見える子ちゃん 5 (Mieruko-chan, #5) Reviews

Currently on volume 5, and this series feels like it is building towards some big reveal but not there yet.

Mieruko does go through some funny moments here. One in cooking class where a spirit decides to cook too, but rips out little creatures and their guts to make a dish. It's both disgusting and funny. We also get more time spent on Mieruko's friend, and something about her is adding to big reveals I can already feel it.

The art is still excellent, a good balance of horror and comedy, and I always enjoy the cast a lot. I will continue on enjoying this series.

A new volume and I just had to read on. I have hold on for a week not to read further because I didn't want to read everything in one go. Haha. IN this book plenty of seriousness as Hana gets sick and Miko (and Yuria) have to stuff her full to keep her aura fresh (which let to some hilarious scenes), we see the Miko and the monster again, see Romm (who I still very much distrust especially given all the things he does and I do have the feel he had something to do with Hana being sick), and well, frankly? While I did love a lot of this manga, I do miss the random monsters appearing to Miko that we had in the first volume (and parts of second one). It was just hilarious to see monsters appear in every corner and see Miko try to ignore them. Now it is all serious and one storyline and I just want something light-hearted in between.

Life continues as abnormal for Miko, Yuria, and an oblivious Hana. Cooking class turns into an abject lesson in shame, Hana nearly gets in over her head, and a cold turns into a feeding frenzy of epic proportions. Meanwhile, the very shady Rom lurks in the background with motives of his own and some unusual suspects make a return visit.

After some stellar volumes of supernatural creepiness and general comedy, things have room to breathe for a minute (both living and non-living), which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but definitely feels like a bit of a letdown after the rather excellent horror outings of the last couple installments.

Part of the problem is that I don't like Rom very much as a character. He definitely has the slimy sheen that you want from this sort of slippery charlatan (or not), but we just went through this sort of 'how evil are they' with Miko's teacher a couple volumes back and this feels like we're headed down the same pathway yet again. It's also dragged out a bit longer than I'd like - a single volume would probably have been plenty.

The usual stuff is fine. The first story is actually the best as it blends the series’ penchant for horror and comedy really well for a ludicrous and imaginative one-shot about cooking class. Hana's ungodly creations being so horrific that they functionally act as a ward against the terrors that Miko can see is a great punchline to some truly horrific visions.

Despite my dislike of Rom, the rest of the book does move along at a good clip and successfully brings him further into the thick of things as we follow along with the fallout of Hana visiting the shrine. Hana’s bubbly personality is always fun and she was the perfect choice to see imperilled because she’s the most vulnerable of the trio.

After Hana saves a young man’s life (and precious treasure), nearly at the cost of her own, she picks up a ghastly hitchhiker that Miko notices just in the nick of time after Hana winds up sick (and conveniently allows for Miko’s imagination to provide some tentacle flavoured fanservice for the author to draw *cough*). Hana’s faith in the power of melon bread leads to a good laugh during that story with the young man.

This, in turn, leads to Miko and Yuria teaming up to save her in an absurd bit of business that sees the return of the once helpful shrine maiden fox demon things. It also winds up sending poor Yuria off on her own solo adventure that nearly kills her, as she can’t stop feeling like a third wheel and her wonky self-esteem means she can’t take Miko’s genuine praise literally. Consequently, she wants to gain power but might want to be a little pickier about where she finds it.

The end of the volume turns back to Miko going off on her own to save Hana from whatever has sunk its claws into her. Not that Miko has any power of her own beyond her sight, but that just gives Rom a chance to manipulate things once more, setting up a potential three way throwdown at the start of our next volume.

It’s a good step forward for Miko as a character, going from somebody who passively avoids these creatures to confronting them directly when somebody she cares about is affected by them. Taking responsibility for your actions is strong hero stuff, both from her and our resident fortune teller, who gets some of the volume’s standout moments.

This is definitely more of a connecting volume between major stories, even with the through line of Hana’s affliction by a malevolent spirit. Hopefully next time out we’ll get a bit more information on the shrine plus some resolution to all this, as I do think this particular arc has been stretched about as far as it can go.

3.5 stars - misgivings about Rom aside, he does make for a decent antagonist, this is a good volume and the stories hang together well. It’s not the best the series has been, more of the trio being a trio would have been nice, but it’s worthwhile enough to round it up.

I'm a little frustrated as most of this book is spent doling out tiny hints about the mythology, building the level of looming threat, and teasing big developments for next time. I'm not liking Rom Shindou, the con artist magician, but I'm hoping his mysterious agenda moves things along at least.

And there are still several very striking images and chilling moments to be had. Those shrine maidens!

If you are looking for a Halloween read, this would be a good series to dive into.

