He died. Who? Sukanto Bhattacherjee.
Sukanto, sole heir of the wealthy Bhattacharjee family found dead in his own house ‘Bhattacharjee Bari’, in his study room in early hours of the morning, when he didn’t came out for breakfast and no one saw him since last night. His family looked for him and found him sitting a chair, head rested on the table capped with hands. There was no trace of blood or any foul play, he died sleeping peacefully. The Police started their investigation and in the initial search, they found a note. A suicide note by Sukanto but not written. The suicide note was typed and placed carefully under his favourite crystal jug. He did not cut his wrist, he didn’t consume any poisonous substance, and he didn’t hang himself. His autopsy report, too, indicates organ failure.
He just died.
Was it really a suicide or a well-planned murder?
Sukanto left behind a shocked mother, hapless wife, tormented friend, a paranoid paramour and mystery of his death.
The story is a psychological thriller and suspense is deep hidden. You need to dig deeper to find the truth and remove the façade worn by the murderer. The story is a mystery of the death of Sukanto, who died in mysterious circumstances in his own house. When I first started reading the book, I found the initial chapters stretched to the length, but when I proceed in the story I found them relevant and connected in the later part of the story. The second half of the story will hook you at one place till you finish the book.
The book narrated the story of a Bengali family. The author used few Bengali lexemes and some common terms of the language at places that only makes it more relatable. The book is lovable by the mystery readers. It will boggle their mind; unnerving secrets will reveal deeply hidden secrets of a family and expose the truth. The weaving of the plot is beyond doubt and brilliantly done. The way the story unfolds is unexpected and no one can discern what he/she will come across on next page.

Story in a nutshell:
Sukanto is found dead in his study. He has left a letter behind. The letter proves that it is a suicide. His mother, his wife, his girlfriend and his friends are all shocked with his sudden departure. There is another angle to this story. The police suspect Sukanto's death to be a murder. They talk to every person Sukanto was related to in order to find any clue. They do this through Atanu, Sukanto's childhood friend and a RAW scientist. Are the police successful in finding the murderer? Was it a murder in first place?
Review:
Have you ever closed the book midway during reading and closed your eyes to absorb what is happening in the book? Well, 'Wants and Desires' did the same to me. There were many incidents in the book which made me wonder what the story is going to me. The more I tried to deduce an end, the farther it went. The more I tried to solve the mystery, the more I found myself confused. The book has the power to leave you wanting for more.
The story is a psychological thriller. It will keep you on the edge. This perfect plot has been crafted thoughtfully. The narration is in third person. The language is simple and is easy to comprehend. There have been occurences of a few new words here and there. And that makes me say that the book is rich in vocabulary. The authoress' matured way of writing made this book an engaging read. The talks of the characters seemed to gell well with the situations. There weren't any loose ends. There is mystery, love, hatred, jealousy and longing in this story. The characters have been rightly sketched. Each has a story. Each tells a story. Wants and Desires is a story within a story. You will want to finish this story in one sitting.
I would like to mention the authoress' dedication here. She dedicates the book to all those people who are fighting mental ailments alone. When I read this, I was sure that I was going to have an awesome read.
I rate:
Cover: 3/5
Characters: 4/5
Story: 4/5
I rate 'Wants and Desires' with 4/5 stars. -
A classic who-dun-it with a subtle but admirably mysterious background, Wants and Desires
by Chitrangada Mukherjee is a good psychological thriller, perfect for a rainy weekend.
Sukanto Bhattacharjee dies suddenly soon after his 35th birthday in his house. He is found in his study, with his head on the desk and arms wrapped around it, as if sleeping peacefully. He leaves behind his mother, his wife and friends and they are all suspects, according to the police. A letter is found hidden under a crystal jug in the study, which doesn't seem quite like a suicide note but definitely hints towards it. The suspects, each with their own vice, talk kindly of the deceased but one of them is the murderer. If it was a murder after all.
I was so proud reading this book. Our country is filled with so many talented story tellers, I strongly feel they should be promoted more! Wants and Desires is such a beautifully executed book. Now, this isn't the kind of book to give you nightmares but the one that makes you ponder over the human mind and the circumstances and situations that disturbs them. With a sharp narrative that later turns into dialogues during conversations, it is a well written story with a well executed plot.
The characters are the highlights. Each of them is a suspect and they all could have done away with Sukanto. Sukanto himself is portrayed as this quiet guy who wouldn't seem to hurt anyone. I put the book down and spent a long time contemplating the drastic events that unfolded, which were so matter-of-factly written. This is just one of the many things I love about the book. The little nuances of a Bengali household adds to the charm created by the author and the beauty of the story.
Last word. I loved it! Definitely recommended for mystery/thriller fans. Will watch out for more from the author. -
You know you're reading a great book when you get so engrossed in the details that you forget to track the murderer which, incidentally, has always been your favorite part of a suspense thriller. Although to be fair, this book gave no clue as to who the perpetrator might be.
The book has quite a few dialogues which might be difficult for non bengalis to make sense of but on the whole, its entertaining and its brutal and the revelation at the end couldn't have been more surprising.
To be honest though, I still don't understand the final letter in the book. Is she schizophrenic or is she not? -

