STORIES OF PERTH Reviews

Started beautiful, went downhill fast, finished on methheads and jail. I could have done with a little less bleakness, but the stories were largely well-written and engaging. I loved the way it highlighted Perth's multicultural nature (and its underlying structural racism). Worth it for the first story alone.

There are a real variety of voices in this short story collection with personal stories strongly set in suburban Perth. It feels very real, and overall is a delightful easy read.
There were two strongly set in Maylands, which told such very lonely stories of being newcomers. I was particularly touched by the loneliness and poetry of Yirga Gelaw Woldeyes' In Search of the Kole.
Completely different was the very funny anti-nanny state rampage of Matthew Chrulew's Local Police Are Now Targetting Us. And very powerful, the pain of miscarriage in Rebecca Higgie's And Then, the Fish, It Died as she explores her new city of Perth by public transport.
Buy it from Rabble, in Maylands :) -
Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, is a vibrant, energetic city whose claims to fame includes picture-perfect beaches, exotic wineries and expansive parklands. This book is very interesting... Everything written in this entire book will hit you hard if you are from Perth. Follow this blog to get the latest updates from Perth.

An eclectic group of stories from the city in which I live. Some are real and some are imagined but all stem from the life experiences of their authors. Some sad, some life affirming but all are worth a read.

My favorite were “Split” and “In Search of the Kole”. I’m quite biased but I’m sure you will enjoy it too if you love a mix of nature and spirituality in your reads.

An interesting read - some stories better than others. In Search of the Kole in particular was a thing of beauty.

A great mix of voices. Some beautiful stories. Some important stories. A few I didn't think fit or belonged.

Stories of Perth is a fantastic collection of aspects of real life in the isolated West Australian capital city. So many of these stories are immediately relatable to those who have lived in Perth. Some stories - like those by Cassie Lynch and Robert Wood - focus on place and the author's sense of where they belong within those places and cultures. Other stories like "Local Police Are Now Targeting Us" by Matthew Chrulew and "Tales from Meth City" by Scott-Patrick Mitchell delve into the seedier underbelly of this coastal capital teeming with the social problems wrought by those buoyed by the early 2000s mining boom and those left behind. Some particular favourites from this collection are "Zap!" by Guy Salvidge - a very funny and acidly witty look at life as a suburban high school teacher - and the tender and poetic "Intimacies" by Maddie Godfrey, which explores a lesbian first date with gentleness, humour and wonderful insight.
