All I wanted to do was live my life in peace. Maybe get a cat, expand my spice farm. Really anything that doesn’t involve going on a quest where an orc might rip my face off. But they say the Goddess has favorites. If so, I’m clearly not one of them.

After saving the demon Fallon in a wine-drunk stupor, all he wanted to do was kill an evil witch enslaving his people.

I mean, I get it. Don't get me wrong. But he's dragging me along for the ride, and I'm kind of peeved about it. On the bright side, he keeps burning off his shirt.

I'm sorry? A fantasy romcom that is ACTUALLY funny and has a Black woman lead? And there's buckets of nachos? And a lesbian centaur?

Give me a million books in this series please. This author is an insta-buy for me now.

  • Billie Yankie

Cinnamon is relatable AF. Fallon is a total dreamboat. The plot is well-constructed. And the smut had both quality and quantity. 4.50/5 ⭐ 3.75/5🌶 (it was well written and true to the characters, but I would have liked a little bit more filth).
There are so many good things that make this book a wonderful read!
Cinnamon's relationship with her brothers? Peak sibling energy.
Fallon's mix of golden-retriever and murderous psycho energy is immaculate.
The profanities? "Asswhooping alligators" is only one of my favourites.
The bratty energy coming off both of them is too much to handle sometimes, but the banter is top-notch.

Everything about this book looks like SO much damn fun!!!! 😍

Y’all! Please pick this book up. Honestly, I’m known more so for reading contemporary romance, but I heard so many good things about this one that I had to give it a try! It’s not only cute, but hilarious and steamy. We follow a main character by the name of Cinnamon after she casually runs into a demon after a night out. After attempting to attack her, he reveals that the goddess they worship is really evil and has made all of the demons under her power lose control. They then set off on an adventure to destroy said goddess and free those who have been bound to her. This book was not only adventurous, but contained the cutest romance ever. I could not get enough of Cinnamon and Fallon. They couldn’t get enough of each other no matter how much they tried to deny it at first. I wish there was a little more steam, but to be honest this was a great start to the beginning of the series. The world building was great as was the character development which got me more excited to see even more romances in this world play out. If you’re a fan of fantasy romance, I would recommend checking this one out.

Ah hell. This is up there with some of the cutest shit I’ve read.

Where do I even start? There were so many different elements that made this story so great to read.

Cinnamon? (Yes, that's actually her name!) Adorable. Fallon, her-demon-enemy-turned-husband? Even more adorable. 🥹

She’s someone that is not interested in adventure whatsoever. She’s only interested in living that peaceful, stress-free, boring life.

    Relatable. ✌🏾

But what do you know? On an adventure she goes.

It was fantastical, it had adventure, great side characters, steam😮‍💨, magic and best of all? It had me laughing out loud.

I love what Kimberly Lemming has done here. It was unique, well-written, and well developed. I had such a great time reading this! I hope we get so much more in this series!

okay when i first went into this book i tioyght it was going to be a cutiesy fantasy romance and boy was a i wrong! this was fun and honestly this had more plot in less than 200 pages than books that are 500+. the book was hilarious and the romance? oh man the demon was giving demon combined with klaus from tv. not to mention that smut!! this was a pleasant surprise and everything i’ve been looking for. please don’t let the corny, long title deter you from reading this.

I was genuinely looking forward to this. That cover had me immediately in love. Unfortunately it didn't quite live up to my hopes :/

🍂 The language is very modern despite it being fantasy. Which isn't inherently bad, it can actually be fun and nice. Buuuut this was just a little too over the top for me. It was less fun and more "omg I'm so random and quirky" vibe for me.

"I don't know man, seems kind of suss."

🍂 Jokes over sincerity. I felt like some of the moments that needed tension and sincerity were undercut but jokes and giggling.

🍂 Lampshading. So in one scene they're attacked by rapist bandits, and:
Oh. Bandit rapists. How cliche. I couldn't even pretend to be surprised. Every adventure book I've ever read had at least one scene where the hero dashingly defeats a group of bandits.

Calling attention to the cliche, is not subverting it. Honestly, if you're gonna do a cliche at least be sincere about it. A cliche isn't inherently bad, it depends on the usage. This meta-awareness with no subversion didn't work for me.

