Demon King (Claimed by Lucifer, #1) Reviews

The whole premise of Demon King is centered around Hannah Thorn who is desperately trying to find her friend who was last seen in Las Vegas. And in her quest to find said friend, she makes a deal with billionaire CEO, Lucas Ifer (I’m sorry but what is this name), to find her friend. In exchange, Hannah has to stay with him for 7 nights…

I picked up this book because it had been a while since I’d read a book by Elizabeth Briggs. I enjoyed reading her shifter romance series but sadly, this book was convoluted and lackluster.

Honestly, I like Briggs’ writing style but there was too much telling and not enough showing in this one– which is kind of understandable in this case because we’re sort of thrown into the middle of the story and the author is trying to catch us up. But it felt very rushed and in saying that a lot of the explanations were underdeveloped and contradictory at times. I didn’t feel convinced by the worldbuilding at all. I’m not quite sure how Christian and Greek mythology are supposed to fit together but apparently they do, and we're just supposed to believe it? This book was basically a hodgepodge of Hades and Persephone, heaven and hell, angels and demons… and a bunch of random paranormal creatures that pop in once in a while. It felt like this book was having an identity crisis or something.

Moreover, I found Hannah and Lucas to be very weak main characters, and the chemistry between them felt contrived and lacking. Admittedly, I was more interested in her friend’s romance.

Also, the whole 7 nights thing went nowhere. Each night was supposed to represent a deadly sin, but I literally can’t remember what went on during each of those nights.

Overall, I don’t think this book delivered in what it was promising, probably due to the fact that it was trying to achieve too much at once. I think the author should’ve just scrapped the Hades and Persephone retelling and stuck with the Lucifer storyline. I’m sure everything will come together in the next few books, but I don’t think I will be continuing with this series.

This reminded me too much of the TV show, Lucifer.
Luke was a club owner and Hannah was a flower shop owner instead of a detective. British accent and other things. Luke was boring.
This was a type of retelling, I guess, since it referenced Hades and Persephone.
    The 7 nights were boring.
He was honest with the heroine about being the devil from the beginning. She just did not believe him. Blah. He is was supposed to be the almighty Lucifier and he was just a wimp.
    Did not work for me.

    Lucifer in Sin City!

The following ratings are out of 5:
    Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
    Romance: 💙💚🖤💜
    Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
    Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
    World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎
    Character development: 😚😌😉😍

The heroine: Hannah Thorn - a flower shop owner who lives with a friend Brandi and her friends small child. She came to Las Vegas looking for Brandi who disappeared a few days ago while staying at the Celestial hotel owned by Lucas Ifer. The police wouldn’t help her as soon as they heard where Brandi had been staying.

The Hero: Lucas Ifer (a.k.a. Lucifer) - He is a billionaire and king of Sin City and many call him the devil due to his reputation, not knowing that he is in fact Lucifer. He is known for making deals and being able to get you anything you wanted for a price.

The Story: Hannah goes to Lucas to ask for his help in finding her friend who was staying at one of his hotels. He agrees to help, but wants her in return. She agrees to stay with him in his penthouse for seven days. Hannah keeps getting the feeling she has met Lucas before. Lucifer immediately puts Zel (a.k.a. Azazel) on guard duty saying that ‘she’ had returned to him and is in danger.

The audiobook was told in dual points of view using dual narration where the male narrator does the narration on chapters in Lucifer’s point of view while the female narrator does the narration on the chapters told from Hannah’s point of view. The narration was done by Lia Langola and Will M. Watt who both did a good job. Will did the narration in a British accent which immediately made me think of the Lucifer from the TV series (which I love).

There were some things I really liked about this books and some things I didn’t. I always love a book about Lucifer on earth and in love. There was a pretty awesome shopping spree reminiscent of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, though this one was ruined by Hannah’s feelings about him buying her so much she didn’t need. I don’t know why a woman can’t just enjoy something like this, especially when the man has so much money it is just a drop in the bucket for him to spend some on her.

Then there was the big mystery of who Hannah was to Lucifer. Hints made it obvious that she was his one true love that somehow kept getting taken from him over and over. But it took quite a while for the whole story to come out. Personally I just wanted to know.

    3 SLIGHTLY TEPID STARS

When Hannah’s best-friend goes missing at a conference in Las Vegas, Hannah promises to do all she can to find her and bring her back safe and well to her family. After hearing dangerous whispers of the one man who could possibly help her, Hannah goes to see billionaire playboy Lucas Ifer. Lucas agrees to help Hannah, but no favour comes for free, in return she must agree to be his for seven nights.

I was really excited to pick this one up, I love having the Devil as an MC, plus angels and demons - fab, but this didn't have the sizzle and spark I was hoping for. Heat didn't ripple off the page in deliciously hot waves.

