    4/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

If you're looking for a quick read that is vaguely reminiscent of Creepshow, chilling- without being overly graphic, and somehow nostalgic, I highly suggest adding this one to your TBR's!

Every season is creepy season in my house, so when Sean reached out to see if I would be interested in reading his latest, I couldn't resist- I had to add this one to my collection immediately!

When fortune introduces Jimmy to Rozelda, nothing will ever be the same again.

Wow! Let me first start off with I had never hear of @sean.t.fisher until he reached out to me with a Gifted copy of Death Fortune and boy am I so glad he did! I can not wait to check out more of his work!

This book is a little guy coming in at 162 pages but it did what it came here to do! I've seen other reviewers say this is like Goosebumps but grownup and I stand by that as well. This book has a creepy paranormal plot with a super cool legend that relates to the happenings (which I love a good flashback story/legend/wives tale moment in horror). This book gave me some weird dreams and I love when books can do that for me. Although though this book is creepy and eerie, it's never down right scary which makes this book perfect for some who is new to the horror genre and just wants to dip their toes a bit or someone like me who reads a lot of horror and just needs something kinda nostalgic (due to the Goosebumps vibes) or just and over easy to read fun palette cleanser!

At the end of this book there is a COMING SOON page with some upcoming releases and I have to say I can't wait to check out Cold Summer Nights!😁

Like taking a trip to The Twilight Zone

I was pleasantly surprised by this little story. Great pacing, likable and realistic characters, and peppered with creepiness throughout. I read this in one sitting and not just because it was a novella. It was just that good.
I won't put any spoilers but will simply say that the story revolves around a cursed fortune telling box and the events that unfold are eventually explained with an interesting back story.
I definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to take a quick trip into the dark side and look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

*3.5 / 5.0* - Fisher is a new author to me; prior to his contacting me for this review consideration, I had never heard of him, nor had I ever seen his work promoted by the reviewers I trust and follow. This meant I went into Death Fortune with zero expectations.

Though it is an adult novella, it honestly brought Goosebumps to mind throughout. I also saw another reader comment on a Creepshow influence, which I can also see. I think this is mostly due to its length and synopsis. You have two brothers that trade an inherited storage unit of junk for one of mystery. Inside, they find an amazing fortune telling booth named Rozelda. Of course, she’s cursed! Jimmy - the brother that chose to keep the machine for the bar he’s trying to open - now must deal with the death Rozelda brings, and figure out a way to stop it before his girlfriend is claimed next.

I’m not much for the setup, but I actually enjoyed Death Fortune quite a bit. It wasn’t until the last fifteen or twenty percent of this story that I lost some interest. Up until that point, I found the pacing and suspense top notch. Again, this reads like an adult version of Goosebumps, so if you grew up on that series like I did, you may get some nostalgic vibes from this novella. In fact, that might be part of the reason I enjoyed it so much. Nothing wrong with that!

I will say some of the dialogue seemed overly excited - there are a lot of exclamation points through this story, is what I mean - and the flashback sequence near the end actually pulled me out of the story, rather than enhance it. I also could not stand Jimmy’s ex-wife - conversations with her actually irritated me deeply. I also found the whole story with her and the boyfriend somehow taking half of Jimmy’s inheritance - despite the fact that she had committed adultery to end their marriage - struck me as a little unbelievable. I know weird things come from divorces, but this one just didn’t strike me as a realistic threat. If Jimmy got himself a lawyer, I would imagine they’d win the case rather easily.

Complaints aside, I enjoyed Death Fortune enough that I have already downloaded several other stories by Fisher to see what else he has to offer. Again, if series like Goosebumps, Fear Street, or Creepshow ring your bell, I definitely recommend this quick and satisfying read.

Fortune favors the bold....will it favor you?

Death Fortune is a dark, twisted and fast paced supernatural horror story with a small cast of characters and a tight timeline. Rozelda was creepy, wicked and she outright gave me chills. Death Fortune is definitely a book that continuously kept me on the edge of my seat and one I didn’t expect to spook me out (as much). I enjoyed the fact that we got to see a bit of Rozelda’s dark past, I do wish the book was longer! It was so fun.