    🍂 The burning city:

    🍂 Dub-con:

🍂 Maledom. I am not a fan. And honestly, had I know this was maledom I wouldn't have picked up the book. It wasn't even listed as BDSM on the GR shelves, so I had legit no clue. This might be a plus for someone else, tho!

🍂 Fallon was... kind of a bad character? And I don't mean morally. Don't give a shit about that. He just felt inconsistent and over-powered.

🍂 Pacing issues in the romance. They fell in love so fucking quick to me. Especially Fallon. And I kept wondering why. First he says it's because Cin is brave, and he's never met any women like her. Except... this is a fantasy world where women go out fighting demons (misguided, yes) on the regular. Doesn't mean that there are a lot of badass, brave women? What made Cin different. I couldn't figure it out. Until we learn that But that makes me question why Fallon would behave the way he did towards her in the beginning.

🍂 The "heroes" were done dirty. So the Goddess chooses a party of people to go fight demons every 15 years. This happens to be one of them. We know nothing about them, except, that Cin dislikes one of them for being demanding and entitled. We don't hear about the rest of the "heroes" until the very end. And the way it was handeled was so disappointing to me.
Cin doesn't seem to care about people around her at all, except in some moments she does??? And for the life of me I can't figure out her internal logic. Fallon doesn't give a shit, so that's just in character for him. It's because Cin seems to be intended to be the "good one" between the two that I don't get it.

    🍂 The epilogue:

    Aaaaanyways, some praise:
🍂 I liked the family dynamic in the beginning

🍂 Some of the jokes were legit funny

I did this as buddy read and I think that made reading this a more fun experience. My buddy also mentioned how much more impactful it might've been, if we got some POVs from the "heroes" along the way. It would've built the tension of these two forces meeting, would've shown how the conflicted looked from their sides. Oh well, that was not to be.

Final rating: 2 stars. Not awful, just too many annoyances for me to like it.

    FUN FUN FUN!!!

I went into this not expecting much, but then I found myself DEVOURING IT!!! ITS AMAZING!

Kimberly Lemming is a new-to-me author that I have just fallen in love with and will be reading every single book published by her!

The writing is sooo easy to read and incredibly witty. Very lighthearted read with wonderful characters, and the pacing was great! It didn’t feel rushed, and it wasn’t slow; It was the perfect pace for the plot (and the romance!).

Their conversations reminded me of texts between my friends and me, and I was laughing so much! I haven’t laughed this much reading a book in a while! I took screenshots of my highlights and sent them to my friends because they’re so funny and such a mood!!

The FMC’s name is Cinnamon, which I ADORED!! All her siblings' names too! Cumin, Chili, and Cinnamon! So clever too because they are spicer farmers!

Cin is so fun, intelligent, and a strong woman. I LOVED HER SO MUCH! She is so relatable! This book is a single POV (Cin’s POV); honestly, I didn’t mind because her POV is the best. I wasn’t thinking about Fallon’s POV because I didn’t think we needed it. We got so much from Cin’s POV!

Fallon…FALLON!!!!! The beautiful shifter/ dragon! He was so protective of her, he was like WHO DID THIS TO YOU, and I’LL KILL WHOEVER TOUCHES YOU. UGHH, i love a protective mmc!

The banter between Cin and Fallon was incredible! I loved their interactions, especially because of the forced proximity.

Overall, I think this is a great book, a mix of lighthearted romcom, a fun quest, and SPICE!! I would definitely recommend this!

I can’t wait to read the second book!

    read if you like:

    → Monster Romance
    → Enemies-to-Lovers (kinda!)
    → Forced Proximity
    → He Falls First
    → open-door romance, steamy

  • Bethany (Beautifully Bookish Bethany)

Rom-com meets fantasy romance with a tongue-in-cheek/quirky sense of humor and a side of BDSM? That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon is mostly a delightful romp following a spice trader named Cinnamon who (eponymously) gets drunk and saves a demon before getting pulled into an adventuring quest with a hot demon who wants to make her his wife.