Kind of a middling Volume that really is just trying to set up what is coming next. Looks like Rom Shindou is going to be a much larger part of the story than I thought...
    Highlights:
    - Rom and Mitsue finish their passing encounter started at the end of the last Volume
    - Miko and friends take a cooking class... while she tries to ignore a very violent and gory monster cooking other smaller monsters.
    - Hana saves a trinket that fell from a bridge for a kid and gets sick. When Miko and Yuria go to visit her, they discover more about her aura (enhances with food) and help weaken a malevolent spirit that is keeping her sick
    - Yuria goes on a "supernatural tour" led by Rom. She comes to believe that he is the real deal and seeing spirits. She believes he might be more powerful than she is.
    - When Rom offers to take Miko up the mountain to help teach her, she choses to go, despite Mitsue objecting and basically forbidding it.

Looking forward to seeing what happens next. Hopefully not so long till the next Volume.
    Recommend.

While helping a kid, Hana gets into a bit of a pickle. Miko and Yuria rush to help her. It seems the powers of the shrine pose a bigger threat than expected. And what exactly does Rom want? As always, I really enjoy this series for its great monster drawings, interesting cast and the mystery. The fact that appearances can be extremely deceiving and the not all the monsters are bad even if the look that way, makes it all the interesting. It seems that the next volume will at least give some answers. The comedy element this time comes from the side-story at the start, ghosts joining cooking lessons at home economy. Great read, although it does end in a bit of a cliff-hanger.

The suspense in this series is killing me. Miko is being stalked by the spirits of the shrine and has gained Mitsue's help in the matter, but that doesn't mean that other spirits can't cause problems. There's also the creepy man in black, Rom Shindou, who apparently also knows Mitsue (a strained relationship that hasn't been explained).

And never in my life have I been this frustrated by not knowing a language. And this language probably isn't even real. (At least with real languages I can look up the meaning, but if I do that here, it'll likely take me to a wiki full of spoilers).

I didn't think I'd like this series at first (because of the weird booby-grabbing ghosts), but I'm hooked.

I’ve already seen the anime and read beyond the English release so this was old news for me. I still love the way this artists draws monsters, though. The anime doesn’t do most of them justice.

Story wise, this volume is sort of a leadup to the end of the whole “shrine” arc, so it was kinda meh. And some of the events (like the cooking scene) are so good in the anime that the manga felt flat in comparison.

Maybe not fair judgments but just explaining where I’m coming from. Still, I’m still subbed and will continue reading for sure.

  • Craig Schorling

The monster art is so good! We also get a lot in terms of story progression. It is hard to read the guy/apprentice but it is intriguing stuff. Poor Hana is having a rough go of it right now and Miko is doing her best to help her. This was a solid volume and really moved things along nicely.

It’s a simple series but it has the meat and potatoes I like to see in a not-so-popular horror-comedy manga. The story is simple enough that makes you not want to follow it; but because of some eccentric supporting characters, I’d like to catch up with the series. 😊

  • Pamela

    Nice addition to the series

I really liked this book in the series. There were some unexpected parts and one part that actually surprised/scared me a bit, so it was definitely worth reading.

  • Mari Cheshire

Me encanta el nuevo personaje, y los misterios que se van presentando, el ritmo de la historia está un poco lento pero así paso con la trama del profesor y termino con un plot twist muy interesante, espero que está parte de la historia sea igual.

  • Pryscilla Dechaviony

    Things are picking up—so hooked!

  • Tom Soltau

This is beyond just amazing! I highly, highly recommend this to anyone out there interested in horror! (see also my other reviews about volume 1-4 of this manga)

  • Khari

  • Brea

Things finally begin picking up in this volume. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

  • Sparkles Fantastic

4.5 I love this manga series and I'm excited to see the anime that's being produced. The art style reminds me of junji Ito and I really am enjoying the storyline.

    Damn! That was great!
As soon as I finished volume two I got through to 5 so quickly! Was all so good!

The stakes are higher for Miko this time. I love this series!

  • Jack Syron

Even though I started on volume 4 makes me curious if volumes 1-3 are arranged different, so now I'm inclined to get those volumes now. This one is great!

  • sha

this is probs one of the few mangas i never want to watch the anime for

  • Leia Mist

Omg esta serie cada vez da mas miedo por Miko y Hana, quedé super intrigada con el santuario de la montaña o.o

  • Dorcas

As much as I dislike the gratuitous fan service both from ecchi and horror, there’s something compelling about her situation and the characters she interacts with.

  • Pao Castro

4.5 De los mejores tomos hasta ahora

  • sinag

    5/5 stars!

I love Hana's own chapters helping other people while also unknowingly stumbling to ghosts' path. We also get to see cats at the end and I'm so happy!

  • moran

I started reading this because the anime released and I was watching that, both are good, creepy, some great horror and humour, although the ecchi stuff sort of ruins it. Funny enough for a quick read although the anime is very faithful so you could just watch that.

This volume was a bit better than previous, overall I enjoy the story quite a lot!
