Scott has been in love with Preston for years, but the man is straight, and he was married. And now that Preston is divorced, that doesn't mean he is any more available.
The more Preston tries to ignore his attraction, however, the more he thinks about it. Finding himself alone at the office one night with Scott, he finally surrenders to his urges. Afterward, Scott wants to talk about what happened, but Preston doesn't want to analyze it, still certain he couldn't prefer men. When Preston suggests to the openly gay man that they keep things between them secret, however, the situation comes to a head.
Both men are forced to make difficult decisions, but will their choices tear them apart forever?

I couldn't wait to read this book! As soon as it was available I bought it and immediately read it. I wasn't disappointed in the least by it. Shawn is really good at making her characters perfectly flawed. Here's what I mean by that... They are always interesting, smart, handsome and sexy as hell, but they are also NOT perfect people. They make mistakes,(sometimes more than once) they learn from them and eventually they take chances to find the happiness that they are seeking. There is something about the way her characters are written that makes me care about them and root for their happy ending because they deserve it.
Preston Reynolds is a very complex character. He is a successful lawyer whose ex-wife and two children have moved out of state leaving him a lonely and almost a workaholic. He has fought sexual attraction and emotional feelings for his best friend and law firm partner's younger brother Scott Trask. 10 years ago Scott left for New York to get his GPA in accounting and Preston could never get him out of his mind even though they were just friends and NEVER had any physical contact with one another.
Preston is very afraid of his feelings and attraction to Scott. He makes excuses for them, and tries to convince himself that he is not gay but just attracted to Scott in particular. When Scott is asked to work at the Law firm as a private investigator and accountant, Preston is more than worried that his desire for the younger man is written all over his face. Sure enough, when he sees Scott again he is overwhelmed with his attraction and emotion for him.
Scott has been in love with Preston for years. Knowing his feelings will never be returned by the heterosexual Preston, he just sets out to be his friend, and to try to loosen the very serious Preston up. No one is more surprised that Scott when one night after work Preston comes into his office and kisses him and makes love to him. But, Preston never wants to talk about feelings or the future. As their relationship grows, Scott starts thinking that Preston is ashamed of their relationship and is torn between his love for Preston and hiding their relationship from the world, or being true to himself.
I loved this book. I felt for both Preston and Scott. The thing is, I could understand both characters point of view. Preston's fear of rejection from family and friends because of his relationship with Scott...and Scott's insistance of not being hidden away like some dirty secret.
There were times though I wanted to shake Preston though. Scott was such a great guy...who wouldn't want to take a chance with him. I loved Scott's quirkiness and his sensitivity makes him one of my favorite heroes. Both he and Preston deserved some happiness...especially with one another. -
I loved this book! I thought that Scott and Preston were perfect together. I am glad that Preston finally gave into his feelings for Scott. For a while there, I wasn't sure if he deserved Scott's devotion, but he redeemed himself in the end.

Loved this book! Review coming soon....
I finally got around to writing a review and realized there were aleady a few great reviews out there. So I'll just say that I loved this book!! Loved Scotty, loved Preston, loved Scotty. ...LOL -
This book had a very emotional storyline to it. I was glad to see them work through it, do some healing and make a good life for themselves.

Shawn Lane is one of the best authors that writes in this genre. Her characters are always well developed and her storylines are very tight. Scott and Preston's story is one of my favorites that she has written yet. I am looking forward to reading their sequel!

3.5 stars
Sigh. I wanted to like this so much, it sounded really good and everyone was giving it 5 stars... I guess I should have known. This story suffered from the same problem that made me not like Car Wash - everything happened too fast, there was no build up, no slow burn, and the sex scenes were uninspired.
The story itself was good. The premise is rather ubiquitous in m/m romance: "straight" guy falls for his best friend's little brother, who has always had a secret crush on him. For some reason, I never get tired of this. It's one of my favorite themes. The way Preston struggled with his feelings was believable, and Scotty handled the whole thing the way he should have. The only real problem storywise was that it happened too fast. Preston gave into his feelings way too easily at the beginning. I would have preferred if this had been drawn out a bit more. It would have made their first time a lot steamier.
Characters were okay. Scotty was a good character; she did a good job of introducing him and making him interesting, but then didn't really take it anywhere. He started to fade into "generic" territory as the story wore on. Jack, Scotty's brother, was really likeable when he was standing up for Scotty. Too bad he wasn't really present anywhere else in the story. Secondary characters are really important to the overall quality of a story in my opinion, and she didn't do nearly enough with Jack. And Preston was okay. A little underdeveloped as well, but most of the time spent with that character had to be about his conflict over being gay, so I was okay with it in that instance.
Bottom line: good story, decent though slightly underdeveloped characters. It just needed to take a little more time to grow in the beginning and some more time to delve into the characters later on. The story basically suffered from its short length. It was somewhere around 90+ pages with HUGE font. It's difficult to write a really satisfying story when restricted in length that much, which is something that frustrates me frequently in this genre. -
Preston and Scotty (I'm sorry there is just something wrong with a 25 yr old man named Scotty)were one of the most annoying couples I've read in awhile. Normally, I like one or the other or both but, few times am I ever wishing they'd both take a long walk off a short cliff.
Scott was an over emotional weenie and Preston was an unemotional douchebag who repeatedly had sex with a man, all the while telling himself that it was "abnormal", even looking at therapy for himself. Really dude?!
Not an enjoyable read. It just didn't play out naturally. Everything was at one end of the extreme or the other. If this is indicative of this authors other books, I'll take a pass. -
Scott Trask is home and is in the employ of the family business, which puts him not only in contact with the man he has dreamt about for more years than he can remember, but also literally next door to the man himself – which may be more than he can handle.
Deciding to give the attraction room to lead them where it will, both men enjoy each others company to almost the exclusion of all else. The only fly in the ointment for Scott is Preston’s suggestion to keep their relationship a secret. However, things don’t go as planned and before long – secrets have a way of not being secrets anymore and some hard choice have to be made, but who will come out the winner in this?
Scott Preston has more or less just settled into a routine with his life. While not what he wants, he gets by with his work and makes the best of whatever life throws at him. He gets a curve ball however when an insane attraction raises its head between Scott, his best friend’s brother, and himself. Not knowing what to do, he does the unthinkable and ends up causing more harm than even he had imagined he was capable of.
While the plot is not the most original, Shawn Lane has brought a dynamic level of emotional tension between the protagonists. The ebb and flow of the relationship that they are trying to maintain is one we can all relate to, and more than anything else, we all want it to succeed. AT LONG LAST is a truly brilliant read.