I found it to be genuinely funny and got such a kick out of things like the fact that Cinnamon's nickname is Cin (I mean, Sin falls for a demon? lol) and that she has a secret snack pocked in her skirts. This DOES also get pretty steamy and as the content warnings let you know at the beginning there is some dubious consent and BDSM elements. Not necessarily my favorite kind of steamy romance, but I enjoyed the rest of the book so much I wasn't too bothered by it. And if that's your thing, all the better. I will say that while there are several explicit scenes, there is also a lot of plot and character development so this is much more than just monster erotica. (not that there is anything wrong with monster erotica, I just want to set expectations!) I would definitely read more from this author in the future.

3.5 stars - This was so campy and cute! The writing/pacing was a little choppy, but the overall story, world, and characters were just a great time, and I'm looking forward to continuing in the series

“Last night, you demanded we bring you cheese and then stated that you were the cheese queen.”

    Tropes you will find:
    📚 Touch her and d*e
    📚 Quest
📚 Enemies to lovers (sort of)
    📚 Forced proximity
    📚 Delicious Banter
📚 Found family and real family
    📚 Praise k*nk

Well this was just absolutely everything. And I mean EVERYTHING!

First, let’s talk about Cin - given the first line of the story was about her drunk and wanting cheese, I knew I’d connect with her. I just didn’t realise how much I’d connect with her. And it wasn't just her love of cheese, snacks and wine. She was very much content with a quiet life and that resonates with me so much. She did, however, end up being such an unintentional bad ass though.

Fallon, sweet demon daddy. A terribly vicious side (hello, demon!) but also a heart of gold and probably one of the sweetest MMCs I’ve ever read!

The banter, the adventure, the spice, the real and found family.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect going into this but it was a hell of a ride. I had such a fantastic time!

I highlighted so much of this it was so dang difficult to pick a quote!!

I can’t wait dive into more of Kimberly’s writing!

I really wanted to like this but modern language/slang in my high fantasy is a huge pet peeve of mine. No, I'm not looking for everything to sound like Tolkien, but unless it's urban fantasy, I need a certain cadance that takes me out of the mundane.

i have not been so baffled by the positive reception of a book for a long time, but here we are.

the time i got drunk and saved a demon is a fantasy romantic comedy. based on this combo of genres, i thought i would be walking into a work where there's a blend of development of a romantic relationship between characters with a humorous flair immersed in a fantasy setting. there's a black female lead in a monster fucker? let's go! unfortunately, all elements of this are handled on a continuum of poorly to terribly.

    fantasy:
no one actually lives in this world. the worldbuilding is on the same level of actors standing in front of a green screen for all the background to be fill in later. this book's plot has cinnamon finding out the goddess that her people worship is a false god and demons aren't actually evil and she sets out with one, fallon, to take her down. the entire system of faith that guides this world has been thrown off its axis. what should our characters do? struggle with their new view of the world and old belief that have guided them for so long?

hell no, cinnamon has very little reaction to this beyond some little quips before she's off with fallon. as they tell more humans, they too have very little reaction to this and also move forward with ease. the characters we follow are just so happen to be either demons, who have been enslaved and murdered a lot so no obligation to follow anything here, or humans who aren't devout despite talking about going to the temples frequently. the fantasy element could have been just through the monsters, but the 'we have to kill not!god' is the primary framing and i have never seen someone so disinterested into diving into this despite making the deliberate choice of centralizing it.

    romance/characterization:
cinnamon and fallon are neither compelling as individual characters nor as a romantic pair. there's no emotional connection between them so later tentpole moments such as fallon going on a murderous rampage when she's hurt do not hit at all. there is no tension in their relationship as the narrative does its best to undercut this with self-aware almost turns to the camera about cliches or many convenient resolutions (in the afterglow, cinnamon freaks out about getting knocked up, but never fear my dear, fallon drew a birth control rune on himself right before it happened, off-screen).

part of the appeal with this couple (allegedly) is that cinnamon is fallon's morality chain, but that is also very shoddy. cinnamon tells fallon he's not allowed to kill people unless they're really terrible such as slavers and rapists. but it is a flippant command, because she just does not care when he murders an entire village that theoretically includes innocents. she doesn't care when he swipes the head off someone who's an antagonist, but rightfully angry at her when she murders his fellow goddess warrior companion (after saying she would not kill a fellow human a line before) that she was just peacefully trying to take down. in universe, they are the villain protagonists, but there's just no work done to explore this beyond putting them in the role.

