A killer is watching…

Thirteen years ago, Winter Black came home early from a sleepover to find her parents brutally murdered and her little brother gone—taken by a serial killer called The Preacher.

Now a rookie FBI agent assigned to her first murder case, Winter has returned to the small Virginia town where she grew up. But when bones found by a hunter lead to the discovery of a secret burial ground containing the remains of children, the investigation suddenly hits close to home as the past and future collide with each new shocking discovery. Will they find her brother’s bones in the makeshift graveyard next?

Only The Preacher knows, and he’ll do anything to keep the past—and its secrets—buried until he’s ready to make his final move.

Winter Black is a rookie FBI agent investigating her first murder case. However, she has a hidden agenda. As a 13-year old, she was the only survivor when her family was viciously murdered. Waking from the coma which was the result from a crushing blow to the head from the murderer, she has a new ability that she did not have before the attack. She has no control over it, but has been successfully using it in her few previous cases. However, this murder case brings her back to the hometown where she lost her family and memories come flooding back. Can she focus her attention on the murder case at hand while dealing with the loss of her family and the memories they stir?

I stumbled upon this book and am so happy I did. It came as a complete surprise. It is an outstanding murder/mystery story. In addition, I have now found a new author! A win-win all the way around. Onto the next book in the series, "Winter's Curse." ;)

    Good book, interesting characters

I liked this book and eventually grew to like Winters. Like many other books in this genre the main character is tragically flawed with some sort of revenge needed to come to terms with the past. I did like the twist in her capabilities and liked the secondary characters as well even though they are rather stereotypical. I hope future books won’t bring out crime-ance, making the main character romantically involved with her partner. I hate crime romance and hope this series doesn’t flail in that. Enjoyed the book, enjoyed the twists and will continue on.

    3.5 rounded up...

The primary case is solved but there is an unsolved cold case that goes into at least one more book.

It definitely kept me Kindling, despite my crap vision. Loved the suspense in this FBI thriller (and the slight tough of paranormal.) The next book is already on my TBR list.

  • Marge

Actually 3.5 stars. With all the hype and press I’ve seen about this book, I was a bit disappointed. Pretty much an average mystery read.

  • Burk

This book isn't really even worth reviewing. Trite plot, shallow character development, formula writing (out of control female law enforcement officer whose male counterparts are all enamoured with her despite her over-the-top self-absorption, insubordination and self-perceived discrimination because she is a woman in a man's world.) Would probably be a hit "mindless" TV series, but a bust of a read.

  • Jackie

A very interesting story I enjoyed it a lot

  • Judy Odom

Winter's Mourn had me turning the pages quickly , staying up late to finish Book 1 in the series and can't wait to read Book 2.

I am excited for the rest of the series.

  • Liz

Suspense with splash of sexual tension

  • Brenda Marie

Excellent start to the series. A strong, independent FBI agent returns to her hometown after bones are found in the woods. Winter hasn't returned since the horrendous murder of her parents and the kidnapping of her brother.
With her partner, Winter uncovers other remains. They struggle to piece together the history of the town as well as a commune.
Fast paced. Excellent intro to the characters.

  • Teresa

    Bought books 1-4.
This one is not very good. The writing style is juvenile and Winter, the main character is totally unlikeable

  • Janice Somers

I couldn't put it down. The story was a cliffhanger and I hate that, but I couldn't stop reading. What will happen to Winter and her little brother? Will they catch the killer/kidnapper?
The story had some language flaws, but compared to real-life it was nothing to complain about.
The story was one that held me to the end.

    3.5 Sterne

I had really high hopes for this book. I kept seeing it online along with some great thrillers.

What went through my mind while listening to the audiobook was “Did all the people who talked about this book actually read it????”

So it’s either that the narrator doesn’t make any appropriate pauses or the author wrote the novel in a stream of consciousness rambling. I listened to the audiobook so the print version may be better. The bones of the story isn’t bad, it just reads like one long run-on sentence after another. There’s also a lot of “she felt” and “he felt” instead of letting it come across in the story.

I may try another in the series in print to see if it’s any better.
    Be warned…

    ⭐MY REVIEW⭐
After starting 26 books I found one that caught my attention. This is my first book by Mary Stone and WOW what an amazing very well written story. I loved it so much that i honestly never wanted it to end.

I just love it when I find a new to me author and they have a wonderful series that I get hooked on. Winter's Mourn is book 1 in the Winter Black Series. It
had me gripped from the first page and held my interest all the way through. Stones writing style draws the reader in within the first few lines. This was an amazing 5 star read and I never knew where it would go next. It was one of those books that you want to end and yet you want it to go on forever because you fall in love with the characters. The plot was suspenseful and thrilling at all times. It really is a roller coaster of a ride.

I was truly hooked until I got to the very end. And what an ending it was !!! Talk about ending with a bang. You will feel as if you've stepped into the characters shoes.
It's most definitely a book you will not want to miss. Just be warned you won't be able to put it down once you start ! Definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.

This was an okay mystery - first in a series. I would probably read the next one. In many ways it's like a lot of other mysteries out there -female FBI agent joins the FBI due to past trauma (in this case her parents were murdered and brother kidnapped - killer never caught).

She is being 'stalked' by the killer while working a different case - this story ends and her family's killer leaves her another taunting note -implying that this cat and mouse game will continue. I am tired/bored of books with a bad guy who never caught; or not caught until 7-8-9 books later. If that is the case with this series I won't stick with it. This story also reminded me a bit of the Kay Hooper - Bishop series as Winter has some sort of psychic abilities since her parent's murder (she was attacked by the murder and in a coma for awhile -emerged with super powers).

overall and easy read - but nothing special -

    3.25 ⭐️

So this is the first book in a mystery/thriller series with an FBI agent who has some psychic abilities. I really though that part was cool and the FMC has a strong personality but at times I found her to be a little annoying.

I think the mystery aspect was decent but I have to say I was just cringing with the victims and it did freak me out a bit.

There was one comment in the book that I cannot get out of my head and was like say what there was a character who was hugging her husband and thought to herself that she was disgusted because he’s gained a couple points and that was just weird. It didn’t add to the character at all outside of making me not care for them lol and they were someone we needed to care about by the end. A part of me is slightly intrigued though to read another in the series. ———CW below ————-

This is the first book in a series featuring Rookie FBI agent Winter Black. I thought it was a solid mystery. I enjoyed the main character, Winter. She came across as a realistic survivor if trauma. While there is a mystery in the book that is solved, there seems to be a story arch that will continue in later books. A serial killer is following Winter and leaving her messages. I am looking forward to the next in the series.

NOTHING IN THAT TOWN IS COPACETIC AT ALL. I WAS HAPPY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS REALLY GOING ON, LOTS OF WEIRD STUFF GOES ON IN HARRISONBURG. I WOULD NOT WANT TO VISIT OR JUST DRIVE THRU THAT TOWN. WINTER IS CHASING HER OWN VERSION OF THE ONE ARM MAN AND THIS IS BK#1 AND THERE ARE 8 BOOKS SO FAR. I GUESS SHE WILL HAVE HIM CAPTURED OR DEAD. GOOD STORY LINE I ENJOYED IT. ;D

A decent read. The fast pace kept me interested, although I was squirming about the fertility drugs and all the awful side effects. I'm not in love with the potential relationship triangle but interested to see where it will go.

I'm hoping for mostly thrills and not too many smooches!!

Gripping story that kept me up at night flipping the pages. Happy days.