This was a pleasant coming out / gay-for-you story in which Preston, who thought he was straight (was married and had kids), finds himself attracted to Scott (his friend's younger brother) and finally acts on it. As far as the main characters go, I loved Scott - I admired his courage in coming out as a gay man and not wanting to compromise his identity, even for the man he came to love. As for Preston, he was harder to like - I understand the struggle he went through believing himself straight for so long and yet attracted to another man, but he seemed insensitive and really hurt Scott's feelings. Preston definitely didn't seem to struggle getting into the sex, however, which I found to be somewhat unrealistic. The conclusion of the book left me wondering if these two would successively make it in an ongoing relationship. All in, I enjoyed it despite a few things that made me go, hmmm.

I'm usually a bit wary about the gay-for-you stories, but I liked this one! Preston's struggle and Scotty's eventual frustration were shown really believable.
I don't at all think Preston looked unsympathetic. His whole life he had thought he was straight, he just couldn't change himself in a few weeks. Sure he hurt Scotty's feelings sometimes, but he sincerely apologized every time and he'd really felt remorseful.
I loved how it all worked out in the end and I can't wait to read the second story.
What I didn't like however was that Scott's brother told their dad about Scott and Preston and forcefully outed Preston to him (if I understood correctly from their phone conversation). I think it was way out of line and totally not his place to say this. Sure he could make up some half-truth to explain that Scott quit work not because he's afraid of work or for some other unworthy reasons, but to out his friend even to help his brother was not a good thing to do :( -
Not impressed. I did not like any of the MCs. Scotty - horrible name for a grown man btw - was just kind of meh and then became incredibly whiny. Preston was a real dick. Seriously did not like that guy! And this is coming from someone who loves loves loves angsty holy-crap-i-am-turned-on-by-another-man-this-cannot-be-happening storylines. But this one did not work for me at all! Also, the sex was uninspired and boring, which is just sad!
-
Not a big fan of this one. I did finish it with my fingers crossed, hoping that it would end on a great note. Sadly, I found there was little development into the relationship, the characters were 2 dimensional, and the plot was so-so.
-
Flat and very one demensional. I have come to the conclusion that I just really don't enjoy this author. So much better stuff out there.
-
The author has presented a number of complex characters, several of which are linked through events from the past.

