My Alpha mate and I are running out of time

In a world where magic is power, I should consider myself blessed. I'm loaded with the stuff. Except I have no control over my new magic, and no idea what I really am. All I know is that I’m running out of time before my magic tears me apart.

When a series of thefts reveals clues about my past, I must follow them. Unfortunately, the only way to save myself is to work side by side with Lachlan, the Alpha werewolf who is also my mate.

The chemistry between us is insane, but if we fall for each other, the Dark Moon curse will steal his sanity. The only problem is—we can’t seem to resist each other. It seems we're damned if we do and damned if we don't.

Pack of Lies (Shadow Guild: Wolf Queen, #3) Reviews

At 40% I'm just done. I'm so tired of the negative motivation* that's dragging this thing into death-defying boredom. Both of them have an external motivation imposed upon them by, well, fate, or something? So there's no way for them to overcome it or reach an accommodation or prove it doesn't matter, somehow. And both of them have death as the consequence of having feeeeeelings. So they have yearnings. Unrequited, fiercely resisted yearnings. And my only remaining yearning is to have it stop. Unfortunately, the only way to achive this is to put the book down and walk away.

    * Negative Motivations: I kind of hate that the term "negative motivation" isn't widespread, yet. Since it isn't, I'm going to save off this little jag to append to my reviews that feature the term.
Jennifer Crusie blogged about it a bit back (or, if that link doesn't work,
here's a cache of the original) and it changed how I understand story. The problem with the term is that if you've never heard it before, you'd assume it meant motivations that are harmful or immoral. Not so. What it refers to is motivations not to do something. The thing is that many of us are motivated to not do things for a lot of different, perfectly valid and reasonable, reasons. The problem is that in a story motivations to not do things are a huge drag on the plot—particularly considering the fact that most negative motivations are overcome by the character simply deciding they don't care any more (or, rather, that they do care and are now motivated to do the thing). So not only do you have a counter to action but you also have a situation where to overcome it, all a character has to do is change their mind. Which means eventually, the reader is rooting for the character to get over him/herself already and do the thing we want them to do. Conflict drives story. Conflict between a reader and a main character drives readers away from story.

This book made me realize I don't like Hall's formula for these books. Star-crossed lovers, teleporting around to find answers/solve problems, meeting other characters from other spin off books, smattering of vague romance episodes, big conflict---> next book.

I like Eve and I wanted to see what her story was so I might stick this out but overall its just too much exposition and interaction with random characters from all the other books. I don't care about the interaction with all their "connections". It gets boring with all the name drops and how much time is spent on this each book.

I chose the shadow guild series because I had hoped it was more manageable out of her books as it was shorter... But there is not much of a difference if its still interconnected to the main series.... I think if she made a stand alone book series and spread her wings from this interconnected world I would enjoy these more.

Christ on a bike 🤦‍♀️ this is one long drawn out story!! I still kinda want to know what happens next😕 but seriously, it just goes on & on & on & on…
    Will I read book 4? 🤷‍♀️
Can I be bothered skimming through pages & pages of the same shite just to finally get “some” answers in the last 10% of the book? Probably not to be honest! Great story and world building but it will bore you to tears eventually.
3 stars for the likeable characters, the research into the vikings & Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and because I’m still intrigued for what happens next.

    Good

    I enjoyed this book 3
But I was hoping that everything would be wrapped up a lot more with this third book, although this book was fast paced, action, storyline was great. Least we found out what she finally was tho so happy about that
Just wish they finally got some sex hopping.lol
Good read will read the next book.

  • Krista

Well, another story that could have been wrapped up in this 3rd book. There will be more, but I don't plan on following more. This is really YA and I am not as happy to be reading this series as I was at the beginning.

What works for me is the action and the hope that the restraint between the 2 MC's will break and they will have wild, passionate SOMETHING. ANYTHING at this point, please! Because this girl has had 3 orgasms with this hot dude who never gets off for himself. Denied? A gentleman? Nope- I suspect its totally the writers fault.

I am NOT happy... I should have known better... 5 bucks says that the story ends with the 2 MC's being the answer to their fates but they denied themselves so much that they made it worse??

I’m abandoning this series. What is it about this author and her “if we fall in love we die” trope? This is the second series I’ve read from her where the fated mates can’t be together for fear of death.

This series is a M/f shifter “romance”…and I’m calling it a romance in the very loosest way. This is the slowest of slow burns with the lowest of low amount of steam. In book one they get near each other and almost kiss. In book two they barely kiss. In book three they actually kiss once. I’ll be surprised if these two actually get together and have sex at all in this series.

