Coming Home to Country Reviews

  • Shane

A gorgeously illustrated picture book that evokes the feeling and comfort of returning home and especially the connection indigenous people feel with their land.

  • Jenny Esots

Lyrical, poetic story about the world that surrounds us.
    Bright (too bright?) illustrations.
This story rings especially true in COVID times as we are confined to base and have a renewed appreciation of our our country.

It might seem like a strange choice for 'A Story That's Over 100 Years Old', but this story is one of Australia's oldest stories.โ €
    โ €
The narrative might be new, the beautifully poetic words of Bancroft might be new, the stunning illustrations might be new, but The First Australians have been coming home to Country for over 65, 000 years. โ €

This is so much more than a picture book. It's a work of art. โ €

Definitely add this one to your book collections โ˜€๏ธโ €

Bundjalung woman Bronwyn Bancroft has written and/or illustrated over 40 books for children. The first-person narrative in Coming Home to Country reveals something of Bancroftโ€™s understanding of time and continuity and history: โ€˜I sleep across dreams of generations past, woven with journeys for the future.โ€™

Bancroftโ€™s illustrations are bold and bright, echoing her vivid text: โ€˜I ease into a palette of leaf green, red rust, yellow ochre, deep blue and crimson and walk with our people.โ€™

This story is as much a first nation story as it is a story of mindfulness, an opportunity to enjoy our connection with Country.
The words allow your imagination to conjure the sights and sounds of the landscape.
I was taken by the artwork, the vivid colour use give both a sense of the colour of the bush and feelings of warmth, calm,
    peace and movement.
I cannot wait to show this to my art teacher friend as I can see the students creating beautiful bold scapes - maybe even to coincide with NAIDOC week.
    An enjoyable read.

Our March selection for kids is a colourful celebration of Australia, the ancient and beautiful land we call home. We thought it would be special to choose a book that was all about connecting with our land given that it has been through so much lately. There are not many words in this book, itโ€™s the brilliant illustrations that really tell the story. From one of the legends of Australian picture books, Bronwyn Bancroft.

This book is gorgeous! Wonderful both in its storyline and in the universal message of love and kindness. Read and reread many times a month since earlier this year when we bought it, and cherished more with every reading. This book should be in every library and curriculum, up to grades three or four. The artwork is amazing, appealing to readers of any age. A treasure!

  • Sue

A description of connection to country for a First Nation Australian person that is a help for second nations understanding of the link between ancestors, land, culture and language. Evocative of other experiences of spiritual home and why for other peoples. Magnificent illustrations that depict connections on various levels

  • Tina

Beautifully illustrated by Bronwyn Bancroft, in her distinctive style, this is the story of a return to country. Her connection with country is evident and strong. The illustration of the storm was absolutely spectacular. This is a beautiful way to explain country to young readers.

  • Karen Dransfield

The artwork drew me to this book. Bright bold colours in aborigine styled paintings tell the story of coming home to the country. Lovely artwork.