I was sent a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I received this from the author in exchange for an honest review. Death Fortune is a pleasant surprise. It starts with Jimmy inheriting a packed storage unit from his dead aunt. There is an auctioneer that meets them because he is to sell the unit next to them. In a lucky bet, which might have been a little bit of unethical business practices on the part of the auctioneer, they trade their junk filled aunt’s unit for the unknown in the unit next door. The unknown is a fortune telling machine, with a “beautiful woman inside the box” named Rozelda. The mystery and horror commences as Jimmy takes it back to his house, thinking he is going to add to his bar when he opens it as a novelty piece. And then the man in black starts to show up and people start to die.

The story is fun and fast paced. It reminds me of a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits episode because the suspense and pacing is fast and powerful. It really moves and sucks the reader into the story. I zipped through most of it, until there was a break, toward the 80% mark, the story stops and hits a huge flashback that turns into an information dump. I understand why this happens, and it does really set up the finale, but there was so much momentum that immediately is gone, also makes it hard to get back into the current story.

I do like the ending, and I do like the story as a whole. I did not expect as much as what I received from this novel so most of it was a nice surprise. I found this to be engaging, cinematic, and a great deal of fun. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good suspenseful horror book.

This was a great quick read horror tale. It starts with brothers Jimmy & Clint empty a storage unit. They get talked into trading it for a different one. This one holds an old fortune teller machine with an attractive wood gypsy. Jimmy takes the fortune teller machine home, excited that it will be part of the bar he is going to open. Soon he finds out that he got more than he bargained for. Soon he is trying to figure out a years old mystery and also trying to protect his girlfriend. I read this in one sitting. It was a fast read but kept me hooked from the first line to the last. I want more! This definitely has me wanting to check out this authors others works. A must read for mysterious tale fans.

    It's like the movie Big...

Only more horrific and creepy!!! We meet Jimmy and his brother Clint who get suckered into a Storage Wars opportunity only to find that what was waiting for them behind the door was something that while innocent looking, would turn out to horrifyingly change someone's luck. I loved the premise of the story and kept wanting to read what would happen next.

Following the death of his great aunt, Jimmy is tasked with clearing her storage unit. When he is persuaded to trade for another unit containing a mysterious fortune telling booth, he soon finds he may have just invited a cursed entity into his life.

I love fun paranormal horror like Death Fortune. The concept of a possessed fortune telling booth that reads out cryptic fortunes of death is unique and quite creepy. The pace and character development are great, which is a pleasant surprise for a book less than 200 pages. Jimmy definitely doesn’t have it all together and isn’t always completely sympathetic, but he makes for a good protagonist. Following him and his girlfriend, Rebecca, muddle their way through unraveling the mystery of Rozelda and her death curse is enjoyable to read. Throughout Death Fortune, I was held in suspense, wondering how this spooky tale would unfold. I loved the ending and thought it was a perfect conclusion.

I received a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

    A fun and easy novella

Despite the last 20% losing my interest a bit, I had a lot of fun with this novella. It not only read easily, but read like a movie novelization. I could see it being the kind of quick, suspenseful flick you'd catch as an exclusive to a streaming service.

    Great short read

If you like adult (and I do stress adult) paranormal mystery with a twist this is definitely for you.

The premise of Death Fortune is absolutely amazing and truly unique. It was fast paced and didn't dull at any point, which was fantastic. I do have to say I found the very descriptive intimacy between 2 of the characters to be out of place and I wasn't a fan of it, but that is just my own personal opinion on that area.
You really got a feel for the characters in such a short story and I don't come across such character or story development very often.
Rozelda's section toward the end is absolutely mind-blowing and the ending was phenomenal.

Thank you to Sean Thomas Fisher for gifting me a copy for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

  • Penny -Thecatladybooknook

I wish I could say that I loved this book as much as I love the cover. It's a short, gripping read for sure and I liked it overall. I enjoyed the writing style being as descriptive as it was also. Definitely has some creepy vibes and a few scenes that felt like the old time horror movies where your car won't start until the VERY last second. LOL

I figured out somewhat part of the ending at about 75% in but it was still fun to see it play out. If you want a fun, paranormal, can't wait to see how it ends, then this is the book for you to check out.

    Death Fortune

An old woman passes on, leaving her two nephews her estate. When they discover a storage unit clogged with the broken and discarded, they despair... Until a "fortuitous" trade nets them a unit with one item: Rozelda...

    Spine tingling !

  • Hayla

This novella was such a fun read!
The pacing was absolutely perfect and I am just a huge fan of the writing - it’s so descriptive I felt like I was actually right there.

