XXX Historical Reviews

I'm not sure of the current status of this book. It has currently disappeared from Amazon and the title is unattractive and inaccurate - there is neither a mountain man nor a virgin in this story.

However, it was an enjoyable read. I'm sure there are historical inaccuracies here but it feels right to me. Maggie makes a strong yet sweet heroine who knows what she needs and isn't afraid to break societal rules to get it. James, the "scoundrel Duke" is charming and honourable and utterly devoted to Maggie. Lord Marshall is a suitably hateful villain and Maggie's and James' other family members feel right for their period and roles.

And the sex? As befits a story titled "XXX Historical", there is plenty of it, and it is rough and juicy and always joyful.

I will gladly read more from E.J. Layne in this oeuvre and if you enjoy sweet, spicy historical romance then this story is absolutely worth a look, should it become available again.

    Not Worth 📚Reading

    ADULT Historical Erotica?

This isn't historical, but I guess you could say it's erotica. I like ADULT historical romances and this is NOT a good example of either, really. The time period is all over the place and inaccurate.

Everything about the novella is like a cheap rip-off of a real book. I'm not sure what kind of person reads thus type of literature? on a regular basis, but it's not ME! I will be avoiding this author. If you like historical erotica, there are much much better novels around.

There is very little character development or actual story.

Fortunately, I didn't pay good money for this travesty . What a long title for a crappy little book.

Margaret is a recent widow. She was barely 18 years old when she was married to a man twice her age. During their short marriage, they tried numerous times to have a child but failed. With his passing within the last two weeks, Margaret, affectionally known as Maggie, comes up with a plan to have a child and keep her husband’s inheritance. Unfortunately, her brother-in-law has other plans and will stop at nothing to get his deceased brother’s estate. Duke James Percival has no right to approach Maggie due to his uncle swindling Maggie’s father out of their family vineyard and putting the entire family in the poor house. If he had known who Maggie was before he laid eyes on her, he might have told his heart to find love elsewhere. How can he win her over and get her to see his affections are true despite all the odds against them?

This novella is not for true historical romance or erotica enthusiasts as there is not much historical information given. There is no time frame for this story, titles are used sparingly, and proper peerage etiquette is not always utilized. The actions and behaviors of the characters in this story seem overly modern. Human anatomy is referred to by modern terms that I have never seen used in traditional historical romance or erotica novels. There is minimal dialogue in this super short novel and often the point of view switches character without much introduction or notification. Since the story is less than 100 pages on my e-reader, the events happen rather quickly, and I had some questions about things. This story indicated adult entertainment level love scenes; I felt I had read more kinky scenes in more traditional historical romance novels. The format of this story was not the best in my opinion either. Often there was no spacing between the end of one paragraph and the next. It may have been my e-reader. Overall, this story was a quick slightly humorous read. I would not label this a traditional historical erotica story, but more of a story set in a past time.

For what it is, this is not bad. Exactly as advertised, it is a steamy novella in which our heroine thinks she must get pregnant immediately to keep her very recently deceased husband's estate. She goes about it weirdly, but that is where the "steamy" comes in. Her plan succeeds, and she is pregnant, but it turns out there are complications.

The writing sounds as if they live in the 20th century, not the 19th, which is quite annoying. Even if it's just a little bit of fluff, one can make the vocabulary believable. The behavior of the characters is also not at all true to the times. I think it could have still been a good story with more attention to authenticity in those ways.

In writing the review a couple of days after I finished it, I couldn't remember much and did not care much about the characters.

  • DEBLEENA PODDAR

This book has a steamy romance.

It is set in the 19th century. The story revolves around a lady Magaret whose husband has recently died. Being a widow she is at a crisis as she must bear a heir to claim her share over her property. But unfortunately before his death her husband reveals that they can not have children as he is infertile. She must impregnate herself hook or crook to survive from the greedy clutches of her brother in law. That's where the steamy romance develops.

All the characters have an individuality of their own. The plot is quite simple and is divided into short chapters.

It's quite a fast paced book but at places I felt that events turned up out of the blue. The story to lacked the smooth rolling gait. Also the historical references aren't accurate.

So if one wishes to ignore the glitches and di e into a short steamy romance then this is it...

This is a quick, fast paced romance filled with some steamy scenes. The story is set in the 19th century and revolves around Lady Margaret, a widow. Becoming a recent widow has suddenly caused her life to turn upside down and she must frantically find a solution to her problems. She must quickly become pregnant or risk losing her home. She sets out to fix this and that's when the steamy scenes start.

