An exciting fantasy full of thrilling action, mysterious magic, a terrible evil and sweet romance. I really enjoyed this new and exciting world. I liked the concept and the pace of the story. I loved Arell’s character and look forward to seeing where the journey goes from here.

An epic tale of war and magic, love and loss, good and evil, family and foe

Rise of the Tobian Princess is the first book in the Sword of Cho Nisi trilogy; a planned fantasy saga set in faraway lands in an age before technology. This is a tale of war and magic, love and loss, good and evil, family and foe.

The Kingdoms of Potamia and Cho Nisi are threatened by a malevolent magical entity. They must ally to fight it but when tragedy befalls the Cho Nisi King before a mission to support Potamian troops, can the alliance hold?

Erika, youngest of the Potamian princesses, is determined to go into battle alongside her brother to fight for the land of her people but her inexperienced actions trigger political upheaval and jeopardise the fragile alliance.

Arell, the new King of Cho Nisi, is forced into a role he didn’t want and is unprepared for. Can he get past the untimely death of his Father to rule his island of peaceful magic users fairly while maintaining an alliance with the Kingdom where his Father was slain?

The writing is beautifully descriptive, painting a clear picture for the reader and the world building is wonderful and complex. The array of characters and cultures grow as the story unfolds. I found myself invested in their journeys and lifestyles. I celebrated their successes and felt their losses.

There are battles, politics, magic, monsters and still within that there is love and family. I am very much looking forward to book two.

Prince Arell is the only son of the Cho Nisi’s king. His father’s death forces him to ascend to the throne – a responsibility he is not prepared for. Arell wants to learn the identity of the person responsible for his father’s demise. A beautiful yet reckless princess may provide him with the opportunity. Arell must ignore his heart to exact justice for his people. Can Arell learn to forgive Erika for her crime? What role does he have in the upcoming battle with the Vouchsaver?
Princess Erika Tobias is the youngest child of the Potamian king. She wants to fight alongside her brother to protect their kingdom from the Vouchsaver’s evil. However, Erika blunders in her first skirmish. Her mistake could threaten the alliance Potamia has with the Cho Nisi. Can Erika find a way to make reparation to the Cho Nisi’s people? Or will she be forced to give up on her beloved?
I feel that there were not enough scenes about Arell or the Cho Nisi people. I would have loved a little more exploration on the Cho Nisi’s culture and their magic system, unless the author plans to do so in future books. I understand and empathize with Arell’s trepidation about ascending the throne. He thought his father would rule longer than what he did. Arell took that for granted and shirked his heir’s duties to learn and observe. I like Arell’s dedication on becoming a good monarch. He had to learn by trial and error, but he insisted on learning his background.
Erika came off as too self-absorbed and selfish. I understand her need to prove herself, especially since women’s stations are different. I feel that she took things to the extremes or too far. I admire Erika’s determination to make amends to the Cho Nisi. She may be a princess, but that did not exempt her for making reparation.
RISE OF THE TOBIAN PRINCESS is the first book in D.L. Gardner’s fantasy romance series, SWORD OF CHO NISI. I know that first books always start out slow. They must set up and introduce the author’s unique world. However, certain parts felt like it dragged on and on without any real purpose. I commend the author on her worldbuilding skills. She did a wonderful job creating a world so different from others in the genre, especially the magic.

    31/2 out of 5 stars
Erika is the youngest daughter of the king . A warrior in her own right she does a fatal mistake during battle and kills the king of a allied island. She attempts to right what she did and falls in love with the prince .Who now has to decide if she lives or dies .All the while falling in love with her . And in the mean time her brother is captured and her father is failing . What is a girl to do when the survival of the whole island falls on her shoulders . Can they forget the bad blood between them long enough to save the islands they love so dearly .
There are quite a few characters in this book and I must say that the author really made each character complex . Erika is a sweet girl but she has the weight of the world on her head . She is tougher then she realizes and when push comes to shove she will do what is right even if it means her life .Prince Arell is pushed into a job he isn't ready for . He is a sweet guy who is under pressure but seems to come out the other side stronger and more reliant . There are so many supporting characters that help with the story and help with the main characters .
This is a book that you could get lost in . The story is a high fantasy romance with characters that are well written and complex . There are twists and turns through out the book that will have you laughing or on the edge of your seat , This book has the potential to be a great book but there are times in the book I felt it was bogged down with description a good going through to tone it back down the over describing. It could be an even better book . Over all i did enjoy this story and would like to see what the author does with these characters . So if you want a fun read check it out

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to access this book in advance, it doesn't affect my rating in anyway and all opinions are my own.

