Kevin Was Bees (Speculative Fiction by David F. Shultz: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Short Stories Book 3) Reviews

This was one of the more interesting short stories that I've read in 2021. The premise being that a computer took someone's consciousness and put it into several beehives as a sort of computing matrix. Curious indeed. It was peculiar how the narrative shifts in and out of consciousness and is divided as different factions of bees take control or rebel against each other. I enjoyed the puns but the writer probably could have done a bit more research about beekeeping before finishing this short story, as there are many facts that seem a bit off (drones don't have stingers). The ending fell a bit flat too, with an awkward passage that immediately rated this story more for adults. Still, a very creative approach to narration when the narrator's conscious cohesion is compromised.

I will probably read more of his short fiction, out of curiosity.

What a weird, fun, whimsical, and somewhat poignant romp. I was not ready for 'Kevin Was Bees', but by the second page I was hooked! It's a quick read, with a really compelling and unique setup. Rarely do I find short stories that I know I'm going to read again, and this is one of them. Loved it!
