The ratings and views are off the chart. The fans just can't get enough. The dungeon gets more dangerous each day. But in a grinder designed to chew up and spit out crawlers by the millions, Carl and Princess Donut need to work harder than ever just to survive.
They call it the Over City. A sprawling, once-thriving metropolis devastated by a mysterious calamity. But these streets are far from abandoned. An undead circus trawls the ruins. Murdered prostitutes rain from the sky. An ancient spell is finally ready to reveal its dark purpose.
Carl still has no pants.
They call it Dungeon Crawler World. For Carl and Donut, it's anything but a game.
Carls Doomsday Scenario (Dungeon Crawler Carl, #2) Reviews
-
This is second in a LitRPG series that picks up where the first left off. Read in order.
The clever hijinks continue in this one, but Dinniman does an interesting pivot; I think successfully. The humor has been forefront from the start, but character development hasn't been stinted so I've grown attached to Carl and Donut in and of themselves. So much so that Dinniman pulled out a couple of weepy moments in this one. One sad but poignant, one simply a heart touching moment. This is amazing writing for something so overtly comedy-based.
I don't have a lot else to say. I was thoroughly entertained and completely engaged. I may not be laughing out loud as often, but I'm completely enthralled. Five stars.
A note about Chaste: This is still very chaste. Carl has too much to do to be doing other people. -
So fun! Good stuff!
Good litrpgs are hard to come by. We all know it, and its a bummer but it makes finding the gems such a pleasure!
Dinniman has created fun characters who feel real! He's crafted a world and a story that is compelling, fast paced, and doesn't get bogged down with the detritus of just average storytelling.
To him I say well done! Thank you for a great read! Eagerly awaiting the next chapter of Carl and Donut! -
I am not a binger. I'm always a season or two behind on television shows because I watch a few episodes and pause to digest what I've seen so far. Then I come back and view more, etc. Frustrates my husband to no end as he always wants to discuss the ending with me....and I'm forever 8 episodes or more behind him. Same with books. I don't want to hit the current book and have to wait a year on a cliff hanger to find out what happens, so I meander my way through a series. Just not a binger.
Until this series.
A friend recommended this series to me. I read the blurb for book one, and got the audio. Loved it! Next thing I know I've listened all the way through to the end of book 3, and have book 4 queued up on Audible. Binge-city. It's not just Dinniman's mix of adventure and humor -- it's that darn Jeff Hays. Comes sauntering in like he's the best and narrates the complete shit out of these books. I couldn't stop listening! And now I'm going to catch up to the writer and be stuck waiting.... I learned my lesson with that red wedding writing non-publishing author that shall not be named. Or the comic series with Wolverine's legs up a damn mountain.....and no next issue. Jeff Hays made me break my cardinal rule....I binged. I binged hard. In my excuse, I couldn't help it. So good. I even snorted my coffee at one point when Princess Donut had a moment.
Darn Jeff Hays. Now I'm looking for other books he's narrated. Dude, you are so good at what you do! And Dinniman -- I work in social services. It's been 2 years of complete crap for me.....but your books made me smile and just have a good time. Such a fun series! I recommend this series to any fan of LitRPG or adventure fantasy. Definitely. And I feel better about the binge -- book 5 about ready to come out on audio. And I can meander through some other books offered through Sound Booth Theater while I'm waiting on Dinniman to churn out more Carl
Love this series! Love the characters! Just entertaining and fun. I did learn one lesson though -- never report to the end of the world in your underwear and a leather jacket. Not a good idea. :)
Definitely reading this series until the very last dungeon floor. And Jeff Hays is at the top of my favorite narrator/voice actor list with Scott Brick, Neil Gaiman, Wil Wheaton and Ray Porter. Yep -- that good, in my opinion. I can't pick a fav -- you guys all grouped up at the #1 spot. It takes a lot to make a caseworker laugh out loud at the tail end of a two year pandemic -- but ya got me Jeff. Several times.
:) All smiles here! Publish more Carl, Dinniman!! :)
I hear tell that Matt Dinniman is going to be in Charlotte, NC at Dragon Con in August. I may just send one of my minions to buy me a signed book. Damn it, Dinniman -- making me a fan girl. Ruining my curmudgeon rep. Sigh.
Great series, guys! If you are into LitRPG -- read it! Or listen like I did. Jeff Hays gives a great performance. Too good at times -- I spit water all over myself when he bleated like a screaming goat guy. Don't drink and listen -- dangerous. Well, damp any way. -
"Yeah, that wasn't very manly of you, Carl. I thought nut-kicking was a big no-no amongst guys."
