"Aren't we chubby, aren't we cute?
Aren't we lovely, as sweet as fruit?
Give us a bear hug, give us a kiss
Regret not later for giving it a miss."

Don't go by the cute, chubby asura faces. They are a bunch of naughty and troublesome asura kids, whom the Gods and Devas dreaded too. The very, extremely, most naughty Asura Tales by @itsanandneel is surely one of our best recent reads.

Personally, I have always seen asuras being portrayed in a very demonic and disastrous manner in all the books and shows. But #anandneelakantan 's Asuras are so endearing that you will enjoy their actions and songs and start loving the little monsters.

The writing is lucid for children, witty, conversational and self-deprecating humour. It absolutely makes you fall in love with the asuras, yet making you feel sympathetic towards the people around them.

With head-strong asuras like Basmasur with his pet pig Nakura, twins Kundaka-Mandaka, eternally hungry bothers Atapi-Vatapi among others, this book is a perfect read for children.

The illustrations are beautifully created with bright colors including the coverpage, giving all its readers a pleasurable reading experience.

    Rating: 5/5

Why do we read stories about inspirational heroes? So we could feel motivated, right? We all need a role model in life, someone whom we can copy or aspire to be like. And hence, we enjoy consuming stories with popular heroes. Whether it is the story of Harry Potter or the stories of Rama and Krishna, heroes' tales are popular among all genres and stroytelling formats, including children's books.

But along comes Anand Neelakantan and shatters this notion. He introduced stories of anti-heroes with books like Asura and Ajaya that narrate poignant tales of anti-heroes, and soon he established a unqie voice and a successful fan-following. And recently, he extended this idea for children too.

Now, why should we read stories about anti-heroes, you ask! The answer is simple. We read a hero's journey so we can feel inspired and follow his footsteps. So we can learn from his strengths and avoid his mistakes. For the same reason, we need to read the stories of anti-heroes too. So we can learn what not to do in life, and avoid the same mistakes they fell prey to.

'The Very, Extremely, Most Naughty ASURA TALES for Kids!' is a book filled with adorably naughty and mischevious asuras who land themselves in trouble, who repeatedly fall for their vices, and pay the price for their behavior. Anand's writing is simple, quirky, loaded with humorous episodes, and a load of wisdom for the young ones to absorb.

What makes this book a truly enjoyable experience are the vivid illustrations that literally breathe life into Anand's writing. Each picture shines and paints an imaginative potrait of its characters. Also, the author's comic timing is impeccable. He knows exactly when to add a funny rhyme or make a pet pig sing 'Oink, oink, oink...'

To conclude with one of the rhymes, I'd say,
    'Yikesssss! Hide and make way,
The mischievous li'l asuras have come out to play!'

Delightful stories for young readers as well as adults. I really enjoyed reading the very naughty Asura tales. The illustrations are magnificent and it shows that a lot of effort has been put into making this book appealing in every way. Book's printing, the font size, colorful images, paper quality, everything is just spot on. I also liked the fact that Anand (the author) has put subtle hints in the book that even when someone is evil (like all Asuras are presumed to be), there is a little goodness in all of them. And they have a scope of improvement. They can be led to the path of good. :) That's a very important message for young adults who are naïve about what's good and what's evil.

    A must-read book for 10+ year children.

When we hear about Asuras, the stereotypical image of dark-skinned, horrendous-looking creatures appears before our eyes. That’s what the legends and folktales have taught us after all! Well, Anand Neelakantan definitely knows how to woo children with his comic narrative that lifts up the mood and also lightens the narrative.

The Very, Extremely, Most Naughty ASURA TALES for Kids! by Anand Neelakantan @itsanandneel

I am a fan of Anand Neelakantan and have read most of his books. So when I got this opportunity to review this kids book by Anand Neelakantan, I was more than ready.

Our kids know a bit about mythology, but we teach them only about Gods. Mishkaa doesn't know much about the Asuras. She knows only a few. This book has some amazing funny and witty stories of the Asuras and Asuris which was fun to read. Mishkaa always thought that Asuras are bad but after reading this book she came up to me and said.. "Mumma, I feel Asuras are not bad.. They are just naughty like the boys of my class" 😂

A few things that I want to highlight are the witty style of writing of author. He is one amazing story teller.

The illustrations by Subhadeep Roy and Shiladitya Bose are catchy to keep the little ones engaged.

The pages are colourful and this book is a must have! Recommended for ages 8 and above.

I cannot begin to describe my happiness when i realized The Book Box Store @thebookbox_store on Instagram carried this title. Wasted no time in purchasing it and was super delighted with the product.

I have read Baali by Anand Neelakantan and was blown away by it. It was serious and gripping at every page turn. But Asura Tales was a book that took story telling to a notch higher. Imagine telling a story to a child. Well, thats exactly how the book was written. Reading it made me feel like someone was story telling the whole book to me. The book is 176 pages long, filled with colours and fun illustrations. Anand has included an interesting introduction, with the tale of Kundakka and Mandakka to initiate the reading child into it. Every story has its own humour and get this, a song! Yes, each tale has a song specifically written for the tale and it was AMAZING!

Anand has also chosen the most popular Asuras and their stories, such as Atapi and Vatapi, Shumbha and Nisumbha and the like. They were funny yet the reading child will be able to pick up values from each tale

I loved this book! And Anand has hinted on another book on the naughty asuras and a book on the tales of the pisachas. I truly hope he does write them, he has an eager reader here! Thank you Anand for this amazing masterpiece!