    Here’s an example:
“Setting his jaw, he yanked on the handle, sending the metal door rolling up into the ceiling. Tiny wheels click-clacked through curved tracks, a nerve-racking drumroll preceding the big unveil. Warm, musty air wafted over him and then, save for a brief jiggle, the noise all stopped. Heart banging in his ears, a pent-up breath squeezed past his lips, sinking his suntanned shoulders.”

    Just beautiful.

I also enjoyed how this story didn’t rely on gore or scary bits to carry it along. Fisher knew his suspense would carry the story on just fine.
I do wish we completed the Rozelda story. I want to know what happens to her after the events of this novella; particularly since there was a scene showing her back story.

I recommend this story to seasoned horror fans who are looking for something lighter as well as those new to the genre or aren’t gore fans.

I’m absolutely in for anything else Fisher writes! Thanks so much to the author for reaching out and sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review. 🖤

  • Angel (Bookn.All.Night)

Jimmy's Great Aunt has passed away and while he and his brother are clearing out her storage unit, they are offered a unique trade by Max Kellerman. One unit for another, contents unseen. They jump at the chance and upon opening the unit they traded for, they find an old fortune telling machine called Rozelda. Even better, it works as Max tests by inserting a dime in return for his fortune.

Jimmy is excited as he believes this will be a great addition to the bar he wants to open. So he takes Rozelda home. The next day his brother calls and informs him of Max's death...not 24hrs after he pulled his fortune from Rozelda. There is a counter that Jimmy swears was at 997 when he brought Rozelda home. It has now changed, on its own, to 998. Coincidence?

This is a quick read, reminiscent of The Creep Show (which I absolutely loved growing up). Great characters, easy flow, and creepy vibes makes this a great addition to any Spooktober list.

I sincerely appreciate the author gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed herein are mine and mine alone.

Death Fortune by Sean Thomas Fisher

We’ve all seen those old machines inside an arcade that have seemed to withstand the tests of time. You just keep staring at it waiting for it to move eventually.

Death Fortune is that creepy feeling trapped inside of a novella. When our protagonist Jimmy comes into contact with an old timey fortune telling machine, his weekend plans turn from mundane to troublesome real quick. Will you let Rozelda predict your future?

Overall I really enjoyed this story. It was fast-paced and I thought the plot was spaced out very well. I like when stories take place over the course of only a couple days.

The character building was well thought out and you can tell the author really paid attention to the small details that make you understand who the person you’re reading about is (i.e describing the items in the center counsel of his vehicle.)

I give Death Fortune 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Stars. I honestly recommend you all snag this up on your Kindle while it’s still only .99 Cents if you want a quick, fun read.

  • thebrunettebookjunkie

A gripping story about an old fortune telling machine that somehow possess evil magic...or does it? This is a fast paced and action packed novella. Honestly, I wish it had been fleshed out into a longer novel because the premise and writing is well done. Graphic smut content is unnecessary and does nothing for the story in my opinion.

  • EmmaPromotesBooks

Old school horror; entertaining and spooky!

  • Joni Owens

    Wow!!!!

This book is way out of my usual read. Loved the creepy concept of this ebook. The characters are believable and their reactions realistic. It’s a quick creepy creepy read. Definitely recommend.

  • Lora - questsandcrimes

When Jimmy makes a storage room trade on the spot, he gets more than he bargained for. At first, the fortune telling machine seems like a great addition for the bar he plans to open. A life size mechanical woman that spits out fortunes is something drunk people will love. Jimmy quickly discovers that the machine is much more sinister and lives might be at stake.

I’m not sure how to rate this one. It is a fun, if campy horror novel that reads like a movie. It is a quick moving story that I breezed through when I finally sat down with it. If you enjoy horror movies, you’ll likely enjoy this book!

I am uneasy about continuing the use of the word gypsy to describe people. I know some have embraced the term, while others find it extremely offensive. Having no real knowledge, I tend to just avoid the phrase. This book is very male gaze, which caused some eye rolls for me (RE: “he made love to her like a man does TO a woman.” 🙄). I also didn’t love all the drinking and driving.

Death Fortune is a quick read for fans of movies like Drag me to Hell. I really enjoyed the story, just not some of the language. The ending of this one is pretty fun and leaves room for a sequel...maybe 👀👀👀.