Also, it’s not a romance because the two main characters can barely interact with each other. There is no romance, physical or emotional. No dating. No love. There’s nothing!

As to the plot, every single book feels the same. The plot progress is so slow a slug could beat its pacing.

I regret wasting my time reading even this far into the series. I should have known better. I did know better. I’ve never enjoyed anything from this author so it’s not surprising I didn’t enjoy this series either.

If you’re not looking for a romance you might like this book, though the plot is boring and pointless too…so maybe not.

A lot of excitement danger, narrow escapes and of course, Magic

The excitement continues in this action packed 3rd book in the series, but I would have liked to see more development/info regarding h and the Maker.

The heroine, Eve, and the hero, Lachlan, are still fighting their enemy, now known as the Maker. We still don't know who or what the Maker is, but we have learned more about what Eve is and why the Maker wants her. We've even learned part of how he intends to achieve his goals. Although the first part was accomplished, he failed to complete whatever the second part was, though he did manage to escape with something that very likely might help him accomplish his goals.

While the first part has been completed, it is something that Eve needed as well (her transition), which has made her much stronger, but she still doesn't know the full extent of her newfound powers. Lachlan is still fighting the dark moon curse, but he may not be able to fight it much longer and his brother succumbed after the last battle.

Not much romance in this book either, nor any sexual activity...again only one short scene. Eve and Lachlan still haven't consummated the mate bond as they are still fighting it thinking they have no choice if they are to survive. What there was a lot of in this book, was strange creatures/entities, quests and mysteries to be solved, magic, danger, narrow escapes and battles. The fate of all paranormal beings might hang in the balance if Eve doesn't gain control of her powers soon and figures things out to defeat the Maker.

I'd advise readers to leave their common sense in a box while reading this ... a lot is explains or dealt with by magic or potions. Remember, this is a fantasy filled with magic, and all things are possible...or not! On to #4.

Lachlan and Eve are back and this time they are travelling a little closer to home so expect lots of glorious Scottish settings. Eve still has no idea what the Maker actually wants from her but she's determined to live her life her way ! Poor Lachlan is still fighting his curse and things are increasingly getting worse and others are noticing. To add to their problems Lachlans brother Garrett seems to be embroiled in the theft of a missing artefact and as it's obvious he too is cursed what on earth does he want it for ? Yes this couple are in a quandary and that's without the new powerful magic that Eve has acquired trying to tear her apart !
This was fun to read and Eve is fast becoming one of my favourite heroines by this author. As usual readers can expect a little history thrown in which just makes this reader want to visit so many places I wouldn't have previously heard of. Plus we do get to learn something about Eve that reminded me of gifts given to characters in G.On.T. but obviously my lips are sealed and you will just have to discover that for yourself !
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

    Not the final book.

I was hoping that everything would be wrapped up in a neat bow with this third book, but alas, although this book was fast paced and furthered the narrative, it is just one more stepping stone in Eve’s story.

Thankfully we solve the mystery of Eve’s unknown heritage, and we find out more about her parents. Lachlan is still a frustrating character, who we all know will end up with his mate, but his flip-flopping stance on his feelings and motivations really irks me.

That pesky antagonist, The Maker, has a plan that is only half unveiled. Their final confrontation in the book clued me in that this was indeed no trilogy. It’s frustrating to get this far and still have an almost nebulous villain. Oh well, looks like I’m waiting for book four.

We are at the third book in the Wolf Queen series, and it is full steam ahead. Poor Eve’s magic isn’t agreeing with her, and she and Lachlan have to find out what’s going on without him giving in to the curse. This was a well-written, thrill-ride from beginning to end, and we learn a lot more about what’s going on with Eve. I love when we see other characters from other series as it’s like we get to see what’s going on in their lives after their books. If you love a great adventure story to while away an afternoon, you definitely can’t go wrong with this author’s book. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I like it and it‘s exciting!

Sure, i read a lot like this and it‘s offen the Same! But i like the historical Elements in Relation to the Story & the characters!

Stories like this, are exactly mine ;)

One point deduction: -FOR ME- the Romance is toooo Slow, i Need More butterflies … it‘s Book 3… i Hope for Book 4 More than a „Kiss“ and languish 🤞🏼

  • Tiffany Langford

Finally we know what Eve is, but still don’t know why The Maker wants her! It’s a little frustrating but I guess that’s what keeps you hooked by now anting to know what the end game is and what happens between Eve and Lachlan.

  • booknerd_dork

Felt it is dragging a little bit but I am intrigued by the mystery behind Eve's story. Hoping next book will give more answers. I almost dnf it but I sometimes thought about it so will see how the next book goes.