In the second book of "Dungeon Crawler Carl" Carl and Donut are trying to survive the third floor. I liked this book a lot because I really love the dynamic between Donut, Carl and Mordecai. I'm looking forward to part three. -
This is the second book of the “Carl Series.”
Unlike many RPG/Lit series the second is a fine continuation. Things a moving along with a much more complex plotline. The encounters are also more complex and Dinniman shows his talents in making it all engaging and entertaining.

The world building. Aliens come to Earth. We learn (as does Carl) that they are here to mine the Earth for its rare minerals. But wait! There is more. They are doing so in a way that Earth’s human population is drastically reduced. The remaining fraction of 1 % find themselves “invited” to take shelter below ground. They learn subsequently that they must survive (as best they can) a multi-level maze filled with traps and monsters. For each “success” they receive greater powers and/or equipment. It isn’t long before they learn that this “challenge” is being broadcast galaxy-wide to all intelligent species who are as interested in it as many were to the show “Survivor.” Carl isn’t the best prepared for this – finding himself with his (ex?) girlfriend’s cat (Donut) as they enter. Among the things that Carl must cope with are: Donut may be smarter than he is; Donut can talk; and Carl was surprised and left without his pants or shoes. All will be explained.
4.5*
These really must be read in order! -
Gods this series is fantastic.
This book was a blast! Carl and Donut are still up to their shenanigans, kicking butt and taking names. I cant wait for book 3. -
Another great entry in the series. The book just like the first, was hilarious with great scenes.
Hearing my name in audiobook format was funny and caught me off guard.
Carl and Donut are really fun to follow around.
Mordekai had a great and effective presence throughout this book.
Really looking forward to just how strong Lucia Mar is.
Oh, and the long awaited race and class selection definitely did not disappoint.
Loving how steady the characters are getting more powerful. -
As enjoyable as the first one. While the amount of laugh-out-loud moments decreased a little, intrigue and plot stepped up to compensate.

DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL is my favorite Lit-RPG series and a very good example of "game lit" that doesn't take itself too seriously but makes fun of the format while maintaining a semi-serious premise. The Earth has been destroyed and all of the survivors have been dumped into a dungeon where they compete for an insane violence-hungry audience as well as their fascist corporate sponsors. It's like combining RUNNING MAN with DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS. The first book was excellent but I believe this is even better.
Part of what I enjoy is the introduction of "stories" where our poor Carl has to deal with the badly written and cliched drama of NPCs while he's fighting for his life. We get a great variety of monsters and weirdness here as well. The world-building is slow here but it's never nonexistent and I'm loving learning about the bizarre setting our antihero has been dumped into. -
Don't get me wrong, this was an enjoyable book and my rating reflects that.
It was creative, like the first one. The characters get really put into situations that are entertaining and while reading this as it comes out would probably be more suspenseful, the fact that there are 5 books of the series out removes some of the situational angst.
Nonetheless, the one and only problem I have with this book is that the author uses too much of the "hidden advancements". There were at least 4 times, that I can recall anyways, where the readers were served an AH-HA moment that they weren't privy to before. This is all well in good, but just like everything else in life, moderation is key. -
Well
Covid is helpful for reading. And this book was a very good read. -
4.5 stars - really great / fun LitRPG series. Binge, binge, binge.
-
Full of sarcasm and humour, this is a unique and refreshing series that is unlike no other I've read. Fully entertaining from end to end. High quality prose, taut plot and brilliant pacing... I loved this series so much that I made a full blog post.
Highly recommended!

Still fun. Still pantsless.

Epic rock music starts blasting and the crowd goes wild. Fog machines work on overdrive, giving the whole studio an ominous look. The music rises to a crescendo as the lights flair up, showing the host enter, stirring up the fog as they move towards a large mahogany desk. The music fades out together with the applause.
JG: Welcome, welcome, welcome! This is our show Last Level Tonight, thank you for joining us. I am your host, Jack Gulliver! Our main guest tonight is again, Ms Slagathor who is still following our stars, Donut and Carl around, who have finally reached the third floor.
S: Hi Jack, thank you for having me again! This floor started with quite the excitement, Carl and Donut having to pick their races and classes and all. Don’t want to spoil anything for anyone, but they made quite the choices! Poor Mordecai though… Ah, but my lips are sealed, go read for yourself!
JG: And what did you think about the floor itself?
S: I think it was a nice change to the previous levels, it felt a lot more alive. And those NPCs, especially the elite ones are quite something, aren’t they?
