Cordillera Tales Reviews
-
A sampling of stories and myths from the tribes of Cordillera. Lots of observations of the natural world (“The Origin of Mountains”, “The Sky and Its Contents”, “The Earthquake”) and anthropological phenomena (“Why Women Have No Beards”, “Why People Die Young”). The highlights for me are the tales featuring the fantastical (“The Giantess and the Three Children”, “Ipngaw and the Gian Gisurab”) and the more obscure, but not unknown, characters of Philippine mythology (“Aginsood”, “Dakbungan”). Would love to read a longer work like an epic next.

Since I'm from Mindanao, I'm not familiar with tales from the northern Philippines. (I'm not even that familiar with tales from Mindanao either hehehe). This book really surprises me with wonderful stories (some are familiar like the "Why There Are Many Languages on Earth" which is equivalent to the "Tower of Babel" in the Bible, and others). The illustration are beautifully drawn too.

This was one of my favorite books as a kid.
I read it over and over again.
