Four points for the stellar translation and textual notes. There really is nothing like the NET Bible. Every single translation or wording decision is explained and justified, often with references to secondary sources so you can do more research if you want to. I am so glad this resource exists, and it’s fun that a lot of it was coordinated right here in good old Dallas, Texas.

I would give it five points if I could be more happy with the translation. I understand different translation philosophies, but so often the “equivalence” folks seem to have the philosophy “use any word except for the one that Tyndale/KJV/ESV have made popular.”

Even so, this has been a useful resource for years, and it will remain so for my lifetime. I just now finished reading the whole thing through, hence the review. Protip: buy the notes in your favorite electronic Bible. You’ll want them nearby.

The BEST bible for me in all my collection of reference and study bibles, with incisive notes drilling down on translation from the Hebrew & Greek... NET is remarkably literal a translation, and sparse, the notes aside, but in modern clear sonorous tones. The sort of erudite crowd-sourcing translation approach and broad vision is so fresh too. NET seems more rigourous & definitive than the KJV or even the NRSV, with better translation notes than the stately New Oxford Annotated Bible NRSV for instance. This is often challenging more traditional phrasing but also hammers home long cherished words too. It is not a study bible, only a wealth of discussion about translation elements, and it might be complimentary to commentaries and study notes. The nice leather volume is soft, compact and satisfying to hold. The formatting effect of the notes on the actual bible text is delightful.... Some pages have only a couple of verses! A bundle of joy. Totally unique.

I cannot rate or review the Bible. It rates and reviews me daily.

However, this particular translation and edition was wonderful. I normally read ESV and still prefer it as a general rule, but reading the NET with full translation notes was very beneficial in helping me pay more attention to individual word choices and helping me understand a little more of the original languages.

Read in traditional order (straight through) in 2020.
