend! Just, if you're into short cute with morals type of stories, with consoling bedtime kinda poems, all classic, written by classic authors like Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, Saki and William Wordsworth then this is definitely for you!! xx

Popsugar 2020 Reading Challenge: an anthology
    ----------------------

This ended up being kind of a mixed bag. The narrators were lovely, as were some of selections: classic poetry, short stories, and excerpts from cozy nostalgic reads like The Secret Garden, The Wind in the Willows, etc. I wasn't listening to these to fall asleep, but rather to relax, and these particular stories were very relaxing indeed.

Unfortunately, others were boring as tar and I found myself passing out from pure boredom. Still, these are marketed as bedtime stories, so I suppose these tales were doing what they were supposed to.

  • Julian Walker

Lucy Mangan has collated a fabulous and varied selection of short stories, poems, and story excerpts, all of which vividly conjure up pleasant times - and for me, many childhood memories from when I first read the pieces included in this anthology.

This collection also introduced me to some new writers and poets, which will form part of my reading wish list going forwards.

And, although I don't consider myself to be specifically stressed out about anything, I can thoroughly recommend this book, based on the calming influence I experienced on my journey through so many imaginative worlds, having dived into this tremendously warm pot-pourri of creativity.

    A must read.