Three Women & A Murder is A Psychological Thriller by Chitrangada Mukherjee.
The story is told in the perspective of all three women as well as the police.
Now, even though the latter does have a substantial role in the story, I was very intrigued with how well written the perspectives of all the three suspects were written ensuring that we are kept on our toes as readers while still providing a bit of the psychological twist most of like but not much is given away at a time.
I was impressed with the way the story went and even though the ending was a bit of a stretch when it comes to "twists" it might be ok for some.
It's not much a thriller per se because there's not much covered in that area but it's still a fun book to read with the whodunit mystrey aspect being on point

So I wanted to rate this as 1 for being a terrible mystery, rating it as 2 only because it was short and quick read.
My first issue was with the author throwing in 10-15 characters right within first 5 pages of the book. I’m terrible with names, and to top it Bengali names.
Anyway, further I have no idea why the author introduced some details : Why did Kalpana speak to Shayantika? Why the angle of tribal girls? Unnecessary leads on Jewel’s education.
I was trying to pick up clues from the dates, small details- about his mom’s cleanliness OCD, about food mentions. But realized I was reading too much between the lines. It’s as if the author started the book with a murder, beat around the bush with some drama/gossip in the middle, have the murderer CONFESS about doing it and her technique!
No clues, no story leading up to the murder, nothing. In fact there’s no closure either because no one ever finds out who did it or the intention! A normal human LEAVES a cheater, not kills him. All in all terrible book. -
A short intriguing psychological thriller.

Review:
🌟As the name suggests, the story is a psychological thriller. A murder mystery as one can guess.
🌟A murder often develops suspicion on the people related to the victim. The story is about a Sukanto's murder and there were three suspects to it - mother, wife and girlfriend.
🌟The humans' life is a gamble of relationships and that is well explained by the author.
🌟Each suspect has been developed very well and their point of views.
🌟The chapters maintain the flow of the story.
🌟The language used is easy to understand.
🌟The title and the cover are 💯 appropriate.

Sukanto Banerjee is dead and the cause is still a mystery. Was it a natural death or a murder? And what untold stories lie hidden in his last letter, an apparent suicide note?
There are three suspects- the schizophrenic mother, the hapless wife, and the loyal girlfriend, and each of them might have had a fair motive and chance to kill Sukanto.
The strange intricacies of human relationships lead to unforeseeable outcomes. Chitrangada Mukherjee’s latest novel, ‘Three Women and a Murder’, a psychological thriller portrays this to perfection. The plot develops through POVs of each of the suspects, which in turn gives a psychological insight into the character's personalities. The Bhattacharjee Bari houses its own secrets within its grand splendor which unfold as the novel progresses.
The writing style, character development, and pacing, as usual, is commendable. Writing a murder mystery through POV’s of each suspect is undoubtedly a good concept. Except for the fact that I found the climax a bit predictable, this novel is quite enthralling and if you love psychological thrillers, take my word and go for it.
I am grateful to the author for providing me with a copy of her book, ‘Three Women and a Murder’. The review, however, is unbiased. -
This is a perfect suspense novel I would recommend to all readers. The plot was extraordinary showing the complexity of human minds and relationships.
Plot developed quite smoothly, perfectly building the tension and the revelation left me surprised.
The writing was sophisticated and characters well built.
I have read the author's previous novels and she always tries to experiment with genres delighting the readers. She justifies whichever genre she writes. And her experiment with all genres makes it more interesting to read her novels.
This one has fulfilled all my expectations and I won't be exaggerating when I say that I feel she is one of the very few Indian authors who did remarkable work in writing a thriller. -
Wow this is the best work from this writer till date and her story telling ability is increasing book by book.
So this is a simple murder story which can be written in a back of a stamp. But the way the author serves us the story with twisted screenplay is matters.
I love all the characters in this book.
I would recommend this writer to concentrate more on thrillers for sometime as her writing spree is in good form now and she is good in handling the thriller quotient