The crowd murmurs in agreement and Jack waves a hand to silence them.
S: In any case, the story is blasting ahead with full force and I’m really enjoying the ride! I got no complains this time around and I’m really excited what the Borant Corporation will come up with for the next floor!
JG: Alright, unfortunately that's all the time we have for today. Thank you, Slagathor for joining our show and see you all after the next level!
Epic rock music starts blasting again while the crowd erupts in applause. The camera slowly fades to black as the noise fades out. -
Enter the Fungeon…
I didn’t spect to enjoy my first foray into LitRPG but after hammering through the first two books of Carl’s Doomsday I’m utterly hooked. A fun commentary on reality TV, game design, and surprisingly compelling characters has combined to create an addictive adventure. -
Dungeon Crawler Carl is going to be (if it isn't already) one of the standout examples of the LitRPG genre.
Diving straight into book 3. -
Love it! One of the better audiobook and series I've listened to. On to book 3!
-
Loved this one too. A great action packed read with some new character introductions. Fun loot and quest storylines. You really can’t go wrong with this series.
-
Series continues to be fantastic through the second book. Goddamn.
-
This just keeps getting better.
Definitely gona keep going with this series. -
אחלה ספר. ה״טוויסט״ האנטי ממסדי היה די צפוי לדעתי אבל בהחלט יש תוספות מרעננות. מקווה שהקו הבלתי צפוי יהיה חזק מהצפוי
-
It just wasn't as funny as the first book. It was okay, some laughs and ludicrous action as Carl and Princess Donut the cat continue their dungeon crawl
-
Brilliant and exciting as Reality TV is, only it’s Mad Max meets the Running Man
Brilliant and exciting as Reality TV is, only it’s Mad Max meets the Running Man with interludes, interviews and mayhem!
I couldn’t stop reading this series from the moment I started it, Carl and Donut drew me into their tragic sudden starring role in a real life or death dungeon crawl. This is no game, there are no extra lives only last minute saves I’d you are lucky enough to earn or loot one.
More of the galactic craziness that is entertainment in their world but genicide to the remaining earthlings. Big business is big and will use any means to profit, always remember that in this new existence.
I only wish I could jump straight to the next book as this game is broken and crooked and humans are just trying to survive as long as they can in hopes of a dungeon escape deal dangled like a carrot after the tenth level.
If they can survive that long as all humans are no longer human or feel the same about saving their fellow contestants. To some of them, other survivors are just experience points and loot waiting to happen. -
Ehhh, more of the same. It starts off immediately after the events of the previous books and plays out like it's next chapters. Which is fine but I sometimes don't mind a little time skip ahead when able to skip over some of the same-same stuff we already are established with.
The world building didn't do much more then the prior book, it added a new floor that had its own new additions but nothing outrageously different to make it feel like it's own thing.
The plot was, meh. There honestly was just a lot of moving parts but none of these parts really felt all that impactful, i felt really reallllllly detached to the main conflict. Mostly because it was set up to be give the illusion of a subplot/sidequest. However it really never transfered over that subplot/sidequest feeling over when it became clear it was going to be the front and center plot. It really didn't leave you with a lot to feel attached to it. You're mainly with our two main protagonist and all other side characters just really arnt there this time and no one really comes in to get you to care about them or what happens with the plot.
The whole clown plot line also felt really messy and not in a fun campy sort of way. It felt more disorganized and stuck together with glue trying its best to work but it never felt like it was working. It felt so throwaway that I practically oh most forgot it happened until I got into writing this review.
The only additions I sorta liked is when the characters stepped away from the dungeon to get into their interviews. These were very small snippets that have huge overall impact to the entirety of what is going on. As short as these moments were you could feel the good writing in them and the overall tone of it felt consequential. I really liked what was developing in those moments and being able to see the view from far away like that. It really feels like those small moments keep developing slowly into something that is bleeding into the dungeon experience and i like how it's tieing itself into it all.
Overall though, this was a averagely good adventure romp that lacked the humor of the first book. However I can see it slowly developing into what I hope is an amazing overarching plot line that delivers the big impact I'm hoping for. -
A cut above the rest
I'm surprised I'd never heard of Matt before stumbling across the first Carl book.
Absent are the typical litrpg flaws of wooden supporting characters, awkward turns of phrase, and a world created to show off how cool the MC is.
I felt like I was back in my youth reading a TOR-published novel, from the relentless pacing to the creative subversion of typical tropes.
Ended up reading books 1 and 2 in two sleepless nights, and I was entertained for every goddamn page.
Bravo