Heerlijke serie ben wel benieuwd naar de rest.

  • Denisa

2.5 Ok, boring again, skimming again, but still curious.

The good part is that it's a pretty short book with fast-paced action, so it's a fast read. Let's see if I can finish the series.

    RATING:3 STARS

In Pack of Lies by Linsey Hall (the third book in the Shadow Guild - Wolf Queen series), Eve and Lachlan continue to forge full steam ahead with trying to find out more about what’s going on without allowing Lachlan to succumb to the curse (due to the mate bond and feelings between them).

By the end of this book, we still only know bits and pieces of the Maker’s plan. It’s a little frustrating to be this far into the series and not have a better idea of why the Maker is putting these plans into action. I’m disappointed in how the final confrontation between Eve and Lachlan and the Maker turned out in this book, as there could have been so much more done with it. It felt less like a full confrontation or battle, and more like a setup for a big confrontation two books from now.

I’m thrilled that we got to learn more about Eve’s parents in this book and finally figure out what Eve is. Ralph, Eve’s chocolate-addicted raccoon familiar is of course hilarious as ever and continues to be one of my favorite parts of this series. Lachlan, on the other hand, is still as frustrating and stubborn, and the fact that he’s constantly going back and forth on his feeling is irksome. One of the main reasons I’ve continued reading this series is just to see Eve and Lachlan finally get together. Alas, I guess I will have to wait for more Eve and Lachlan content and to figure out more about the Maker’s plan until I read the final two books, Rising Moon and Wolf Queen.

This book was a good middle book. We had a lot of action and questions come up in the previous books that needed to be answered.
I loved the adventure Eve went on to discover what made her different. Her connection to the master left me with more questions and I was hoping to have more of them answered. Fingers crossed book 4 does that.
The traveling was so much fun. I love how Linsey brings all the places she writes about to life. She does a great job of blending history and her world together. I want to visit all the places that inspire her stories every time I read her books! Her world is a wonderful vacation.

I really wanted to see more about Liora! I was really hoping when Eve went to see her we would get to learn more about her and her relationship to Eve. I know she popped up later, but I wanted more story with Liora in it. I’m so curious about her and I still have questions about Eve’s parents!

Lachlan and Eve are making me feel frustrated for them. I wish Eve would tell him why she is pulling away. I can’t wait to see if they can get to the other side of what is keeping them apart and finally get to be together!!!

Kenneth is awesome! I loved getting to see Lachlan’s second so much in this story and really getting to see more of how the pack cares for their Alpha.

I recommend this book if you like adventure, mystery, travel, history and a slow burn fated mates story.

    (3.5 Stars)
“Pack of Lies” is a pivotal read in the Wolf Queen series because in this installment we finally learn exactly what Eve is. However, I will admit that this read was one of my least favorites in the series because I grew weary of the emotional tension between Eve and Lachlan because they refuse to communicate or share their reasons for being unable to be together. I kept thinking why doesn’t either one go to the pesky seer and ask if they can reveal their secrets. Oh well!

The Master is out and about setting up a diabolical plan to ensnare Eve into doing his bidding. By taking her charm he has released her magic and now it threatens to tear her apart. Meanwhile she is trying her best to locate Garreth and Lachlan is teetering on insanity as he feels the curse attempting to take over his mind. Time is running out for characters and things definitely don’t look good.

As I stated earlier this installment just didn’t hold my attention like the other installments even though Eve and Lachlan have moments where they briefly hooked up. For me it is a little hard to believe that they are fated mates when their seems to be such a lack of “emotional” intimacy. I still feel detached like I really don’t know Lachlan even though the story is narrated by both characters perspective. I am truly hoping that book four will set things right for me because I do enjoy this series.

Pack of Lies is the third book of the Shadow Guild: Wolf Queen series. If you have not read books one and two, you could start with the first book “Darkest Moon” so you won’t feel lost. If you want a richer reading experience with details on Eve’s friends, start with “Once Bitten” the very first book in the Shadow Guild: The Rebel series.

Like all of the authors previous works, this one is fast paced and action packed. There really is never a dull moment. Eve and Lachlan spend their time in this book racing against a clock to find answers to their questions and solutions to their problems while their fated mate status remains a slow burn to tease those of us who are romance fans. Some answers are found but more questions remain and a solution always feels just out of reach. It is definitely a nail biter and there is a cliffy, it is a series after all. Don’t fret. The final book will be released in May, far off enough to leave you aching but soon enough to keep the story fresh in your mind. As always, Hall’s world building is simply magical. Her historical references, the geography, the mythology. It is all wonderful.