the sex scenes are middling at best that i can't even agree with someone who said this is more erotica than romance. cinnamon's discovery that she has a pain kink reads like a bandaid has been slapped on due to the author realizing an earlier 'no means yes' scene is actually dubcon . fallon goes on monologues about all the wicked nasty things he'll do to her and i'm just whispering if you don't eat her pussy already, jesus god. as there's no atmosphere with the world, there's no tension or buildup with the sex scenes, they're just as exposition heavy and move on as the rest of the book.

    comedy:
the humor in this story is completely tiktok based. i have no issue with modern language being used, but i realized it's here to mimic how people use sounds on tiktok for a user's own unique video. a notable example early on is fallon fancying up 'aren't you tired of being nice? don't you want to go apeshit?' to convince cinnamon to kill some slavers/rapists. every joke is set up like this in what i suspect is an attempt to recreate scenes on the platform. i can see why it did numbers on booktok. the one time i came close to a chuckle was 93% of my way through the book and that joke wasn't viral trend based so maybe lemming can be funny. the use of modern language here is only meant to show how plugged into social media you are rather than an integral element of the setting. it highlights shortcomings of the world building and actually working with the genre chosen.

in the author's note, lemming states that this is the first book she has ever written and i think that's very obvious. i was looking forward to this since i think it's neat that more black women are writing fantasy romance and monster romances as well (even if this is also just women fucking more cosmetically enhanced humans/shifters, baby steps and status quo. but that's an issue with the genre as it exists now, not unique to this book). however, light hearted and comedic should not mean shallow and i question if that's even an accurate descriptor as there's heavy stuff dropped in here (false religion! slavery! systemic killing!), but it's without a care and lemming quickly disengages with it after introducing it. i think the sequel will be more of the same especially as lemming changed the title of the sequel as a swipe to some poorly articulated modern language complaints. fortunately for her, she has her support as shown by the average rating here, so she'll do just fine. brie can have her fun with her extremely pale boy werewolf.

5.26 - i'm going to be back later with an itemized list of thirty years of disagreements ('sweet jesus,' you say. 'a hamilton reference in 2022?' when aht aht aht, there are unfortunately lyric drops in this story, we're on even footing here!) but this is my worst read of the year so far. which means it's surpassed katee robert's the dragon's bride. why are my dragons taking a beating this year, what have they done to y'all?

I’m kicking myself for not reading this sooner. It’s cute, and spicy, and I loved every minute of it!

I wish it were a bit longer so the plot didn’t feel so rushed, but that’s a small criticism. The narration for the audiobook made up for it - sooo well done!

    Romance: 💞💞💞💞

Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥🔥
    Humor: Yes! A ton!
Perspective: first person from the heroine's point of view (I feel like I got the hero's perspective without really getting in his head? It was nicely done!)

(These are all personal preference on a scale of 1-5 (yours ratings may vary depending what gives you feels and how you prefer you sex scenes written, etc) except the Steam Scale which follows our chart from
    A Love Less Ordinary )

    Basic plot:
Cin finds out their town’s “goddess” has been fooling all the humans into guarding her phylactery. She goes on an adventure with the demon Fallon to take her down.

Give this a try if you want:
    - Fantasy romance with a historical feel – carts with horses, no modern technology but modern dialogue. Various species introduced
    - Mid to high steam for a novella, though maybe a touch of a slow burn feel - 3 full scenes but all after 50%
    - Great mix of sexual tension, dialogue, and action
    - Road trip – hero and heroine leave the heroine’s hometown to find 4 cups to destroy

    Ages:
    - Heroine is 24, hero is 124 (haha)

    My thoughts:
This book was just so friggen adorable! And fun! And ridiculous but hot and I couldn’t put it down. Fallen was a bit conceited and had alpha tendancies but also absolutely focused on taking care of and protecting his heroine. I loved that he called her ‘rabbit’, I just thought it was so cute. Ugh I love him so much. SO MUCH!!!! And Cin didn’t need anyone to take care of her – she is BA and strong and took care of business and I adored that. But them together is just perfection.

