Magnificent Mabel and the Very Important Witch (Magnificent Mabel, #5) Reviews

Although this is the 5th book in the series this is the first one we've read. It contains three stand alone stories and are a great length for us just before bedtime. The text is of a generous size so ideal for those developing their confidence in reading. There's a good level of illustrations to help bridge that gap between picture books and chapter books.
Floss loves that she recognises lots of the words and can read some sentences on her own. The vocabulary isn't incredibly adventurous but I believe that's intentional to ensure this is a book that helps children move into more independent reading. However, there were enough snippets of new vocabulary for us to discuss and keep things interesting such as 'boasty' and 'menace'.
At the start, I found some of the sentences a little long which made the read-aloud a little clumsy. However, you quickly get used to the abrupt changes of sentence length and realise it's very much the personality of the feisty, no nonsense Mabel! As you continue to read more of the stories you anticipate her rambles and laugh at her short retorts. She's not afraid to say exactly what she thinks. My daughter Floss loves her mischievous ways and knows very well that Mabel's 'accidents' are all too intentional; I only hope Floss doesn't start getting ideas as I could be in serious trouble ahead!
A quick giggle of a read together or an ideal book for those becoming more independent in their reading.
