The job felt wrong from the start.

The sheriff of Jericho offered Flint the bounty, but the contract originated from a murkier source—the Duskfinders, a secret society with ties to the Occult. Still, Flint accepted. Hunting bounties defined him. His reputation distracted bigots from the unique shape of his good eye and gawkers from the ocular implant that replaced the other. Most everyone figured Flint was just another badass in the sheriff's posse of dubious freaks, but he wasn’t beholden to that crew. He was a loner. Set his own path.

Autonomy ain’t worth a damn, though, when a plan goes straight to hell, when a split-second decision triggers an avalanche of trouble. Now, as the lawman who hired him spirals into madness and a paranormal stalker demands penance, Flint’s shame and guilt will force him to make a choice: run or fight.

Death of a Bounty Hunter draws intriguing characters into a plot that captivates readers with twists and turns all the way up to its deadly conclusion. A mashup of dark fantasy, steampunk, and weird western genres, it earned a semifinalist spot in ScreenCraft’s Cinematic Book Competition.

This is a can’t-miss, epic tale full of heart and grit from Amazon top-selling authors Jay Sherer and Nathan Scheck.

Death of a Bounty Hunter: A Dark Fantasy Western Reviews

Wow, what a fun and interesting ride this was! Has all the elements for a successful character driven story which pulls you along and keeps you there. Unique and unforgettable characters. I loved this book and hope the authors have a series in mind. If they do, I'm there.

An enjoyeble story of Steampunk, cowboys, supernatural and a splash of magic, told from the point of views of several characters.

I have to admit that when the story ended, I wanted to read more. Hopefully there will be a second book.

Thank you to the author for sharing the full theatrical cast audio version of the book! I was asked to share an unbiased opinion of the book for my copy.

I enjoyed this. Probably a 4.25 stars rounded down. My reasoning for not going full 5 stars was because in some ways it almost seemed like a novella. I could have used more! I like the western fantasy element. The characters were good and the full cast audio version was well done. Sometimes audiobooks can be overproduced (looking at you Star Wars) but this one really did fit the story well.

I wasn't sure what to expect because there are multiple genres all colliding together. Is it a western? Yep. Is it fantasy? Sure 'nuff. Is it dystopian? You got it. Can I get some steampunk? Totally. The author did a bang up job getting these all to work together in a believable way that had me into it.

    Spoiler alert

I received a copy of this for free as a First Read through Goodreads.

This was a strange and intriguing read that shows a lot of potential for the authors. Set in a weird steam punk-esque Wild West with magic—and hints of it being post apocalyptic—I found myself drawn into the world but also sometimes confused. For instance, the authors did a great job of setting the scene and explaining the world as the book progressed, something that can be very difficult. Too often authors feel the need to provide unnecessary and awkward exposition, or drop you into the world in a way that is incomprehensible. These authors provided explanation as the story progressed, slowly revealing the world as needed. But the mechanic of how the protagonist changes course and the final battle scene were a little incomprehensible (not saying more so as not to provide spoilers). These elements came out of left field and left me with lots of questions, not in a good way.

For a first novel, I thought the writing was good, the characters had some depth, and the plot—though relatively predictable—was fun.

It's been a while since I read this but I realized I had never done the review. This is not my normal genre of books I enjoy reading, but a good friend is one of the author's. It's a quick read because it's really fast paced. Interesting plot. Check it out and support an up and coming author/storyteller.

Amazing read that is pushing me to love the western genre even more. Such a great story, filled with unexpected easter eggs. Both the pro an ant were extremely relatable, and I found myself sympathizing with both sides of the coin. Very much one of those books I could not afford to put down. I cannot wait to read more from these amazing authors!

Well written character-driven steampunk story set in a fantastic world I’d love to see explored further. Checks all the boxes of an engaging spaghetti western with added supernatural ingredients. The visuals are so well detailed I felt like I had watched a movie in a state-of-the-art IMAX theater.

This book reads more like a movie script than a novel, which was a refreshing change of pace. Because of this, the character development, plot, tone, emotion, world building, etc. are largely dialogue driven—and it all works brilliantly. I would love to see this story play out on a TV screen someday, but in the meantime, I enjoyed being removed from the typical literary style of most novels and immersed in a complex, vibrant, fantastical world with meaty themes, existential questions, and morally ambiguous characters. Before Death of a Bounty Hunter, I didn't know supernatural steampunk Westerns were a genre, but now I do, and I'm glad for it!