I just loved this story so much. Some of it may have been a touch much, but it was easy for me to let it go. The tension for me was perfect, the characters were just fun, I was laughing out loud and I just fell in love with them. I will absolutely be reading more from this author.

(And I am going through all the things I have highlighted and it’s making me laugh and making my heart dance and now I just want to read the whole thing over again)

did this book just make me a fantasy romance girlie?? perhaps

  • Romance Rehab

This book is pure, sexy, dirty joy. Here's the scoop:

Plot Overview: Cin gets drunk and happens upon a demon, and accidently saves him from the witch who is enslaving him and his people. He then forces her to go on a quest with him to save all the other demons from said witch. Hilarity, sexy times, and romance ensue.

Trope bingo: fantasy romance, human/demon romance, black woman/white man (er, demon) romance, opposites attract, enemies to lovers, forced proximity

I struggle with fantasy romance. The world building can get complicated (as we've discussed, my attention span is super short) and it can be VERY dark and angsty. But THIS romance had just the right balance of interesting world building, intriguing characters, and laugh-out-loud hilarity to keep my attention from page one. I read the whole book in one sitting, which I almost never do. I just couldn't put it down, though! I just HAD to know what was going to happen with Cin and Fallon and their wacky band of new friends.

The first thing you have to know is that this book is irreverent and light-hearted and hilariously snarky. If you're looking for Game of Thrones levels of angst and complex plotting and Lord of the Rings levels of setting descriptions/world building, this one probably isn't for you. But if you're a fan of Isabel Jordan, MaryJanice Davidson, and Robyn Peterman (which I AM), then Kimberly Lemming is definitely an author you should watch. Lord knows I'LL be watching.

The book is told exclusively from Cin's perspective, which I'm not usually a fan of, but in this instance, it worked beautifully. Cin is smart, braver than she realizes--and for all her snarkiness, she's a tenderhearted person who isn't afraid to stand up for human (er, demon) rights and equality. Fallon is appropriately dark, scary, and smitten, but his character takes a back seat to Cin, and that's A-OK with me.

The secondary characters are absolutely delightful, and I fervently hope that every last human and demon in the book gets their own story. (Please and thank you to the author)

Long-story-short, my only complaint about this book is that it's a debut effort and I now have to wait for this delightfully talented author to finish and publish more books. If there were 10 books in this series, I would've done a happy dance around my house and probably startled my poor dogs, so...maybe it's best that this IS a debut effort. Hmmm...something to ponder...

Anyhoo, this book is highly worth a read if you like fantasy romance with a heaping helping of hilariously snarky banter and smoking-hot sexy times.

Omg, loved this little hidden gem!!! I laughed my way through this book, just absolutely fucking delighted! Cinnamon is a spice farmer, in case you couldn’t tell from her name. She runs into Fallon, a demon, on her way home one night when she’s drunk as a skunk, and he, well…tries to kill her. When he comes to his senses, he reveals that he and every other demon on earth are under the spell of a false goddess named Myva, who has fooled humanity for years. Fallon forces Cinnamon to help him destroy the false goddess, one temple at a time.

They go on a quest, and shortly on Fallon reveals that he wants to make Cinnamon his wife. Cin, or course, balks. They collect a ragtag group of humans and demons to help them on their quest, and hilarity and lots of fighting ensue. While I cackled through most of this book, Fallon was a big star for me, both with his sweetness and his hot (literally) mouth. Loved these two, I can’t wait to read more by this author! Also, LOVED the fact that this mythical world had some fun Louisiana roots…oh my filé powder!!! Lol

    It’s…it’s over? 🥺

Bah! I adored this like crazy. It was short, sweet, fast-paced, and hilarious.

It was the perfect light-hearted read to improve anyone's day. The humor was great, the fierceness and strength of all the women in this book was amazing, and I couldn’t put it down.

This did move very fast, and even though it was action packed, nothing dragged on or felt like there were more Q’s than A’s. It felt perfect how seamless everything went. There was no unnecessary drama! Cinnamon was a FMC I could read about every single day and never get bored. I need more of her in novels, please and thank you.

The relationships were everything: Cin’s family was gold, her friends are gold, her demon dragon was gold…🔥