The characters are interesting and rather well developed for such a quick read. The chapters are short and plot is rather simple.

A s a fan of historical romance novels, I found this book to be inaccurate with wording, manners of characters, and various details. If you're not a huge fan of historical novels, you might not notice or care.

I'd give the book a 3/5. If you want a quick, steamy book to read than this will fit the bill.

A steamy, historical inspired, enemies to lovers-type novel. At just over 100 pages it’s a very short read but with just enough detail and description to make it a quick and flirty read.

I’ll admit I did laugh at a few of the “sexual scenes” but it wasn’t too bad on the whole. A few instances of wording and phrases used which felt a little too modern and detracted from the historical experience but the whole plot was pretty good and simple enough to follow but still leave me wondering what happened next.

I cannot say that I enjoyed Maggie’s character very much towards the end and think the whole story could have used a stronger incentive and character motivations but on the whole, it was pretty well written.

This was a speedy read and had an intriguing setup. Lady Margaret's husband had died, leaving her without an heir. She's approached by a handsome stranger and has an anonymous night of love.

She finds herself pregnant with the heir she needs and is horrified to find out the handsome stranger is actually a Duke and an enemy to her family.

The Duke decides he wants Lady Margaret and their baby and sets out to reform his rakish reputation and woo her heart.

I really liked this book a lot. Forbidden love, family enemies, anonymous sex. It was an erotica novella and very steamy from the first chapter. This book but could have easily gone on another 100 pages and been just as interesting. This author shows a lot of promise, and I am curious to see what she writes next.

This book was referred to as an Erotic, historical book. I read romance all the time. From sweet clean to dark, erotic and everything in between. In my opinion, this author needs to invest in a proof reader and a fact checker. Too many terms were not consistent with the period. Also, zippers weren't around yet, nor a cut tire...both referenced. I enjoy any book that has a decent story and is well written. This book, I am sorry to say did not deliver either. Just call it kinky sex. That is really all it is.

XXX Historical has a very interesting story line. From start to finish it will keep you intrigued and keep you on your toes guessing and wanting more; and there lies the problem.

The wanting more. More of a backstory, more character development, just more. It was well written at times and other times it switches character point of views with no definitive breaks.

Overall, the story has great potential and is a very quick read.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This was a super quick, enjoyable read. The characters weren't really fully developed and I didn't learn a lot about them, but as breif as it was, that's understandable. It was short, fun and had a little heat. My biggest con would be that chapter 9 shouldn't have been a chapter, but rather the epilogue.

  • Catherine Leigh

It was a good short story. It’s the first time I read a short historical romance, so it took a little getting used to the pace of the story.
I liked the characters Maggie and James, it’s got some good steamy scenes and I enjoyed the characters inner monologue.
Overall a good, easy to read book.

    1 star for the writing
    3 stars for the story
Hardly the XXX erotica story this professing to be.
A little research would have gone a long way to clean up the contemporary language.

XXX Historical was definitely an entertaining, steamy read. Loved the characters Margaret and James. I loved the story. I received an ARC for my honest opinion from BookSirens.

Viscountess Lady Margaret Addington Marshall lost her husband recently. He left her the entire estate and his brother wanted it. She had to get pregnant right away or she would lose it. So, she was looking for a stranger.
    She was desperate.
Duke James Percival had been out that night and was looking for company. He saw her and wanted her, but he thought she was a harlot. They did not exchange names. The problem was that his family and her family wanted nothing to do with each other.
It was a happy story but does have some errors in the tale. But it is still smooth, easy to read, and interesting.
It is a novella and is not very long, but it was engaging. I liked it even though I have never read her work before.
It would be worth trying another one of her books.
I received this ARC from Book Sirens and voluntarily reviewed it.

    In need of an heir

If you don’t mind a book that’s has enough historical inaccuracies that will make your teeth grind and for you to visibly shudder, then by all means give it a go. I also found it be a little disjointed in places, you jumped from one scene to a completely different one with no warning

I did enjoyed the characters chemistry though and they were a cute couple.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I just hope the author fixes the discrepancies to make this a really great story.

A quick, steamy read. I enjoyed the story, although it was confusing at times as far as time period goes. It seemed a lot more modern than historical.