  • Elaina Wells

Right now we are at the middle of Eve and Lachlan's adventure, and just like every single Linsey Hall book I read, I loved every second of Pack of Lies. The book begins with both Eve and Lachlan struggling with their separate issues--Eve's magic does not want to work, and Lachlan is slowly losing his battle against the Dark Moon curse. Now, they are both on a race against the clock to fix Eve's magic before it's too late. All the while fighting their growing attraction with each other. No pressure right?

One of my favorite parts about Linsey's books is that she incorporates places she studied as an archaeologist into her work. It makes for exciting adventures and the readers are able to go to places they never even dreamed of visiting. I'm hoping with book four that even more of our questions are answered. I can't wait to read it!

  • Catalina

This is def my favourite one from the series, unless Linsey writes another just as fantastic.

So, we finally have some answers! During the first two books, I jumped from one theory to another about Eve's shifter form, but at the end, Linsey surprised me!. And I really loved all that Scottish history behind some scenes and the descriptions were simply awesome, I could form the landscapes very well in my head.

But we still have some questions left: what's the final goal of the Maker? Why is Eve so important to him? What about the Seer's prophecy of Eve's death?and...

So, yeah. This is my fav so far.

  • Kristine

Book 3 in this series has Eve and Lachlan rushing against time trying to both find his brother and trying to find out what Eve is and who is after her. Lachlan and Eve are finally admitting to themselves that they are falling for each other but they both have reasons why this cannot happen. Lachlan falling prey to the Dark Moon curse, and Eve's prediction from the seer that she will die if she mates with Lachlan. Bummer that they are fated mates....

This book is also a very fast paced read/listen that has both groups of friends involved and trying to get to the bottom of the mystery. Some questions are answered, but then more arise. We get to see Lachlan showing more and more feelings for Eve - even with the additional potions he is taking. Eve on the other hand is dealing with a crazy psychopath who seems to be just one step ahead of her.

This is not a stand alone and I don't think it will make any sense if you haven't read the first two books. But, it seems as if we are getting down to the nitty gritty so I will be eagerly awaiting book 4.

  • Brooklyn Van Antwerp

    Pretty Good

I know I didn’t write a review for the 2nd book, but that’s only because I moved right onto the 3rd.
This series does have some really good action that keeps me interested, but I’m having a hard time making myself read more. I will end up reading the entire series because I want to know what happens, but I’m getting frustrated with the romance aspect.
Eve and Lachlan are fated mates. But for reasons out of their control, they can’t be together. I totally get that. But throughout the first 3 books they have this push and pull thing they have going on and it’s starting to get old.
I really do love the action in this series. There is also some mystery around Eve’s family history and what kind of wolf she really is. I’m interested in seeing where the author takes this story. Hopefully Eve and Lachlan will get their shit together. Fast.

  • Savannah

    Race against time!

Eve and Lachlan are in a race against time to figure out how save Eve before her magic tears her apart. All the while Lachlan is doing everything he can to fight the dark mood curse. We go on a whirlwind journey while they try to peice together clues to figure out what the Master wants and how to stop him. The Master is an interesting character. He's more powerful than they ever imagined. He can do things no one has ever seen before. Who is he? What is he? So many questions. I can't wait for the next book to find out! As always we learn a bit of history in this book. I'm going to be doing some more research. It's so interesting. I love it! Linsey does not disappoint! I highly recommend this series!

  • Lita

Another chapter in Eve and Lachlan's story. They're falling hard for each other in spite of their attempts to remain apart. More potions to keep Lachlan from succumbing to the Dark Moon curse as he tries to help Eve to find out what is going on with her. She's in a lot of pain and she's fading because she's literally coming apart inside. She needs to shift but can't. In the meantime, the Master is stealing moon stones and has a plan to capture Eve.

I can't say more without giving away spoilers, so that's my summary. I really loved this story. I found it to be exciting and I love the characters. While the appearances of other characters is most welcome, I wish they had more page time so they had more depth. Beyond that, it's great.

  • C. Erani Kole

    It was nice...

    3.5 for me

Duuuude. I low key live for the pull and tug of their relationship. They aren’t in love and don’t want to give in to their attraction just because the mating bond decrees it, and I love that challenge. It’s never really fun giving in to something the universe deems okay. It’s nice to KNOW you have a choice.

This was an adventure book with the people going to different places, which was fun and filled with activity. Not much on the progress of who she is exactly. Yes there’s history shown but nothing progressing forward, which I was hoping for. It was like little tip toes to the finish line than lengthy leaps.

It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t epic. It was lukewarm contentment with a sprinkle of excitement.