The book does end on a cliff-hanger.

I might read book 2 to see what happens next, although I'm not weeping that it's not out.

Some Imaginative ideas mixed with mythology demons angels and shifters this should have been an instant hit as it ticked a lot of my boxes. The reality though was far different this sounds much better than what it was.

So Hannah a human is in vegas to discover just what has happened to her best friend. Unable to get any answers she turns to Lucas Ifer CEO of Abaddon Inc and the rumoured devil of Las Vegas. It's said for a price he can produce most things. His price for Hannah is seven days of her time in return he will locate her friend. Hannah discovers she’s made a literal deal with the devil and there is much more to the past than she could have ever imagined. Ancient curses and a love as old as time playing out across the aeons and Lucifer and she have the starring role one that always ends tragically. But will this time be any different.

I thought I’d love this one I mean the devil duh but I’m actually feeling a bit lacklustre about it. I didn’t technically not like it but it all just felt a bit boring and contrived. I wasn’t a fan of Lucifer or Hannah thought they lacked chemistry and Lucifer just didn’t feel like the big bad. Also, I didn’t like that Lucifer Seemed very Nonchalant regarding losing Hannah considering it almost inevitable. it felt like he thought it was going to happen eventually so why bother might as well accept it at least that’s the way it felt to me.

I also thought he wasn’t very good at her protection you’d think he wouldn’t let her out of his sight considering she’s his soul mate and destined to die but she seems to have a lot of freedom for a marked woman. You’d think being who he is Lucifer would be able to keep her safe but he just leaves her unattended with a single bodyguard knowing she is in danger it just didn’t compute logically.

The writing was fine and it had some good ideas but it also felt predictable and just a bit flat I’m not even sure if I’m planning on continuing yet I might just to see how Hannah reacts to that shocking betrayal at the end of this; Now that I did like and more of that behaviour would have made this a much better experience all around. I’ve got a feeling though that our Hannah is just going to roll over and forgive Lucifer as the girl really doesn’t have much of a backbone.

Look this was decent enough it just didn’t capture my imagination beyond the superficial and with the flat chemistry it just tanked and burned for me which is a shame because the initial premise really intrigued me. I have a soft spot for villains but unfortunately, Lucifer just didn’t cut it he’s a literal pussycat.

I wish I could have loved this, especially seeing as it's reincarnation and a loyal hero, but I was bored AF. Everything was so shallow and pointless. The heroine is also annoying, and the hero is WAY too soft for supposedly being Hades/Lucifer. And one last thing that bothered me greatly, is WHY are there so many similarities to the show Lucifer? It was so cringe.

  • These Violent Delights (Robin)

I really enjoyed this read. I don't know why I didn't know this series is connected to the Seraphim Academy series, so glad I read and loved that series.

That ending though!?!?!?! Holy Sh**! I already went ahead and preordered the books 2 & 3 on Kindle.

    ........ Kinda like tv show?????

This kinda read like an episode of “Lucifer” even down to his British accent and and the Mazikeen doppelgänger . Except this time he’s a mobster who owns Vegas and the Detective is his long lost love .... um idk if I’ll read the next one

  • Roxy the Fury

    Long and drawn out

This story has many contradictions. The main heroine, Hannah, is a simpering fool. The devil, Lucas Ifer, was a soft male lead. I expected so much more but ended up with a cliff hanger instead. I skimmed the last half of the book. I would not recommend and I will not continue the series

“We’re meant, through all eternity, to be together. It is our fate. Our destiny. And our curse” (213.

Hannah's best friend is lured to Sin City and hasn't been heard from. The only solution to finding her is asking a favor from Lucas/Lucifer himself, the known King Pin of Las Vegas & the Underworld. In return, she will endure seven nights dedicated to each deadly sin. Low and behold Lucifer has been anticipating Hannah's inevitable arrival. It was fated long ago. But another will always come for her and incite the never-ending cycle the three are intertwined in.

“Give me books over diamonds any day, thanks” (94).

There is so much going on in the story. The first half is pretty simple as a plot. Hannah is spending seven nights with Lucifer to find Brandy. He admits to being the Devil from the very beginning and I will discuss that definition later. Boring until Hannah is attacked and saved by Lucifer while at his club. It buzzes to the Brandy rescue mission and the revelation of Hannah's past lives. The historical aspects were really nice insertions away from the main plot and constant cries from Lucifer about his lust for Hannah. The plot didn't disappoint for the most part. On the other hand, the cliffhanger ending annoyed/confused me. If this was a solution that Lucifer noted was always a possibility, why not do it sooner? Why wait centuries later to try something or anything for that matter differently? As for the prose, it's nothing out of this world. Mundane with a dual perspective, accompanied by shorter chapters that helps the reader ride through the book much faster.

