Hidden secrets lead to deadly lies...

Following the incident that brought justice to her parents’ killers but ended her career, former FBI Special Agent Rebecca West needs a fresh start. Hoping to find peace, she decides to spend a few months in the sleepy beach town of Shadow Island, where she spent idyllic summers as a kid.

However, her vacation is cut short when a seventeen-year-old goes missing with no leads or clues. When the girl’s body is found in a nearby marsh with strangulation marks around her neck, Rebecca can’t say no when the overworked sheriff asks her to help investigate.

Rebecca’s gut tells her that on the small island, the murder hadn’t been a chance encounter. But who would want the likeable teen in a seemingly sweet and innocent relationship with her boyfriend dead? And why?

Rebecca soon discovers something bigger is going on around Shadow Island, something involving an enigmatic Yacht Club that no one will talk about...but that just might hold the keys to solving the girl’s murder. But who are they willing to kill to keep their secrets buried?

From its enigmatic beginning to the twisted ending you won’t see coming, Shadow’s Secret—the first book in the Shadow Island Series by Mary Stone and Lori Rhodes—is a stark reminder that two people can keep a secret...if one of them dies.

Shadow's Secret (Shadow Island #1) Reviews

    Whew! Wild

I'm a huge fan of Mary Stone. I could seriously binge all her books in one month or two. Well rounded characters, action and drama, a serial killer or just one killer doesn't matter. A woman who's a beast and independent and likeable. Love it.

The book was about Rebecca who's a former FBI agent who goes back to a small town in VA where her and her family used to vacation when she was just a girl. After leaving the FBi, she comes to this quiant small town to get away but instead a Sheriff comes knocking for assistance on a missing persons case. He's a sheriff of four total deputies and two dispatchers and could use Rebecca's help. What goes from a missing girl to a murder has Rebecca reeling and somewhat determined to find this killer.

Action packed and a real good mystery had me from the get go. Great characters and a strong female lead. I finished this in less than twenty four hours

Shadow's Secret (Shadow Island FBI Mystery Series Book 1) by Mary Stone such a wonderful read. This is book number one in this wonderful start to a brand new series that I am so hooked on and can not wait to read the rest. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading a wonderful thriller.

I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book & am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.

What a fabulous start to a new series. This mystery had so many twists and turns it was a wild ride the whole time. I loved it and can’t wait to see what’s next

  • Gracie Bustillos

A great new series from Mary Stone & her co-author Lori Rhodes. New and exciting plot, great ending, with an even better teaser to keep you waiting for the next book.

  • Courtney Meyer

Really not sure why this book is rated so high? I’ve really been wanting a good, exciting long mystery series and this is the second one I’ve started…and will likely not continue. I was so hopeful, as the premise sounded promising, but this was both boring and cliché all at once. And for a 200 page book, you’d think it would be difficult to bore a reader! This book also ends in a cliffhanger, but even that was underwhelming. There’s got to be better out there!

First book in a long series for Shadow Island, however it didn’t feel like it should be the first. Felt like there was missing more background, it didn’t make you connect much at all to the FMC, felt like these was just something missing over all and wasn’t crazy with how it ended.

  • Yoly

Fast-paced, good mystery, some twists that'll lead you to an unexpected ending!

  • Amanda

Enjoyed the twist and turns of the storyline, kept me guessing until the end. Eager to get the next one in the series.

Expecting a relaxing vacation, Rebecca gets pulled back in to working a case….

Former FBI agent Rebecca West goes to Shadow Island, a childhood vacation destination, for some R&R. Her time off is short-lived as the local sheriff asks her for help in the case of a missing teenage girl. Rebecca says yes and ends up in the middle of a murder investigation when the girl's body is found in the marsh. Suspicion first falls on the boyfriend and later on a sinister gentleman's club known as the yacht club. The sheriff doesn't believe the yacht club is involved but Rebecca believes he is being naive. The relationship between Rebecca and the sheriff grows and develops into one of mutual respect. Other members of the sheriff's department are less receptive to Rebecca's presence. The characters and their relationships are interesting but more grit and depth is needed in this story. Suspense builds and the ending comes rather abruptly.

This new series by Mary Stone and Lori Rhodes is amazing! I am so excited to know there will be more to Rebecca West's story and can barely wait to find out what that will be. Will she keep the job, will the others accept her, will she just continue her vacation instead???
    Excellent Book ladies! Well done.

small disappointment that book 1 isn’t quite the beginning

Mary Stone does this “book 1” with the origin backstory offered at the end of “book 1”, although the reason for this habit escapes me.

Author Mary Stone has made another good choice in a co-author with Lori Rhodes. These two have created a new new series and character that proving to be another winner.

