This book was in the library of the cruise ship we were just on. I’ve always wanted to know more about the chapter of India in the history of Great Britain. This was very well done, well written enough to hold my interest, and not too long. Lots of names to try and remember. Lots of references over to Wikipedia to look up the parties involved.
India had been trading partners with the various European companies for over 100 years. A perceived weakness in the top Indian leader leadership led to an situation where Great Britain determined to go from trading partner to overlord for the next 120 some odd years until independence and separation. -
A detailed examination of the sociopolitical context, personalities, bureaucratic structures that led to the English East India Company to change from a business entity in India to a key political actor. While the text shows the zeitgeist of its authorship, it is moreover a reasonable insight into this part of Indian and British history with fewer biases than I had expected, given the age of the text. Anyone who is curious about the details of the political integration of South Asia into the western sphere of influence should examine this book.
