Pearly Woe is a worrier. She worries about everything, especially that she’ll never be brave enough to become a member of the top-secret group of stealth adventurers – The Adventurologists’ Guild. Pearly also has a special talent – she can talk to animals. Her favourite animal to talk to is her pet pig, called Pig. But with her parents missing, Pig pig-napped and Pearly a stowaway on an icebreaker heading for Antarctica, Pearly’s worries just got REAL.
Pearly and Pig and the Great Hairy Beast Reviews

Absolutely loved this fun, action-packed adventure story set in Antarctica. Short, fast paced chapters make this an excellent read aloud choice for middle primary. Pleased to see there is a sequel as well.

This is a fast-paced, action-adventure tale for young readers. 10-year-old Pearly is concerned after receiving a strange phone call from her parents. They belong to The Adventurologists Guild, a top-secret group. She eventually works out that they need help. After boarding a ship where she believes her parents are being held against their will, bound for Antarctica, she realises that they are not there and she becomes the one in trouble. Pearly has a wonderful gift of being able to understand and communicate with her pet pig, who is caught and bundled unconscious onto the ship. How will this young adventurer solve what is happening? Who is on the ship and what do they want with Pig? It's something to do with a great hairy beast that is believed to dwell in the icy landscape-a creature her parents would have liked to prove existed as part of their secret activities. Whilst Pearl is a worrier, she bravely steps into the frame and exhibits newfound bravery and nerve, doing what she can to find her parents. Along the way, she uncovers what is really happening at the hands of one who will stop at nothing to achieve their own ends. Plucky Pearly is likely to become a new favourite protagonist among the Junior Fiction readership set.

This book was OK - but disappointed me a bit. I think I just came in with stratospheric expectations because I have loved Sue Whiting's other books so much.
There is still a lot of fun to be had here. An extremely bright, yet self-doubting young heroine, who learns resilience. A semi-talking animal sidekick. A mystery to be solved and an Antarctic adventure! It is solid, but overall it just felt a bit haphazard for me & I didn't feel sufficiently invested in what happened to the characters.
I will get some of my young readers in the Library to read it and gauge how they respond. -
Would you like to be an adventurer? Pearly Woe would like nothing more than join her parents as Adventurologists. Pearly is in training and is talented with languages and even understanding their special pet Pig. Why is Pig special? He has a super snooper. So super in fact that someone famous has come looking for him.
This person encounters Pearly’s parents on the way to find Pig, and they refuse to sell him to her. Things go terribly wrong from there and Pearly receives some cryptic messages from her Mum and Dad. Pearly is a chronic worrier and while she’s worrying, Pig is in danger. As she tries to save him she suddenly understands her parent’s messages. They were saying HELP!
Now Pearly knows she must save her parents, Pig and now herself too. She and Pig are on board a boat to Antarctica with an evil woman in charge. Pearly can’t understand why this woman needs Pig, but she does know it’s not for anything good.
Again, Pearly begins to worry, imagining how everything and anything can go wrong while she is trying to save her family. She must break through her wall of worries and leap into action. If only it was that easy!
A wannabe adventurer, a kidnap, pignap, penguins and a polar bear. A Great Hairy Beast and a dastardly villain to outwit. What does this impeccably dressed and made-up woman want Pig for? Why does she have a photographer follow her everywhere, even onto the ice? And why oh why does she need so much lipstick!
Pearly Woe is a likeable character who not only has all this to contend with, she is her own worst enemy. Putting her debilitating worries and wild imagination aside to get the job done is the hardest thing of all.
A fast-paced adventure for younger middle-grade or tween readers. -
This was an absolute delight to read and is a great introduction into chapter books for young children. Pearly is a beautiful leading character who takes ahold of her worries and finds a way to get past them in order to help others out. Filled with mystery, adventure and a very cute, all in all it is a must read!
