The Old Witch Gets a Surprise Reviews
-
When the Old Witch of the Hill receives a letter from her friend the Wizard, promising her a surprise if she visits him at his castle, she grabs her broomstick and immediately sets out to learn more. Discovering that he has constructed a majestic dragon hot-air balloon, she agrees to go for a flight, surreptitiously bringing her broomstick along just in case. Her forethought is rewarded when disaster strikes, and Old Witch and Wizard must abandon ship, midway through their flight...
Wizard, who first appeared in the seventh entry in Ida DeLage's series,
The Old Witch and the Wizard, returns in this thirteenth installment, which also references that earlier adventure in one of the later scenes, in which the two companions take shelter in Witch's cave, and Wizard thinks he will finally learn the secret of her magical brew. The artwork here is done by Ellen Sloan, who also worked on
The Old Witch and Her Magic Basket - this is the first time that I've seen the same artist twice, in this series! - and has a vintage, cartoon-like quality that suits the story. All in all, I would say that The Old Witch Gets a Surprise is an engaging little book, somewhat old-fashioned in style, but still appealing for those who enjoy witchy stories. -
This is a cute book. I think that this would be a cute book to read near Halloween.