Thank you to the author for my review copy in exchange for my honest review.

What happens when two brothers find a creepy old fortune telling machine in a storage unit that ends up being cursed? Read this and find out!! It was an excellent unique and quick read, and well written! I enjoyed the characters and couldn’t put this down as I was reading it. I highly recommend!!

I will add a quick disclaimer that Sean did reach out to me and gave me a free kindle copy, in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much Sean, it was a fantastic read!

Jimmy has inherited one of those animatronic fortune-telling machines. You know the ones? The ones with a painted wooden ‘fortune teller’ inside who tells you your fortune in a creepy mechanical voice? Yeah, that kind. It doesn’t take long before Jimmy suspects that there’s more to Rozelda than meets the eye. The fortunes she tells start coming true...and they have a deadly twist to them.

I’ve always hated those fortune telling machines and now I’m glad I have a valid reason for it. This was basically a classic 80s slasher film but at the behest of a creepy animatronic fortune teller. This was a nice, short read that’s easy to knock out in a couple hours. The plot is enjoyable and keeps you turning the pages.

  • Jess

    A nostalgic horror feel!
    A great quick weekend read.
Looking forward to reading more by Sean Thomas Fisher.

🔮“An animated fortune teller that hands out death sentences? I can’t tell if we’re batshit crazy or if we’re actually on to something supernatural here.”🔮

Once I started Death Fortune by Sean Thomas Fisher there was no way I WASN’T going to finish it in one sitting.
This story felt like it could be an episode of Creepshow!
It was fast paced and spin tingling!
Every time there was a interaction with our eerie animated fortune teller, I got the creeps! What a fun spook this was!
I think just about any fan of the paranormal would enjoy this book.
The ending was a little predictable, but, I don’t really have a problem with that, especially when it was still a good ride getting to that satisfying ending.👌🏻
So come on, give it a read!
AND after reading this story you bet your ass I’m never putting a coin in one of these types of machines again! Just can’t take that risk!
After liking the story AND the writing style, I’m definitely going to check out all other works by this author, and will be keeping an eye out for any future work!

Thank you SO much to the author for gifting me a copy! It was a pleasure!💀

  • Jennifer *Last Book on the Left*

Sean reached out to me to see if I would be willing to read his book. It was available on Kindle Unlimited so I decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did. It was a very good story. It follows Jimmy after he inherits a fortune telling machine from a traded storage unit, but could it be cursed? Because Rozelda only seems to hand out fortunes that lead to death. Jimmy will need to figure out what is happening before he loses the people that are closest to him.

This was a quick fun read that was well paced and had a good amount of creepiness. I saw other people say it was like Goosebumps for adults or Creepshow and I can definitely see that. If you are looking for a fast paced paranormal story I recommend this one.

  • Courtney (courtney_three_tears)

Death Fortune was short story by Sean Thomas Fisher (@ ). He gifted me a copy of it to review, and I was quite impressed!

Death Fortune is the story of Jimmy, who inherits an old fortune teller machine that he plans to put in a bar that he is opening. He then realizes that there is more to the machine, and the gypsy inside, than he first realizes.

This story was well put together, and kept me interested through the whole stories. It was a quick read for me, and it was action packed the whole time. I really enjoyed the way the story moved from present tense to backstory. It flowed really well.

The only criticism of this story I had was that it was fairly predictable. But, I always think that the journey is what matters and this was a pretty fun journey.

  • Heather Horror Hellion

    I rate it 3 stars.

The storyline is cool. Is the fortune teller really killing people or does this guy really just drink too much?

The characters were well written and likeable. Except for the ones you were supposed to dislike and boy did I dislike them.

The problem I had was it went from really cool mystery thriller with a Creepshow feel to paranormal romance sex scene real quick. I understand the reasoning behind it but it really did just throw me off for a couple minutes.

The book ends well, I l really enjoyed the ending.

  • Hannah | Reading Under Covers

I have to DNF this book at 26% because ooof, the male gaze is strong in this one and I don’t think I can handle one more “I looked at her ample breasts” and “licked my lips” in regards to a human woman or the fortune telling machine that the MC is tragically attracted to.

The author gave me a copy of this book for an honest review, and since I couldn’t finish it, I won’t be giving it an actual rating, but will instead be leaving my two cents here in regards to the first quarter of the book.
