One evening, the Durrell's are upset by sudden arrival of a wounded stranger Jasper Benham, which causes turmoil and disorder at the old Stonehanger, revealing some things from old Durrell's past. The suspenseful situation makes everyone doubt everything and so begin the spy games.

    This was one of the best books I've read this year. What a swashbuckler!

    And even though I'm reviewing this super late, and don't remember the characters' names, I remember the plot and how much I loved this.

    Basically, this is the story of a man and his daughter who live in an old stone house that all the villagers say is cursed, haunted, and refuse to go near it. The man himself is old, tired and dissilusioned. But his daughter is young and full of life, and she remembers when her father was different, before they came to the house of stone. When a stranger drops in on them one night, she finds an added spark to life, and sees another side to her beloved father.

    That man who drops in on them is one of the many men whose job it is train men for the upcoming attack from Napoleon. He suspects that the stone house on a hill is haunted by sometimg more than ghosts, and feels sure that if he could penetrait it's walls he would find the secret of their hostile master and reveal a ring of spies working for Napoleon.

    But will he dare reveal it, knowing that in doing so he could lose the sweet girl who inhabits the stone house? Is she on his side, or is she only playing him up?


    I loved this, it had pretty much everything, daring escapes, a romantic thread, a swashbuckling hero and a heroine well worth her mettle. I loved it. And I espesially loved the relationship between the hero and his best friend, you could tell they understood each other well, and knew what the others would do in a scrape.