SHADOW'S SECRET is the first installment in the Shadow Island Series. Not as intense and spine chilling as the Winter Black and Ellie Kline series, but just as good in capturing your attention in the first few pages and keeping you engrossed to the end with with intrigue and suspense.

FBI Special Agent Rebecca West is trying to get her life back in order after her career ended before she was ready.  She has returned to Shadow Island, the place her family had spent many happy summers during her youth. All she wants is a quiet summer of quiet. Unfortunately, she hasn't even unpacked her few personal items before there is a knock on her door. The Shadow Island Sheriff Alden Wallace has come to ask for her help locating a missing teenager. The investigation will lead to a boyfriend or two and a mysterious Yacht Club that no one wants to talk about. I was hooked from the beginning and had a hard time setting the book down for even a few minutes.

If you haven't read any of Mary Stone's books and enjoy thrillers, start now. The Winter Black series and Ellie Kline series are the darkest with the other series a little less dark, but still chilling, in my opinion. I do recommend this newest series and all those before. I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest review.

    BOOK REPORT
Shadow's Secret is a good, solid start to a series; I look forward to returning to Shadow Island and spending more time with Rebecca West, especially learning about her past.

That said, there were what seemed to me to be an awful lot of grammatical errors in this book that could've and should've been caught just by running a basic review program on the manuscript, and certainly should've and could've been caught by even a middlin' proofreader.

But, hey, you get what you pay for, and this book by Mary Stone was "free" from Amazon, so there you go.

    PS
Came back to this BOOK REPORT to note for the record that after finishing Shadow's Secret, I took advantage of the offer at the end of the book to download the free bonus story Shadow's Edge, which is the prequel to the first book in the series. I'm writing about it here because it doesn't show up anywhere on Goodreads, which I find to be quite odd.

Anywhoodles, this story wasn't as good as the book. To the point, sadly, where it made me rethink whether I wanted to continue with the series. To me it the whole "leaving the FBI under stigma" trope just wasn't believable. I dunno, maybe if you're interested in this series, skip this? I know I wish I had.

    Rebecca West’s Lost Vacation

Mary Stone and Lori Rhodes have a new winning series on their hands. Shadow’s Secret ( Shadow Island FBI Mystery Series Book 1) has all the excitement and drama a person could want. I finished reading the book at 1:00 am.

Rebecca West needed a break after getting the people responsible for her parents murder. She got her justice; however, it cost her career as an FBI agent. Rebecca decides to take a vacation on Shadow Island, a place her parents took her as a child. Just as she is getting settled in the Sheriff, Alden Wallace, asks for her help in finding a missing teen, Cassie, who later turns up dead.

Rebecca will investigate the rumored Yacht Club which is supposed to be a group of wealthy older men who like young girls. Sheriff Wallace appears to be hesitant about investigating the Yacht Club. Someone gets killed during this investigation.

Who killed Cassie? Is her boyfriend guilty? Did someone from the Yacht Club kill her? Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Great start to a new series! This one features Rebecca West, ex-FBI, on a return trip to the place she spent her summer as a child, Shadow Island. She arrives for a must needed three month vacation when the town sheriff shows up at her door. He is looking for help with a recent murder of a 17 year old girl ;and Rebecca agrees to help. Add in a "clandestine yacht club" with rumors of untorrid goings on, several young girls associated with the yacht group and a town where the police don't want their summer tourist destination's reputation sullied and you have a case for the books! Well written and keeps your interest. This is a series that shows a lot of promise! I received this novel as an ARC. All thoughts and comments are my own. 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Rebecca West is a 34-year-old former FBI agent. She goes back to the place where she and her parents went in the summers during her childhood -- Shadow Island, where there was happy times and relaxation, where she can 'lick her wounds' and decide what she wants to do with the rest of her life. Then a knock on the door changes everything. Sheriff Alden Walker is wanting her help in a missing person case that turns into something much bigger. The story pulls the reader into it until there is no what to stop reading. Answers MUST be given! But are they the ones wanted? I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. Looking forward to the next installment.

Overall a good start to a new series. I had to backtrack several times as I didn’t see how something happened. The characters are engaging and the case is all that is dirty and bad about secrets and wrong doings. There is foreshadowing and a good description of the island. I do recommend reading the bonus book first to understand Deputy Wests background. The ending was open so I am interested to see how and what starts the next book.

    Rebecca West

Shadows Secret is a very good read! Rebecca former FBI steps in to help small town law enforcement solve a murder that never should have happened. It had me guessing all sorts of suspects and once the actual murderer was revealed I couldn't believe it! I was saddened by the death of the one Law enforcement officer . I can't wait for the next book to see what happens next. Does West stay on at the station? Does the team blame her for the death?