“The feeling that I knew Lucas redoubled, like a memory just outside my grasp, or a word on the tip of my tongue. And with it came a rush of desire so strong it took my breath away” (13).

These characters did not work for me one bit. Lucifer, the King of the Underworld and King Pin of Las Vegas, was as soft as pudding. His one act of being "evil" was justifiable execution for treason and kidnapping both Brandy and Asmodeus. I was looking for a dark demon and given a lonely man crying for his long lost love repeatedly. I would understand if Hannah was in the least interesting but she came off bland, at least in this reincarnation form. There is even a seen in which Lucifer admits to being jealous of Gadreel. As for the adult scenes, it's as conventional as conventional sex can be. Basic, bare, minimal. Not what one thinks when reading a book that involves a demon. The "Mine" thing gets old really quickly once you have read enough romance novels. Possession in Lucifer's case was more accurate to his character, but still never an okay thing to just simply accept as Hannah does.

“I was Persephone being claimed by Hades, and I had no choice but to enter his underworld and become his dark queen” (319).

Will I continue on? No way. The accuracy of mythological historical facts alongside a decent plot gave me reasons to stride through to the end. The characters truly pulled me to the opposite end of the spectrum. If not for a quick read, I would have abandoned it around a quarter through.

    SPOILER FREE

    Oh lordy.

OK so I dived into these after being cliffy traumatised by her other series.

Now I noticed this series has some mixed reviews but I've got to be honest for me it was a breath of fresh air.

Hannah had lived many lives literally but also unbeknownst to her, currently. She is emotionally overloaded which leads to outbursts of tears and sometimes tantrums. Normally that would annoy me but given her circumstances it was actually understandable and I found her very likable and sweet as a character.

Lucus is the king of hell, the damn devil in the flesh. I loved him. His arrogance was on another level but he wasn't this hard bad guy you'd think and you'd normally find in these stories. I like that he was all for his woman and sweet. I enjoyed that softer side of him but make no mistake he wasn't all soft... the man has darkness.. literally.

Their dynamic was quirky because they technically are not strangers and yet in many ways they are. They had instant chemistry and a connection that could only be had with mates. But they still had to learn all over again which was interesting considering the circumstances they found themselves in.

It's safe to say they didn't have an easy journey and this was just the beginning. The foundation of their epic three book story. What a way to start though. Elizabeth gave us tension, suspense, action and a whole lot of surprises. She packed a bunch with this crazy book and this ever evolving world and I have to say I'm definitely a fan.

That ending though!!!!!!. I was not OK.

  • Ashley Carr, LSoR

This is a new author to me and I can’t believe I waited this long to read her! I love how she wove Mythology and PNR together flawlessly. This story we meet Lucas/ Lucifer and Hannah it’s a twist on Hades and Persephone and some of the prominent couples from Mythology. Lucifer has closed the gates of hell and all demon kind are living on earth centered in Vegas. When Hannah‘s best friend goes missing from one of Lucifer’s hotels she makes a deal with the devil, literally, to get her back. But the demons stage a coup because they feel Lucifer has gotten weak and they don’t want Hannah who is now reborn a human to be with him. Will Lucifer be over thrown as the King of Hell? I love how the past and present are woven together flawlessly. Be warned, this book is in a cliffhanger and I can’t wait for the next installment!

  • Lisa Brick

    What??

So I was confused and bored all at the same time. Christianity and Greek Mythology were thrown in together and by the middle I tuned out and couldn’t wait for the end. Then it was a freaking cliff hanger! Seriously?!? *insert eye roll* So annoying. I honestly don’t care to finish the series. I’m moving on!

  • ♥♣Mary♦♠ If She So Pleases

Mentally preparing myself for the hail Mary's.

I enjoy a book with a good plot and this book kept me hooked.

    One of my favourite parts;

Hannah's favourite food is Italian, specifically spaghetti, and that scores points with me.

  • Esmiralda

Please take in mind it’s my opinion, and everyone is allowed to have one.

I started this book open minded, didn’t read the summary at all. I trusted the person who recommended this on booktok, and I’m glad I did. This was such a great and easy read, absolutely liked it from beginning till the end.

The story was really nice, and the plot was good. There was enough drama, action and romance in this. The way the book ends with a cliffhanger, I cant wait to read the second book!

  • Yeri

    Should I continue?

I’ve been toggling between a 3 and 4 star rating because I really enjoyed the story most of the time. There were just more parts than I would have liked where I felt a big disconnect and I’m assuming that disconnect would be explained in book two, I just don’t know if I’m interested enough to dive into that.

I will say, it’s been a while since I’ve read a book that featured demons and angels because I try to avoid anything “biblically” related. And while this has a bit of that it wasn’t necessarily “christian”. There was a bit of Greek mythology, and mentions of different types of paranormals.

