In a future where powerful factions control the wormholes - the highways of the universe - a guild of highly skilled mercenaries work for the highest bidder. Hannibal Reece was pressed into their service as a child and, though jaded by the corruption he's witnessed, accepts that he will live and die by their way. No one leaves the Guild.

But then he encounters Kira Dresden, a tough-as-nails independent transporter. As their relationship deepens, he begins to question his future. And when the Guild orders him to kill her, he knows he can't obey. Furthermore, they wind up tangled in a deal that could upend the fate of the galaxy.

A gritty, action-packed space thriller, Paige Daniels' novella "In the Service of the Guild" is just the read for anyone who misses Firefly. With colorful, smart-mouthed characters and written in a relatable, straight-talking voice, this story is easy to fall into. And the chemistry between Hannibal and Kira is phenomenal - palpable from the start and deepening with every page. Seriously, this is the best space couple since Han and Leia.

With its fascinating world-building and plot twists (which offer glimpses at deeper conspiracies), this book is a quick, fast-paced read that leaves you wanting more. Which is just as well, because it sets up the first full-length novel in the Singularity Wars series, PROJECT ELEUTERIA. But if you don't like series starters, don't worry. This story has a complete ending and can be read as a standalone (but you'll want more... trust me ;-) )