I would say this was a pleasant read. Not exactly perfect but i enjoyed the story. I know Shawn Lane's fans are going to hate me for this. I'm new to this author's style of writing. "At Long Last" is my first read by Shawn Lane.
What I was disappointed about was how Shawn gave very little thought to the development of the setting of the story. What I mean is Scott and Preston are working in a law firm but Shawn gave very brief details about their work and how their work forces them to work together. For instance, Scott is the firm's investigator and is suppose to help Preston prove his client's innocence. However, I don't see this "working together part" except when Scott tells Preston that his client is not innocent. Plus, she didn't elaborate when Scott even had the time to go on his field investigation... I just get the impression that he spends most of his time" crunching numbers." Since Shawn mentioned that Scott does field investigation, shouldn't she at least give some insight into Scott's and Preston's work. I think people are going to hate me for saying this, but I feel that her storyline has not much depth.
Moving on to the sex scenes... Okaaaayyy... I admit I was enjoying the sex in the office... omg... it was yummy... Hahaha... Totally gave me a boner.... Then after that, all the sex scenes just became... uhh huh... "mild" ... I don't know if its just me. I find that when authors use the same phrase over and over again in their sex scenes, it becomes less imaginative and more predictable. So, the subsequent sex scenes are just alright.
And lastly is the plot. Okay. I'm not a guy and not gay either. But, I've read and watched numerous of gay stories/films - romance, coming-out, mpreg etc. Most of the time, gay romance stories are written by females, who want to see two hot guys overcoming insurmountable hurdles to finally be together. So this story for me is kinda predictable. Every sappy love story has a good ending. I kinda like reading stories like this, it makes me feel good and happy. But, I just couldn't feel sympathetic for Scott/ Preston. I just don't. You know you when you read a book and get so engrossed in it, you sort of feel for the characters. But, the emotions just didn't reach me. Especially the ending. Like, why would Scott's older brother send Preston, who broke his brother's heart to his motel room. I'm like $%#^&^%**. The ending was just too abrupt... Like it was too fast how Preston told his ex-wife and kids that he was gay. I'm like .... uh huh.... Plus, Scott's dad is so... unreasonable... he just flared up just after he praised Scott. He was totally nice to Scott in the beginning of the story, then towards the end, Shawn writes how Scott's dad is an asshole... I'm like how can the personality of a character be drastically changed... -_-
So, overall, it was a good read. But, I wouldn't be reading another one of her books any time soon. -

Rating: 7/10
PROS:
- Love the idea of two guys pining for each other (even though it takes a while for one of them to figure out that’s what’s going on) finally getting together, especially since it’s been 6 years since they’ve seen each other.
- Scotty’s dad seems a little too wooden and judgmental to be quite realistic, but I really like Scotty’s brother, Jack. He’s protective and perceptive and really open to / accepting of his brother’s sexuality.
CONS:
- Little hard to believe because of the inexplicable way Preston finds Scotty sexy but has never thought that way about another man. And especially hard to believe is the way Preston throws himself into a relationship with Scotty instead of running scared immediately after their first encounter. It’s a nice fantasy, though, I must admit.
- The ending is a little rushed, but it’s in proportion to the length of the story.
- In all three stories, one character or another uses the term “lover” after a single round of sex. That word has a serious/emotional connotation for me that I think rarely fits someone with whom you’ve had sex one time. -
Men in suits were smexing on the table and all was right with my little gay romance world. Preston Reynolds was working in the law firm when new man came in, they knew each other from earlier, but Preston wanted to be more then friend later *wink wink* However it was not that easy. Scott Trask was positively gay and held back from Preston, he had some rules about not doing married men. Preston ended his heterosexual period with nice divorce and was again on the market of the mutual attraction whit anyone who would dare. Scott dared and both men succumb after some no, no to yes yes and sex was ensured. Some serious issues about coming outs did not spoil the fun.

I read this book since it was listed in the Gay-for-you section and I love that type of story. But I must say that while I suppose it fit the GFY category, this story was a disappointment. I really HATED Preston! Yes, in this genre the straight guy being confused and unwilling to accept that he is gay is typical, but Preston has NO redeeming qualities and I dont even know why Scott loved him. Kind of wish I could take back reading the book. I am sorry (Shawn Lane), I am a fan of your (Shawn Lane) other books though.

what can I say? I like this book. the story was good enough.
Prescott was married. he had 2 kids and ex wife. he was 'straight' that was he thought. but he's attracted to his best friend younger brother, Scott. I know it's hard to accept the fact. it's hard for Pres to accept that he was love Scott. they did mind blowing sex, but Pres don't want to admitted what happens to them. of course thats hurting Scott so much...
I'm not truly good in writing, but I can say you can try to read this book *wink* -
3.5 stars--A cute, short, fun albeit barely believable straight to gay read. The same story, spread over months, would have been fine, but instant gay lust by supposedly straight guy was a bit much to swallow. Preston's denial felt real, but again, the speed with which he got over it was a little unrealistic. If you can get over that, however, it is a very enjoyable read. I really liked Scotty, and his brother was a pleasant surprise, too!
-
This was actually quite an emotional read at times. I felt bad for for Scotty at times, especially
-
I guess I have read too many M/M romances to be impressed by this one. Still a good book. Could have been much better. Oh And... I don't think if I had had such a huge disagreement with somebody that I was thinking of moving places, sex would be the first thing on my mind when I saw them next. Thankfully all such scenes were short.
-
I loved this book! I think I have a crush on Scott! Not that it would do me any good because he and Preston are desperately in love with one another, but a girl can dream!
I can't wait to read the sequel! -
Preston and Scotty met when Scotty was 19 Preston older by years was married with children . Now working together with Scotty's brother jack and their dad.
Preston can't hide his feeling and one kiss lead to more. And now what comes after that is up to Preston . -
I like the angst in Shawn Lane's older stories and I really enjoyed Scott and Preston's chemistry in this one. I look forward to the sequel.
-
Meh, didn't really do it for me, but if you like the whole GFY thing then you'll probably like this one. For me, it just felt forced, too fast, and not really believable.
-
I enjoyed the story and I liked Scott but Preston was such an ass and only redeemed himself at the very end.