    3 stars
There's a lot of potential here for this to be a fantastic book, I enjoyed the overall story and the characters themselves. Erika is fantastic as is Kairos
However, I wouldn't call this a 'romance' as it all happens so quickly and I didn't feel much chemistry between the two main(-ish) characters. It was like love at first sight, not that there's anything wrong with that, it just could have been written better.
There was some character development but I feel a lot more could of been added to enhance the storytelling.

Saying that, if you want something different and enjoy POV stories, strong female characters and a genuinely interesting world please give this a go, you will be pleasantly surprised!

There's a good chance I'll read the next one

"So far the book was great in the sense of adventure, secrets and the whole war background BUT as a hopeless romantic, I was starting to get bored at 47%. I'm not the 'vanilla kind of girl', I need more than holding hands and kisses so yeah, I needed more. If you like fantasy and adventure this one is for you. If as me you crave for romance and almost burned my kindle scenes, well this is not for you. Again, I'm not saying the story was bad but too much detail, too much adventure and zero heat romance. Like I said, vainilla romances after the darkest stories I've read... I need the steam LOL. But there's the promise of more romance and I hope it will heat."

Ride of the Tobian Princess caught me in its grasp after only a couple pages. Mistakes happen quickly in the heat of battle, and Erika learns that quickly. This story is a high fantasy with giants, fantastically evil creatures and an cruel wizard with dastardly plans. The romance that blooms between the pages is one of sadness, but the truth brings all the cards onto the table. Erika and Arell learn many things of love and war, on their journey through the story, and the growth of the characters are what makes their romance so beautiful. I cannot wait to read the next book, the ending is one that leaves you wanting more!

An exciting tale of magic, loss, courage and redemption. The battle between good and evil comes in many forms and the king is trying to keep his subjects safe. His youngest daughter is a tomboy and goes with her brother to fight, this ends in the accidental death of a neighbour whose alliance is important, but she is beginning to learn maturity especially in the face of her older sisters finding love. What will her choices be for the future as she holds her own life and that of the kingdom in regard?

This author is new to me, but I will be reading more, for sure. This book has everything you could ask for in a good fantasy. You have a beautiful princess who commits an accident with horrific consequences. You have the handsome king who is really still a boy. Evil wizards, horrible monsters, and kingdoms to be saved round out this story quite well. The characters are well formed and ones that you grow to love as the story progresses. I look forward to reading on in this series to see if Erika and Arell finally get to tie the knot and bond their kingdoms as well.

    Good Story

This was a very good story. I recently read another author's fantasy and the difference was night and day. Dianne used words as a painter paints a picture. Her descriptions were clear enough to see the scene in your head. For instance, she wrote "...his bare chest a journal for the life at sea he lived..." . What a great way to describe the fisherman. The main characters had personality and life. Her world building is well thought out.
I look forward to reading the next books.

Erika is a princess who wants to be a fight like her brother. During a fight, she accidentally kills the allied nation king. She falls for his son and is afraid to tell him. Arell is in love with Erika but has to exile her when he discovers what she did. Can their love survive?

Sword of Cho Nisi is an entertaining story with a lot of action. The main storyline is excellent, and the subplots are almost as good. If you love this genre, then you will love this book. I found the book enjoyable and think I would like to read book 2 of the Rise of the Tobian Princess.

Thank you to Netgalley for my e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. I found Rise of the Tobian Princess to be a good mix of adventure and magic. I really enjoy adventure books with multiple POV since you can learn the characters more intimately. I found Erika to be a compelling character from the start and I liked her tomboy appeal for a princess. The story had a good pace with appropriate chapter length to keep the audience engaged and ready for the next character to take over. Despite an impressive, complex world-building, you're still interested to see how the story will unfold.
