Plimer has blotted his copy book recently by coming out as a greenhouse sceptic – but on his own ground here he is masterful. The Creationists have a favourite ploy – it is coming up with a scientific fact that is obscure and hard to understand – the quantity of neutrinos coming from the sun, for example, for a long time was thought to be less than the standard theory predicted – and Creationists would allude to this sort of thing as if it proved Creation Science. This would then cause enough confusion for the scientists answering them to sound overly complex and contradictory.

Plimer not only gives creationists a bit of a kicking for the absurdities of their ideas – showing why ideas like their changing the speed of light over time would not save their young universe ideas (a brilliant example showing E=mc2 has dire implications for such a change – even to the sex life of Adam and Eve – his line about the big bang in this context still makes me smile).

His discussion of the problems associated with a handful of people caring for all of the animals on Noah’s ark, of the amount of shit produced alone, of the problems of animals getting from Turkey to their native environments – is very funny and quite illuminating.

Plimer believes the best form of defence is attack. He shows the Creationists to be duplicitous, liars and conmen who take money from their ‘followers’ under what they know to be false pretences. If anyone else was doing what Creationists do they would be put in gaol, but because these people are ‘religious’ and say they are ‘hunting for the true ark’ they can get away with telling any lies they like (which Plimer proves conclusively they know they are doing) and that’s just fine.

This book is one of the classics of its kind – it reminds one of what is at stake.

There is even an introduction by Archbishop Hollingworth, who also blotted his copy book when he became Governor General – but if only more Archbishops would come out against ‘Christian Schools’ set up to teach ‘Creation Science’ the world would be a much better place. Top stuff.