  • B.L. Cagle

I listened to the audible version but also have the physical book - I loved the voice of Lucifer but him portraying Hannah fell flat but this didn't deter me from the overall story - I really enjoyed it and will be picking up the next book in the series.

    Co to było! Wow!

Osobiście bardziej mnie to odpycha niż przyciąga 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • Sabrina

And in case you're wondering, yes, wing size does correspond directly with other body parts.

It was a great fantasy romance. I enjoyed the story and it was different with the mix of Lucifer also named Hades in history. All the gods are the same, only in a different name. Lucas is mysterious and so hot. The book was hot. Some quotes made me laugh so much. I didn't expect who was the vilains. I would recommend it.

  • Elle ♡ [semi-hiatus]

DNF @ 53% for now...This isn't horrible, but I haven't had much time to read these past couple days due to the holidays, but I honestly haven't wanted to. I don't love reincarnation storylines because it's hard for me to feel and believe in the connection to the current version of the love interest. There were some weird plot elements, a few cringey things, the world building is pretty meh and I'm not super compelled by these characters and their supposed love story. I was trying to power through this, but then I found out it's a trilogy and there's no way I'm reading two more books about this couple so I'm out.

  • Littlebookishbirdie

"I was Persephone being claimed by Hades, and I had no choice but to enter his underworld and become his dark queen."

Hannah's best friend went missing during her trip to Las Vegas, city of sin. So she goes looking for her and when she turns up empty handed, she seeks help from the only person who can: Lucas Ifer. Lucas will help but on one condition: Hannah must spend seven days with him.
    ___________________________________

I wanted to love this. I don't hate it but it isn't one I find memorable. I don't find anything technically wrong with this book. This is a simple dark fantasy that I liked but couldn't love.

I wanted Lucas to be darker. Maybe I'm more used to these incredibly sinister villains now. Lucas definitely isn't a sweetheart but there wasn't a build up with the romance. It is clear from the beginning that Hannah is supposed to be with him. You don't get the backstory for quite some time but none the less, you know they have been lovers in a previous life.

I've read other stories similar to this. It's the idea that they have lived multiple lives and they always end tragically. I've never seen it done well, at least not for me. So I probably already had a bias after I realized that. Hannah was an okay character for me. I didn't dislike her but the ending with her was kind of dramatic.

The curse was well thought out though and I liked that the author incorporated other ideas into this like Hades and Persephone. I also enjoyed the heat build up and the way Lucas wants seven days with her, for each sin.

This is still a great read. I would recommend checking it out. I just wanted it turned up more. I still plan on reading the second book. I'm just not in any hurry.

  • Jennifer G

Hannah went to Las Vegas in search of her missing best friend. She found so much more. A world of angels, fallen, demons, shifters, and fae. A life forgotten, an eternal love, a curse, and danger.

With a mix of Christianity, mythology, and a touch of the television show Lucifer, Elizabeth Briggs has created an entertaining story about star-crossed Lovers. I love the concept of reincarnated love. I would have preferred more backstory, more details of Hannah's past lives. I think it would have solidified the connection between Hannah and Lucifer. I loved Lucifer's week of seven sin dates. I'm not sure what it says about me that I am a bit jealous. I was not a fan of the side stories of The demon insurgence or the rescue and love story of Hannah's best friend. Instead, I would have preferred to spend more time with Lucifer's inner circle and a deep dive into Lucifer's world. It did end with a cliffhanger but that shouldn't have surprised anyone; it does say #1. I'm hoping book 2 goes even deeper into their history as Lucifer and Hannah face the future.

  • Elena Rego

I struggle with reads like this. I picked it up because I wanted a fun mindless read, but the tropes are tiring, particularly the Pygmalion/pretty woman-he's rich-she needs lifting up in status and wealth nonsense we keep seeing in so so many of these books.

I'm also finding that attempts of keeping the dominance/submission dynamic while keeping it more equitable and pc is clunky as well. We need new ways to play this out that isn't so forced. Though I love a good sex scene, I found myself skipping over all of them impatiently just to get to the end of the story.

Though the turn at the end could be intriguing, I won't be reading any more of this series.

  • Joanna

    1.5

Read like Lucifer x Shadowhunters x Fifty Shades fan fiction

I like the premise because I’m a sucker for Hades and Persephone. I thought her take on Heaven and Hell was interesting and not one I’d seen before.

I think it lost the plot with a bit too many mythical creatures: angels, the devil, gargoyles, vampires, fae, shifters, succubus and incubus, dragons… felt like a crowded kitchen.

Idk why she was like “I kept keep living like this, In fear of Adam finding me” when in every single life she didn’t remember anything anyway?? So until she meets Lucifer she doesn’t even know to feel any fear.?

Might continue the series since it’s on KU anyway.
